It was kind of funny that in the early days of the internet when there were about 4 dating sites, I signed on to a Christian site called cy-bear.com (I think the cy might have been 'Christian Youth'?)

They let me post my profile which included spanking and a hint about oral sex without remark.

However, AOL, WHICH I WAS PAYING FOR, refused exactly the same ad.

My impression was that sexuality was just fine within the Christian context.

I am a Christian and feel like BDSM fits very well with my religion. God is just the uber-dominant. If that makes any sense? I guess I get that idea from the book of Job. I told my mom when I was nine that I had a crush on God, so apparently I've always been attracted to some sort of power dynamic? lol

Within my own church, there is a push for opening our minds and our hearts to those who are different. I wouldn't come out to anyone in my church, but baby steps are steps nonetheless. I think if a lot of Christians could get past the whips and chains, they could appreciate the Dominant/submissive relationship as a beautiful and moving mirror of God's own relationship to man.

born into a catholic home, went to parochial school, even served as an alter boy cuz it was what all the other kool kids were doing and we got to sit while everyone else had to kneel. which reminds me of a couple kind of funny stories.

Once during mass we were late lighting up the incense, so we lit it. Now the way you would get it buring is to swing back and forth cuz its like lighting a one charcoal mini grill. Anyway the kid with me got the bright idea to swing this heavy brass incense burner whatever they call it around in circles over his head to get it to lite faster. Well the chain broke and it hit the tile floor flew 40 feet hit the cement block wall and like 15 clang smash crash and dings later this thing finally stops. well there was no physical door on the sacristy and being a cement block building the whole church was echoing with this racket and close to 300+ people dumbfounded.

The priest in his later 60's literally flew into the sacristy and was livid to see this as we were scrambling to get it all back into one piece and pick this hot burning charcoal off of the floor and get it back in the burner before it burned the tile LOL

There was no chain left on it as they were in 2 pieces so he skipped doing the inscense routine for that mass. He never touched us but we were the winners of our own personalized 15 minute sermon. lol

i still get a chuckle when i think back on that

anyway: read the bible a few times and now i am a born again atheist.

You may have this impression because the definition of a D/s relationship is very very similar to the bible's definition of how husbands and wives should be with each other. Also it is true the discipline and such is a similar teaching, although the bible certainly does not encourage open or in the traditional conservative Christian terms.....deviant practices such as S/M. :O)

One might also say that much of the mindset of a D/s relationship is similar to simple 'old fashioned' values. Much like how male/female relationships were throughout the centuries prior to todays 'equal rights' and 'feminist' movements. (I'm not bashing either by the way!)

There is nothing new or unique about the D/s or BDSM lifestyles. So I suspect you could draw parallels all over the place. Oh, btw, there are a lot of Christian BDSM'ers. Most who hold to their Christian values keep it monogomous and don't venture too far into the S/M side, but there is the same draw for them, they are people too and have the same desires as the rest. The D/s definition is quite a draw for the traditional Christian if they can get past their presumed bias against it as perverted and such.

Exactly. "Wives submit to your husbands. Husbands, cherish your wives as God cherishes the church." The element of submission and protection/leadership is apparent in both Christianity and D/s. my sister lives in such a way, as a very strict Christian (head covering and all). She serves her husband and her family. The only difference is her views on sex as a perversion. Boy would she be in for a shock if she really knew me....

i saw a great bumper sticker recently: "Dear God, Please save me from your people." Loved it.

I agree with amayos, BDSM and christianity do seem similar at times. Maybe its just the simple foundation in both BDSM and christianity of surrendering yourself to something greater.

I wonder, if christianity works so well for so many people, could BDSM work on a large scale under the right circumstances?

Anyhoo, it has been my experience that a lot of pagans frequent this site. I for one, am a devout foxglovist. Now if you will excuse me, its time for my daily chocolate sacrifice.

Another Pagan here as well, survivor from 12 years of forced parochial schooling.

What amuses Me endlessly about the Catholic Church is the extreme nature of the purification rituals. These activities include but are not limited to: confessionals,
crawling/kneeling on a path and praying, self-flaggelation, fasting, celibacy and hair
shirts. Add in the hard-core believers who have the stigmata manifestations and crucification reinactments and damn...there are some real masochists in the
Holy Catholic Church!

That observation surprises me a little bit, because I've been struck by how many NON-Christians are on this site. My neighborhood is much more Christian than Collarme.

Something just occured to me. Not only on this site, but on many many others relating to BDSM, their are either a great deal of Christians actively posting, or the site has some kind of Christian saying or just something dealing with the religion. I know that Domestic Discipline is a Christian thing, but it is not just on those sites. Even here, it seems like everyone is a Christian.

i agree. When i spent time in chat rooms, Christians not only seemed to be the minority but their views/faith were often scoffed at. i saw one Christian D/s room in yahoo chat, back when the user rooms were open. Aside from that, anyone so much as brought up that faith and whoa nelly, good luck!

Ask how many people are Christian when you give them a choice between life in jail and their faith... You might be surprised.

The unofrtunate thing about many "Christians" is.. the are liek the folks that use the term "jewish" interchanegably with heridty and faith/religion... Born to "Christian" parents... so I must be a "Christian"...

I was raised as Baptist, much liek Jali... 2nd generation lay Pastor... Now follow the Morovaian form of Christian Religion...

Been kinky since teens, still am... My ex-wife and I discussed gettig back together and she was surpised at her counsleor (church Pastor) reaction to being kinky...

She was rasied Catholic (Bavarian Catholic Mother), converted to Baptist in teens...

Pastor told her as long as no damage (emotional or physical) and was between husband and wife, go for it...

nfortunately, other thigns got in our way...

The Humanist philosophy was best summed up in a Hank Williams Jr. song; "Why Can't Everybody Else Leave Everybody Else Alone?"

I think that is where most of the hostility toward Christians and especially Catholics comes from. They will NOT leave everybody else alone. Always wanting to do "missionary work" and "save" someone.

And the new "savers"? Why it is the LDS, or Mormons. I preferred them when they distrusted the "outside" and kept to themselves and their several wives.

I think there's a lot more spiritual diversity here than you may be seeing. I am an Illuminance Fellowship abbess... the closest I can come to a generic description is "spiritual humanist", though that isn't quite right either. It is also important to remember that "Christian" is a huge package in terms of people, and individual Christians are liable to be as diverse in their expressions of their lives, relationships, and sexuality as any other group might be. Generalizations are rarely productive, and often divisive.

I have nothing against them, but this strikes me as odd, because Catholics/Christians usually seem to be condemning this kind of sexual activity. I remember years ago when a priest told me BDSM in any form was evil. Are you all just changing your minds or does BDSM somehow relate to Christian thought in a way I was unaware?

One thing I like to keep in mind when hearing some Christian higher ups (or those from other religions) condemning BDSM, or anything else. How much do they really know about it? Those in religious positions of authority are supposed to be above reproach. Not that they all are, but I'd assume that to be the ideal. Which means that they have probably grown up in a religious home and known that religion all their lives. Again, not always, but generally. So when they were growing up, you know that things were even more stringent than they are now. So they never had a chance to get exposed to things like BDSM. How much can they really know? They know that it's "deviant" because that's what they were told. Whenever someone condemns something as evil, I always want to ask just how much they really know about it.
Not to mention, I've often thought that religion is something of a haven for the close-minded. Something with a set of rules and morals that they can follow and then point to everyone else and say "I'm better and more moral than them." Again, I know this isn't anything close to the norm, but I think that mindset might be more common among those who look at anything they don't know or understand and call it evil.
And even if someone does know something about BDSM, that doesn't mean they understand it. Some things you just have to experience to understand. And if you don't have a Dominant, submissive, painslut, etc. in you, then you're never going to be able to truly understand it. And it can be very easy to look at things you can't make any sense out of and say "it can't be right."
