ORIGINAL: VivaciousSub I'm a spiritual person - I believe in God. I don't follow any particular religion, because I feel that my relationship with a higher power is intensely personal and doesn't need to be expressed through any one set of practices, tenets or dogmas. That said, I do very much like the ritual of Mass - it's very soothing and reminds me of my childhood. So, I go every once in awhile. very true. Spirtual gatherings can be soothing. Though in my youth, when I was at church every Sunday (plus some evening services) it was always a robotic routine......all stand up sing a verse, sit down while we hear a bible reading.....up to sing a hymn....down to hear a bible reading....up for a hymn....down for minister preaching.....heads lowered for a prayer. By this point, an old bloke in the back pew, always started jangling the coins in his pocket - which was his hint for the rector to wind the service up and let's be going home. I've never been one for routines. My brain is somewhat of a free spirit. Routines are for zombies and those who want to brainwash. Mind you, probably the biggest reason for me not enjoying church so much, was the fear that the preachers sought to instil in the congregation. I could never figure why if God is good, why he'd abandon us (what he had created) to burn in hell for eternity. That doesn't make any sense. The old testament and the new testament are also totally contradictory in many key aspects. quote:
ORIGINAL: OttersSwim I know several people who are devout Christians. The interesting thing is, none of them are part of a -religion- or -church-. They are the most beautiful and serene people. Their relationship with God does not come from a church, it comes from their internal heart connection to the divine. They pray, read the bible, and do not proselytize, but are happy to talk about it if you ask them. They live their faith, not wearing it like a coat, but it is part of their whole being. They are amazing to be around as they have a deep sense of wonder and excitement, with a rock steady underlying feel to them. I know similar people and they radiate goodness from within....beautiful people. It's what is in someone's heart, and their actions.....as opposed to what they say and claim to be. Tony Bliar being an example.....the Jimmy Swaggert of British politics.
