Like I'd respect you if you didn't INDULGE yourself.

First slap merely raises the question of whether or not you DESERVE respect.

SECOND slap ascertains that you deserve it for that moment.

The look in your eyes as you give it?

THAT decides whether you deserve anything else AFTER the moment has passed...

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: What celebrity death would rock your world? (6/30/2009 3:29:29 AM)

no one's death

i won't grieve or cry buckets of tears over a celeb's sudden demise. i wasn't their bff or someone of an acquaintance - so why should i shed a tear if they die?

HatesParisHilton -> RE: What celebrity death would rock your world? (6/30/2009 4:35:53 AM)

because if you don't the scumbag parasitic no talent execs making the bulk of the money off the celeb would not make more money..?

The ones that surprisingly DID rock my world when they died include Paul Newman, Jim Hensen and Mr. Rogers (I actually did cry when I heard about Fred Rogers. I guess he was the loving father figure I didn't have in real life).

I took a bus into the city when I was 17 to stand outside the Dakota when Lennon was shot, so that counts, too.

Now, the only ones that I think I would personally mourn are Joni Mitchell, Tony Bennett and Morgan Freeman.
(and one more little known name from my childhood- Tom Lehrer)

mdr080480 -> RE: What celebrity death would rock your world? (6/30/2009 7:10:06 AM)

None.

I'd most likely be saddened, but I am not emotionally connected to any celebrity, so none would rock me or my world.

Ace Frehley.

This is Darcy

Hell, yeah! We had the pleasure of seeing Ace live last year and he's still got it. I actually enjoyed the solo show even more than the three KISS shows I saw back in '96.

As for who would rock my world if they shuffled off this mortal coil, I'd have to include Trent Reznor, Gary Numan, Harlan Ellison, Stan Lee, John Carpenter and George A Romero. All have brought me countless hours of pleasure and have created work that has become integral in my life.

I'd suggest that those who don't 'get' the connection to people who you've never met but who have touched your life are perhaps a little barren in the empathy department. Having your world rocked at the news of someone's demise doesn't mean you have to make a pilgramge to their place of death, or scatter the contents of the neighbourhood's florists all over your porch, or even buy armfuls of their CDs or have their face tattooed on your butt. You can merely feel a little sad, raise a glass of wine or beer to them and mourn the loss of a creative force (as I did when John Peel died a few years ago).

That's fine if that's how it is for you, but I can't help but feel a little sad that you've never been moved so completely by another's work as to feel an emptiness knowing that their creative flame has been extinguished.

Whoa...the question was: what celebrity death would ROCK YOUR WORLD.
Some of us truthfully answered that none would do so. I was one. In no way did i say i would not feel sad, raise a glass, or feel the world was a bit darker for the loss (George Carlin comes to mind).

I have had my world rocked by death...and it is a debilitating thing to experience. In no way would a stranger have that effect on me.

What Holly said.

There are a ton of famous people I had a "oh damn that sucks!" moment. But not even close to rocking my world. Barely rocked a few minutes of it.

......a celebrity death that actually did cause me to be depressed for a few days was Ian Drury. He was my idol....for his courage, raw talent and astonishing sense of humour. Also i never got to see him live, which was a promise i had made myself.

Ian Dury was a 'wow' moment for me.  Freddie Mercury too - but more because of the reaction of people around me than because of being a fan - he really wasn't on my list of idols.  I think it surprises you (generic) when something like that happens though because you can't determine 'grief' or shock - as it does funny things to you and your body.

Sometimes, they aren't a stranger though.  In my case, when my best friend commited suicide, I requested permission to use some unpublished lyrics - it was a personal moment between my friend and I.  That celebrity responded to me, not only with permission but with wonderful, heart felt correspondance.  Still a stranger.  But all the same, when he passes, if he passes before me - I'll certainly be effected.
