Just how far would this tax go?  Because I know how to make ALL SORTS of junk food at home.  (Isn't that what Christmas is for?)

And what about bakeries?  Donut shops?  Street vendors?  Wedding Cake makers?

What about desserts bought while dining?

Although. . . I think I could make a bundle on the black.  I know how to make marshmallow fluff!

OK--having been in the health care field in a number jobs, including patient care, I think there are a lot of things people are missing here.
First off, the average reading level in the US is about the 6th grade. Just the fact that you are reading this and using a computer puts you in the upper half. Feel better?
Seems like there are two main grievances: 1) People don't want the government in their food. (I guess they don't want tests done on food coming into the US, or domestic products including beef, chicken etc. OR testing done on drugs, cosmetics or medical procedures.) The point is, they are ALREADY making tons of decisions. 2) There are already too many taxes, it's all a "plot." Well, it's only a tax if you buy the shitty food. Like the cigarette tax does not effect me.
But I understand the difficulty of trying to eat healthy. I lived in Texas most of my life and thought I was doing a pretty good job. THEN I moved to California and was around a lot of people who actually KNEW what they were doing. I wasn't even close to healthy. So education is huge, but most people simply will not seek out that education unless they have a reason to. IF the price on shitty food goes up, that would get their attention, hopefully enough, to educate themselves on WHY that tax was placed.
Basically, people are lazy and kinda dumb when it comes to healthcare. They want a pill to be able to take care of anything.
Here is ONE example I personally had. I had a patient who had gone thru HOURS of one-on-one teaching and various seminars regarding diet, exercise etc. to help control her newly diagnosed diabetes. She came back 2 months later and could not figure out why her blood sugar levels were so high. She had taken her pills every day as prescribed. With more questioning, she said that she had not gotten her meds refilled. When asked why, she said she had finished the bottle and thought she had been "cured." This is the type of shit I'm talking about. I'm sorry, no other word then stupid applies here. Yo have to beat people over the head with a fucking hammer to get them out of their shitty habits. Sending out a flyer won't work. Education will help but it won't work alone. I mean if the threat of DYING early does not work, how are you suypposed to reach a person?
And all these stupid remarks about how living longer and being healthyis more expensive. Please--shut up. You're a moron. Take a walk thru a hospital and and take a look around--the obese dominate when it comes to percentage IN the hospital AND how much time has to be spent taking ccare of them.
Also read something about a liver transplant or something earlier in the post. There are a limted amount organs donated every year. Choices have to be made about which person is likely to respond best to receiving the organ AND complying with the STRICT regimen of meds and treatment post-transplant. That is how decisions are made. The transplant itself costs around 400k, if I remember correctly. That is not including rehab, meds and post treatment. And I mean meds every day for the rest of your life. Now, granted, if someone is stupid enough to drink or use drugs to the extent to liver failure, they aren't exactly the brightest. So, if you have one liver to donate and you have a guy who drank his liver away and you have someone who was born with some malformation of their liver but is otherwise healthy, who is the better candidate?
So the point is people are DUMB when it comes to healthcare. They would rather be rescued from the brink then try to live a healthy life all along.
And as far as costs of fruits and veggies. If shitty food is taxed, more people will but fruits and that will help drive price down. Kind of like organic stuff. At first it was really expensive but now that more people are buying it the price is coming down. Also, instead of all these bullshit farm subsidies going to farmers NOT to plant crops, maybe that can be redistributed or done away with altogether.
So, quityerfuknbitching, get off your ass, go outside and DO SOMETHING!
Also, fruits are fucking cheap. Looking at a flyer for grocery strore right now. BAnanas-33c/pound, watermelons-39c, apples-59c. I know it's not as easy as opening a can. Also, you should NEVER buy anything in a can. It means it's unhealthy-period. I just looked in my cabinet--I have some tuna and some frijoles. Only thing canned in my kitchen. Get in the fucking habit of eating healthy. PLEASE don't eat canned fruit...aackpth!!

whippedboy678...you say you are in the healthcare field. With your attitude i fear you can do some damage. The fact that your post contains many remarks about the stupidity of your fellow humans tells me you cannot help but convey that attitude to the patients you "care" for. Did it ever occur to you that they need help as opposed to criticism?

Many here are in the medical field, myself included. If you cannot be part of the solution, get out of the way.

If overweight and obese comprise 2/3 rd's of the population, I would not be surprised to see that they also comprise 2/3 rd's of the patients in a hospital.  Just like if a town is 10% black, then I would expect that hospital patients would be 10% black.  It is a demographic thing.

I haven't seen fruit those prices quoted by whippedboy, in a long while. I remember them... so it twasn't so long ago... but no way, no how, not even at walmart where it's all rather wilted and you know half the vitamines are gone.

Some people are ignorant to many things, but does that mean that we all suffer the extra taxes and control?  And as one in the medical field should know, there are many factors that can effect how and why some of those in the hospital are filling the beds.

Now they may tax sugar... people will go to the sugar substitutes and then we could have a run on neuro problems and a whole messed up body... maybe a bit thinner, filling those beds. Now some of my hospital experience will show.  Have you ever seen what they feed people in a hospital? My god, my son was filled with sugar... their protocol for brain damage which was four different speeds... three or four downers... something to slow his heart down because of all the speed and sugar and a dx of... we must strap him to a bed in a facility for the rest of his life because we have to give him all this stuff that makes him hallucinate because we have a schedual to keep.

Now... that makes total sense!  We non-medical people aren't the only stupid, bitching one's around!

My smart mama common sense said... get rid of all that doctor ordered and nurse allowed stuff... bring some common sense to the situation and looky here! What have we got? A young man not strapped to a bed... of course he has no schedual... but he isn't hallucinating, isn't hyped or and doesn't need to be drugged and is a happy camper... at least while I can take care of him. But because of all this taxation and such... my daughter who doesn't eat too much sugar... will not be able to care for him because she is working two jobs and considering another and her hubby just got laid off for the fourth time this year.

So yeah... I want my family going by medical and governmental dictates!  Don't even get me started on what they have done to me!
