ORIGINAL: mefisto69 I've spent more than 2 decades studying the social, cultural and political histories of Latin American culture groups. The Mayan civilization has taken up quite a bit of my study time. Primarily an agricultural society, they developed highly organized social groupings, structured religion, built pyramids/cities laid out in mathematical reference to the stars, developed advanced math and astronomy skills. The catholic church did an amazing job of destroying Most of their written records < yes 'written'. However, they developed 3 different calendar systems that they used simultaneously. They date their civilization from 3114 B.C. and their calculations are ACCURATE TO THE DAY. They believed in cycles of the destruction of mankind by natural disasters. Their last major cycle coincides with Noah's flood. Reference fragments have been translated that indicate civilizations ( in the Americas ) dating back to 10,500 B.C. Their 'Long Count" calendar ends on 12/22/2012 with another unnamed natural disaster of worldwide proportions. I am interested in reading your material - have you written peer review or books? Mayans like Egyptians were technologically advanced people. They understood how to make it work but did not understand why/how. This is true of many ancient cultures. The time they thrived is about the time humans as a whole started grasping this. I am impressed with their grasp on many subjects but of course one culture or another had to be the first and lead the way. Any people that base their math on the number of fingers and toes humans have(vigesimal system) really loose points with me. There is not really any evidence to suggest they used this system in trade or for every day use. They used it to worship gods they invented to explain a universe they often did not comprehend. As early as 500 - 900 years ago they were still brutally murdering innocent people to please their gods - loosing more points with me. Sylvanus Morely, the fellow responsible for much of what we know today, suggested they were raised from barbarism. They were amazing people to be acknowledged and respected. However, all this bullshit about any type of connection with the divine or being able to see into the future is stupid. It has been demonstrated that unlike their prediction we will be near no black hole. I will stop I bet I am too verbose and unarticulate already - it just pisses me off. Planet X/Nibiru does not exist - sorry..... Mayan prophecy like all "Bleak times, Drought, famine, foreing occupation, change." are vague and meaningless. We apply them to events after they happen You said: "They believed in cycles of the destruction of mankind by natural disasters. Their last major cycle coincides with Noah's flood." Like many things they were 100% wrong. Noah's flood has been demonstrated to be bullshit by modern scholarship. This is even accepted as a fact by the majority of theist scholars. "Native global flood stories are documented as history or legend in almost every region on earth. Old world missionaries reported their amazement at finding remote tribes already possessing legends with tremendous similarities to the Bible's accounts of the worldwide flood. H.S. Bellamy in Moons, Myths and Men estimates that altogether there are over 500 Flood legends worldwide. Ancient civilizations such as (China, Babylonia, Wales, Russia, India, America, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Sumatra, Peru, and Polynesia) all have their own versions of a giant flood." Although there is some disagreement exactly which myth Christians stole the story of Noah from most believe it was: Epic of Gilgamesh "The Epic of Gilgamesh is, perhaps, the oldest written story on Earth. It comes to us from Ancient Sumeria, and was originally written on 12 clay tablets in cunieform script. It is about the adventures of the historical King of Uruk (somewhere between 2750 and 2500 BCE)." http://www.ancienttexts.org/library/mesopotamian/gilgamesh/ http://www.eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPortal/custom/portlets/recordDetails/detailmini.jsp?_nfpb=true&_&ERICExtSearch_SearchValue_0=EJ140573&ERICExtSearch_SearchType_0=no&accno=EJ140573
