i've read a little about Food Inc. and am glad that i went vegan a few months back, even though the vegetable food industry is not much better than the livestock industry i can grow my own veggies for a few months out of the year.

Some that I have seen that I never expected to enjoy include:

Ace Ventura Pet Dectective...I was not then and am not now a Jim Carey fan...but I was pleasantly surprised by this movie.

The Day the Earth Stood Still...Normally, I hate remakes, but I was kind of surprised by this one.

Across the Universe...for a month I listened to my daughter talk about how much she wanted to watch this. Finally, I put it on to see what the big deal was...it was fantastic.

The Underworld series

Kingdom of Heaven...I put it on one night because there was nothing else on and I wanted some background noise...I ended up watching the whole thing. It was really good; and I generally detest religious movies.

The Family that Preys

Knowing...this one really surprised me...

Status: offline 		Grand Torino with Clint Eastwood was a surprise to me, they could have conveyed the time line better though, it was if a bitter old man was converted overnight, still, he did a great job of showing why he had so much bottled up bitterness.

but digging way back-

Paradise Alley with Sly Stallone- playing a wrestling manager in the 50s in NYC.  Actually pretty good.  Oh yeah- another Stallone movie that was pretty good-Cop Land

One of Jim Carreys early movie- Once Bitten- great soundtrack and a cute teen movie with a very sexy Lauren Hutton and Karen Kopins.

Just One of the Guys- portrayed as a T + A comedy in the trailers, but actually a sensitive look at the role of the sexes in school in the 80s.  It's a bit dated now, but not too bad- and its very well done.  Joyce Hyser is an underrated actress in my book.

Hexed-  Claudia Christian does comedy and its wonderful.  I thought it would be a lot more formulaic, but this is a very funny movie.

Get Shorty- a star studded vehicle like something out of the 60s- but it works- and a superb soundtrack.

The Italian Job- the remake.  The original is light hearted and fun, the remake is a much darker, more serious movie.  Why reuse the title?

The Last Seduction- one of my favorite film noir movies- didn't expect it to be so good the first time I saw it.  Great soundtrack as well.

Ever see Como agua para chocolate ("Like Water for Chocolate")?

"The story of a young girl named Tita who longs her entire life for her lover, Pedro, but can never have him because of her domineering mother's traditional belief that the youngest daughter must not marry but take care of her mother until the day she dies. Tita is only able to express her passions and feelings through her cooking, which causes the people who taste it to experience what she feels."

Sounds silly, I know, but it's a powerful and passionate film.

Sounds good! Was it released here in the US? It rings a bell a bit.

I don't see a whole lot of foreign films (RedBox doesn't carry the more esoteric stuff) but I did see The Science of Sleep. It really stunk, and I was surprised, because it was visually amazing and I wanted to love it.

grave of the fireflies - i was exspecting fluffy retarded creatures to pop out and be all 'japanesse' any second, insteed its a dark and solid film, possibly the best animated movie iv seen

watership down - i learned alot about how rabbits really think..

28 days later - was expecting a basic dull zombie movie, the film gets crazy good.

1984 - my fav book ever, the film is disgusting dont ever watch it, maybe just take logans run as the film version or something..

planet of the apes - i saw parts of the sequils and found them shit, the original i found fantastic who doesnt love Charlton Heston! also the remake was retarded

I'll look for it. I want to see the foreign version of Vanilla Sky, too. I know everybody loves to hate on Tom Cruise but I found Vanilla Sky to be incredibly good.

Status: offline 		It's been a while since I've taken the time to sit down and watch a movie (usually a winter thing for me)

Showboat...I had never seen it and given the time frame and type of acting that was popular at the time I was really impressed with Ava Gardner in it.

Juno...I didn't expect it to be as good as it was.

Vicky Christina Barcelona...I've never been a Woody Allen fan but I liked this.

Casino Royale...reminded me why I loved the Sean Connery Bond movies.

The Bourne Trilogy.... I have never been a fan of that type of movie but I loved these.

No Country for Old Men...Josh Brolin can act!

21 Grams....intense.

Capote.....fell in love with Philip Seymor Hoffman

There Will Be Blood....love Daniel Day Lewis

and hundreds more I cannot think of at the moment

Edited to add...........I soooooooo do not love Charlton Heston. The man could not act his way out of a wet paper bag.

What you need to know is that in Mexico, when people make hot chocolate- they bring the water to a rousing boil and pour it quickly over the chocolate.  The expression of "like water for chocolate" refers to when someone is really, really angry.  I saw the movie and liked it without knowing the expression's origin, but the friend I saw it with grew up in Mexico and filled me in.  Agreed- its a good movie.  I'm not crazy about the Station Agent though- it's well done, but kind of hollow.

And I'll throw in a recommendation for the Night Porter, with Dirk Bogarde.  Or how about Belle de Jour with Catherine Deneuve?
