Esinn -> Good Without God (7/31/2009 11:04:04 PM)

Associated Press
Published: July 29, 2009 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - An atheist group will be allowed to post ads that say “You can be good without God” on city buses in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Bloomington Public Transportation Corporation initially said the proposed ads violated its advertising policy, which bans statements for or against “controversial public issues.“
The Indiana Atheist Bus Campaign filed a federal lawsuit in May.
Under a settlement announced this week, the transit corporation agrees to post the ads for the usual rates and to reimburse the ACLU of Indiana for legal expenses.
I thought this is worth mention because of another recent thread that captured attention here with a similar subject.

Since the time of Washington, Paine & Franklin Christianity has been unable to answer intelligent critique of their religion - no surprise. They are forced to cower in the bubble of faith saying, "It is immoral and taboo for you to dare question my blind acceptance of god"  When that don't work the next step is to try to silence anyone who disagrees.
--Not to long before Washington they could kill and torture ya....

It makes my balls tingle when such bullshit is recognized as illegal.

Christianity has always been unable to answer intelligent critique of their religion - no surprise. They are forced to cower in the bubble of faith saying, "It is immoral and taboo for you to dare question my blind acceptance of god"  When that don't work the next step is to try to silence anyone who disagrees.

I have mixed emotions about this one. Generally speaking I support the atheist group's right to freedom of speech and expression but if the Bloomington Public Transportation Corporation can show that they did indeed have an active policy in place which prohibits accepting advertisements for or against "controversial public issues" and perhaps that they had rejected other advertisements for the same rationale in the past (or at least had never posted any) I would lean toward finding in their favor. I haven't researched how closely tied to the city of Bloomington the BPTC is so that's another variable... if in effect this would be an action of the city itself or is this transportation system a private entity that serves the city of Bloomington.

It was a settlement. Nothing was determined to be illegal and the BPTC was not legally forced to do this. So much for your testicular tingling.

olena -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 6:39:46 AM)

As a woman of deep faith I have always found it troubling that those who proclaim such faith have trouble, lash out or condemn out right those whose views are different. I always feel that trying to silence opposing thoughts and opinions is a strong sign of weakness and insecurity and low self esteem that one is trading their faith in for feeling superior toward others.

But of course this happens with practically everything in life. Look at how many on a site like this are trying to be superior toward all the others on here and “their way” is the right way.

thishereboi -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 7:46:30 AM)

fr
As long as they also allow ads like "Praise Allah" and "Jesus Saves" then it's all good.

Atheist bus ads are 'pathetic': Philosopher

Matters little what they post. they are coming across as bullies lately. and happily, the name "Jesus" is once again heard in Congress [:)]

DarkSteven -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 10:46:28 AM)

I don't like it.  I don't want any proselytizing on city buses.

Now that proselytizing for atheism is permitted, other recognized religions are next.

I don't like proselytizing, period.  If you want to talk to me about my faith, cool.  Whether or not you want to come to my camp, i could really care less.

That said, religion, or lack thereof, shouldn't be some huge taboo unless tax dollars are going to support its opinions be it directly or indirectly.  (Ie, the ad is privately funded but its placement is publicly funded.)  We have separation for a reason, and a very good one at that.

Brain -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 11:06:25 AM)

I am sick and tired of people being brainwashed by religion into being stupid. The whole idea that there is a man in the sky who knows everything you do every day is just plain stupid. There is no scientific evidence whatsoever that God exists and Albert Einstein thought believing in God was silly. You can even find a letter he wrote saying so on the Internet.

Way to insult every one who believes in something you don't lol. Personally I think you have to be a bit crazy to believe there's a god in heaven and you should obey him and stuff but I'd never go around publically posting any one w ho believes in religion is stupid or brain washed, or that it's stupid to believe what you believe, because I feel people have the right to believe what they want.  Just as I have the right to avoid them like the plauge if i want to because of their said beliefs.

this isnt the first time you have tossed out the Carlin link. would have thought you would find more material by now. regardless, i dont believe in a man in the sky theory. karma is my thing. and you are putting out so much negativity that, when it finally bites you in the ass, i dont want to be anywhere close.

I agree. I mean if the atheists get to everyone else should get to, too. Next up, Satanists!!

Brain -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 11:35:32 AM)

Sorry, but too much money and too many people are dying because of religion. Protestants fighting Catholics, Sunnis fighting Shia in Iraq and in the Middle East. Now we have suicide bombers blowing themselves up so they can become martyrs and fuck 50 virgins in the sky when they go to heaven? Billions of dollars wasted and it could have been used for health care and education and new energy technology like wind and solar.

It’s okay to tell people that garbage and for peoples lives to be ruined, people losing their arms and legs, that is okay but I’m insulting some people and that’s not okay. Well, you know what, I don’t give a shit anymore. Like Tom Cruise said in the movie to Jack Nicholson, “I want the truth !” And I’m not a Scientologist either.

If they don’t like what I said let them pray to their God to do something about it. George Bush and Cheney do not give a shit about all those poor young kids dead and traumatized in Iraq, sorry, but I’ve had quite enough religion in my life. George Carlin was right, religion IS bullshit.

FullCircle -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 11:35:34 AM)

When this campaign was run in London I saw it as a complete waste of money. It surprises me any organisation would attempt to discredit that which it holds to be ludicrous in the first place. A bit like me spending money to advertise the fact the teletubbies are actually people dressed up.

A bit like the Satanists that need other forms of religion just for themselves to exist as a religion.

Yeah because they are going to read the side of a bus travelling through Baghdad and realise: yes god doesn't exist so let’s all stop killing one another.
My idea of utopia is a world without religion but they’d still be people killing one another, they’d simply use another excuse. Sunni or Shia…same god different brand and territory. Catholics and Protestants same god different earth bound representatives.

Brain -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 11:43:09 AM)

There is lots of other material from comedians but George is my favorite. Doesn't it bother you that they lied to us and take our money and don't pay taxes. Remember they bought gold bathtubs and spend money on their whores, well don't care anymore I had enough of their garbage.

Next time if I feel compelled to post something about religion I will see if I can use someone else I like.

I didn't think most people looked at the links I post anyway.

dan997 -> RE: Good Without God (8/1/2009 11:46:30 AM)

I see the atheist ads as promoting critical thought much more than trying to convert anybody or pushing an agenda.

It is evident that something as powerful as Man could never have created the universe.  Therefore, something more powerful than Man did it.  The only question is, did this "something" have actual intelligence?

If you say yes, you're a Deist.  If you say no, you're an atheist.
