I just wanted to comment real quick on the pain (and smell) involved with the cautery pens... heh. When I used ours, we had pretty much the same results as mentioned in the other posts. Although the resulting "brand" was pretty impressive, at least until it healed, the pain wasn't nearly as much as you would expect. I suppose it had to do with the temperatures involved. However if you plan to experiment, the smell can indeed be rough for some people. Neither of us is squeamish, but the smell of burning flesh certainly isn't all that pleasant, and it was quite a bit stronger than I had expected it to be. Also, a lot of people now seem to be working with the "dot matrix" style designs lately, and I would think those are a lot less... hmm... "invasive?" than ours was so they might be a good place to start. Ours was actually a fairly large group of lines, that looked pretty severe and had some heavy scabbing when all was said and done. It was nice for a while, but I was really surprised that the scars disappeared as quickly as they did, but she is a redhead, so I guess it isn't uncommon.
