I hope to get a tatoo put on my left hip of chinese symbol for slave with his initials under it.

I do not need these to know i am his, i just like others to see and know it.

mine was placed on my lower back. a crouched panther, encircled by a band that doesnt connect, and three dots that link the circle together. above the panther, the kanji for slave... beneath the panther... a slave number. yeah, the last part a bit silly perhaps... but the whole mark is designed with reminders and memories.

It's an external sign, sure... just like a wedding ring, or a Christian who wears a cross around his neck or has a cross tattooed over his heart, etc. Sure, they are external signs that are worthless if they don't stand for a sincere internal disposition, but usually it is assumed that such external signs are only adopted by those that do have a sincere internal disposition.

Also, marking your partner's body is not just a sign of imprinting yourself on their heart... one can imprint oneself on another's heart without making a permanent life-long commitment to them. The mark the OP is looking for suggestions here is a permanent mark, an external sign of how he is making a permanent, life-long commitment to his beloved slave, similar to what some married people do with wedding rings, a Christian might do by tattooing a cross across his heart, etc.

I kinda gave a half assed explanation, but did mention it was done with a cauterizing pen and she said 'Didn't that HURT'?

Truth is, for me at least, a cauterizing pen isn't excruciating painful. You do get the smell of burning flesh, but it's more of an itchy feeling than a burning one. JMO. YMMV.

I'm not saying a permanent (or even semi-permanent) mark is necessary to make me feel like property. It was / is my dominant's wish to mark me and he generally gets the final word.

Status: offline 		i will only get his mark when my submission is full it isa tatoo of his initals in a design i havent seen it nor asked to and i havent asked where it goes as this is his choice but trust him totally and he knows my wishes needs totally. my master will allow me to wear it when i am ready

Status: offline 		I have a fairly large "Kef" design that I have tattooed high a girl's left thigh. It is a Gorean idea, so it wouldn't work for everyone obviously.

With becca, she expressed an interest in something more like a real brand, so after some research, I picked up a cautery pen and gave that a shot. Since she already had the kef, I used a stylized version of my initials that time and did it back on her hip. Unfortunately, since she is a red-head, even though I did it twice, and the second time was really pretty deep (as deep as I felt comfortable with) the scarring goes away completely after a year or so. I have thought about doing it yearly as an "anniversary" type thing, but it produces a pretty serious wound and I still worry a little about infection and such.

Your right. Strike branding should not hurt much if you do it right (feels more like a deep itch) but what ever you do, don't give it a quick tap with that hot sliver of metal or it will hurt like buggery and you will only achieve a few nasty blisters. A brand needs to go onto the skin for 1-2-3 seconds and needs to be pressed firmly enough that it will pierce through the skin. Someone else said a popping noise and thats exactly what you want to be hearing.
Your right about the thin metal too. The healing brand will broaden between 3 to 4 times its irons width, so if you use a traditional branding iron your just going to end up (when it heals) with a big ugly blob.
If I was doing a small letter M then I would be using 4 different brands with 4 different strikes.

Status: offline 		Recently I saw a slave "brand" in the form of a "Kef" which had been cut into the flesh with a scalpel and electrically cauterised which also gave a raised or three dimensional form.  The slave's Master is a Medical Professional and is well used to both surgical cutting and electrically cauiterising. I found it exreemly attractive looking.

You could label them "Monday," "Tuesday," etc...

Status: offline 		Be sure when using characters in foreign languages to either do the translation yourself, check the translation, or only use a trusted friend. I have seen Chinese characters for slave, lover, or property that were actually idiot, bean curd, and gullible. Some tattoo artists think things like that are funny. Remember that Chinese, Japanese, and Sandscrit characters often have multiple meanings, be sure they all fit.

I have never felt the urge to mark a slave, but too be honest I prefer subs to slaves whom are less likely to want a permanent mark.

Status: offline 		I agree completely old chap. I've come across too many bad translations even in the so called "dead" languages. I can usually find someone trustworthy or an accredited scholar to vet documents for me. Were I looking to use foreign characters, I'd go for the Japanese characters for either Master or slave depending who was getting the tattoo done, or use Irish Gaelic or Latin and not use that Old English text in all caps either. I suppose if I were keen enough and was prepared to spend the time, I could design such a marking incorporating the Egyptian Hieroglyphs which could be rather an interesting piece of art work. Tattoo wise I have a couple of Lodge Brothers who do excellent work and who I can trust not to play childish games too.

Perhaps the biggest blunder of that type was by Bill Gates-of-hell. Vista in Sanskrit means shit. So, the OS was aptly named. [A soft "sh" sound made with the tongue tip rolled back to the real of the palate is transliterated as the letter "s" with a dot below].

SouthernSpankin... the whole wedding ring thing was discussed in the COLLARS thread. Please note that I said "poor substitute." I did not express vehement opposition to external symbols -- which reflect what already exists within. Too many people make the mistake of hoping that an external symbol will create the inner experience. Or, they put the cart before the horse.

As Musicmystery wisely suggests -- try it out with a Sharpie first. Otherwise, you may end up tatooing a big figurative "L" on your forehead.
