SpinnerofTales -> If God is Insane and/or Evil, Should We Still Worship Him? (8/9/2009 4:52:49 PM)

Ok....here's a question to chew upon.

According the the bible (we can stick with Jeudeo-Christianity), God is a bloodthirsty being who commands and/or commits genocide, is willing to kill scores of innocents and torture one who really loves him just to prove a point to another celestial creature, and who sentences most of the world's population to an eternal torture with no hope of redemption based on whether or not that person worships him in the manner he wishes to be worshiped. Given these facts (fact based on the holy books of the religions that support him), it can be argued that this God is either insane or evil.

My question is this: If it is true that this is a less than laudable being, is it still incumbent upon us to worship him because a) he created everything, b) he is the boss and/or c) because he will sentence us to eternal torture if we do not? In short, does a God (using the biblical definition of what God is) have to be good in order to be worshiped?

I'm interested in the opinions on this one.

Since my personal views about the bible are that it has very little at all to do with reality, I can comment without any emotional attachment.

If the bible is to be taken at face value (which I don't) it says that god created mankind in his image. Since mankind is, at times, insane, evil, and every other quality we know human beings possess, then it would seem god is also all of those things. Per the bible. However, most of christianity seems to be quite selective in their bible comprehension. Using the bits that are comfortable for them within their own lives and ignoring the bits they don't like.

That's a really good point. One I hadn't thought of before. And being God, and thus infinite and perfect, wouldn't he possess all those same qualities in an infinite and perfect manifestation?
Food for thought indeed....

I see your god as a petulant child:  "I AM GOD AND YOU ARE NOT."    I still believe that the AC/DC song "Who Made Who?" sums it up  You made him/her   in your image and your god has taken on some of your traits including insanity and evil mindedness.

(By "you" I mean mankind; past, present and future.)

I'd seriously bring your knowledge and understanding of the Bible into question.

If you do not want to worship God, that is your choice.    I cannot believe I just read that message.

I think you are the only other person I have heard from who saw the meaning in that song.

Most people I say that to look at me with a blank stare.

Things like Evil, Good, Insane, and Sane are human conditions.
God is not human. God does not love or hate... in my opinion... which apparently means squat.

GoddessImaginos -> RE: If God is Insane and/or Evil, Should We Still Worship Him? (8/9/2009 6:54:56 PM)

The ever-debated, limited-by-human-perception concept of God is one I have My own vested opinions on, and I usually keep My nose out of such debates unless they are laid squarely in My lap, but just so you know - not only is "God" not human, "God" is not a bearded white Male, either.
My two cents worth.

TheHeretic -> RE: If God is Insane and/or Evil, Should We Still Worship Him? (8/9/2009 6:57:18 PM)

Whew.  Lucky for us you restricted it to Judeo-Christian religions where we are allowed free will, instead of Islam where we are commanded to submit to God.  [:D]

It would be nice to understand why people who aren't Christians so often presume to tell those who are about the beliefs of Christians.

Or maybe yours.

People's perceptions are colored by their biases and belief systems.

I think someone told me something similar a few times, and I'm pretty sure you know who.

So you now accept the fact that your liberal belief system and liberal biases color your perceptions?

My beliefs and biases have nothing to do with how little the OP appears to know and understand the Bible.

lol... Okay, so maybe they do.  I believe he doesn't appear to understand.  I perceive his knowledge is somewhat lacking.  [;)]

Call me biased.

Because most of us were at one time.

Which begs the question of your screen name here, if you identify as a Christian.

Which you have not elaborated on.

I never denied that.

Just as your conservative belief system does.

But it is possible to try to stay objective, which doesn't preclude issues one feels strongly about.

According to the Judeo-Christian version of things, we, as people, are then punished for exercising our God given free will. That's kinda like purposeful set-up for failure and I kinda resent that. Then again, I don't interpret the bible as literal, so none of the above matters for anything but something to think about.

TheHeretic -> RE: If God is Insane and/or Evil, Should We Still Worship Him? (8/9/2009 7:30:22 PM)

I don't ID as a Christian, RML, though I do have a good foundation in conservative protestantism, the modern charismatic movement, and spent a few years incarcerated in Baptist school.  I grasp the concept of the personal relationship with Christ.  Some of it stuck, some is long gone, but my beliefs need a bigger framework than I find there.

You say that the folks who do this used to be Christians, but I don't see it that way.  I think some are still very stuck within that box of thinking.  Their view of religion and spirituality is still defined by the limited paradigm of their own negative experiences.  Their only conception of "God" is the Christian myth, and usually the most limited of Sunday School metaphor.

Then we have the bigots like Bill Maher who don't get it, don't try, but like to feel superior to others.  I really don't give a fuck what they think, but I'm happy to call them on their behavior.

As for my nic, RML, leave me alone in a room long enough with people of any belief system, and somebody will start piling up the firewood.   [:D]
