These little pissing matches only tend to occur when there is fresh meat within view; so take that for what its worth.

sorry, bear, have to disagree with you here, machismo bullshit often goes out the window by the time boot camp is survived. and by the time they're out of boot camp, they are taught to obey. to question orders is to chance getting yourself, or worse, your comrades in arms killed.

whether there is machismo bullshit in the very much higher ranks.... that's up for debate, in my mind.

Not to derail this absolutely riviting thread, but it has gotten me thinking.  I find a rather consistent reaction among women in regards to men, consistent not that ALL women do it but it is certainly a VERY skewed bell curve which indicates something going on driving it.

Women TEND to like men who they feel they can protect them,  HOWEVER, when those men get set to fight another male, they TEND to want them to walk away.  Now this could be simple observer bias on my part as perhaps that is the women I am with but I wonder if the men who aren't backing down are alone verses a male who is accompanied by a mate.

Hypothesis:  In our evolutionary past, females select males on the basis of their physical prowess which is often related to their ability to provide.  Fighting with another male risks injury which would reduce her mates ability to provide.  So, while they pick males for their aggressive nature, they seek to harness and direct it so as to maximize long term potential for the males ability to provide.

I don't recall seeing that behavior among primates but that isn't my field of expertise.  Interesting thought however.

As to the males not interested secondary to their limitations? There are many who would look at this thread, the players behind it, and your post, and shake their heads, having witnessed a clear cut case of juvenilistic behavior at its finest.

i don't know that it's solely based on his ability to provide, michael. i think it's also based on the ability to protect one's mate.

machismo is great, but when you're supposed to be protecting a mate (in her mind at least), and you're being cocky and want to prove your a manly man still, and you risk being ripped limb from limb or at least rendered unable to provide protection, you lose brownie points! i don't want my spawn to be exposed to peril (hey, we're talking cavemen here) because my mate had to prove he had bigger balls.

one of the things i look for in a potential partner, btw, is the ability to make me feel protected. if i'm not getting that, we'd be great friends, but dammit, protection equals cherishing in my heart (has to do with my first principals) and that's major desire for me. that protection can be equally physical or mental. sometimes the best protection is the ability to talk or mentally intimidate the hell out of one's opponent.

Pull your head out of your ass long enough to realize that women are highly capable of taking care of themselves. I can and have for a long time.

I did not and will not chose a partner based on his ability to provide. I chose him based on his character and maturity among other things. He could teach you a few things, Michael.

Holly, i have to say out of most women i know, you are the exception not the rule. Most women still instinctively gravitate towards Men who are capable of protecting them or giving then security and leading them. Just because a woman is capable of providing for herself doesn't mean she doesn't gravitate towards Men who will be security to her and protection.

Sure you did and now think of what his character and maturity OFFER you? I am sure when you sought your husband you wanted a Man who would provide you and your children many things even IF you are capable of providing them.

I think you may be trying to hard with the woman's lib thing here and if you stop and think about what your expectations of your husband are -- it is a concept of his capability of providing, protecting etc. and i am sure your expectations of him is because he is a Man. Just because you are capable doesn't mean that he is INCAPABLE or you don't look for same.

I am happily driven towards Men who can provide for me -- hell call me lazy but who wants to do the job of a Man when a Man can do it.
