When you are made dictator, will people be allowed to profit from hunger?  [;)]

Since when did human suffering become an ethical business to profit from? I don't care if the NHS has a monopoly they can keep their monopoly.

Your problems seem indicative of the kind of results one should expect with British dental care:

You've missed his point.  The issue isn't that most dentists are NHS dentists.  It's the large proportion that will only take private patients.

People will always be fed regardless of if they can afford it. The UK government runs charity schemes to feed people in the UK so there is no real difference in that respect.

I don't pay an insurance company starvation premiums if that is what you mean i.e. paying a company to ensure I am fed if I can't afford to buy food.

Starbuck09 -> RE: Britons defend their health care from US criticism (8/15/2009 7:16:44 AM)

As apocalypso has pointed out sanity the point of the problem in that post is not the preponderance of n.h.s. dentists. Regardless on that logic would any single story about the nightmare of getting health care if you are poor in america be indicative of the problems with the american system?

It's true, Lucy, that Obama has openly said in the past that it will take time but eventually private insurers can be driven out of business. The headlines this morning have Obama lecturing anyone who will listen on how evil health insurance companies are, he's sounding an awful lot like his amigo Hugo Chavez:

Obama keeps heat on insurance firms

Both the UK and Canada have private insurance companies. Nothing I have seen or read or watched apart from the scare mongers tells me that ALL private insurance will be stamped out, cmon stop grasping at straws and using stereotypes.

Starbuck09 -> RE: Britons defend their health care from US criticism (8/15/2009 7:18:58 AM)

We have had a health care system run by the government for around sixty years sanity and we still have a thriving private health care service.

The article I quoted claims British dentists don't clean people's teeth, the one quoted claimed that's just something American dentists do to satisfy insurance companies:

quote:

"That's it?" I asked my dentist, a middle-aged Indian gentleman with Einstein-like hair and a wry sense of humor, as he lowered my chair to the floor. "You're done?"

"What were you expecting -- massage and facial?" he retorted.

"But that was like . . . 10 minutes!" I said in disbelief. "What about the teeth-cleaning?"

"Your teeth are perfectly clean," he replied. "And where they weren't, I gave them a scrub. Don't let those American dentists fool you. They don't need to spend all that time on you. They just have to justify their existence to the insurance companies."

Obama's stated claim is that he's going to change that here.

Starbuck09 -> RE: Britons defend their health care from US criticism (8/15/2009 7:23:50 AM)

Well British dentists do clean people's teeth. I have mine cleaned every six months when I go to the dentist for a check up.

So farmers should be driven out of business?

Kelloggs is an evil empire?

*looks at title of the thread*

Ah that is right this is about Britain not the US, I thought so. In the British system the private sector is still very much alive and well, rather than predicting what may happen in the future (despite the fact that in actual countries with state health care that isn't the case)

Starbuck09 -> RE: Britons defend their health care from US criticism (8/15/2009 7:26:00 AM)

Obama's intentions are nothing to do with Britian. Therefore if Obama is claiming to have a different system to Britian then there is no logic whatsoever in using Britian's system to judge what would happen in america. In fact such a gambit would backfire enormously as it is doing now as the british system is excellent and people will think it is a good idea to instigate in their own country.

Did I say doctors should be?

You noticed that too eh? What gave them away for me was the fact the chicken symbol is very similar to the Google search symbol with G outlined in colours.

edit: shouldn't = should (Freudian slippage.)

Okay then, automobile insurers profit off of tragic accidents. [:(]

Shouldn't government insure all our vehicles, like they do with health care in Britain?

Some people drive like maniacs, but some people order meat pizza... so perhaps we should all have government automobile coverage, and a camera in every car.

It is personal choice to drive a car.

Next week I think I'll walk in front of a big Truck because I just love staying in Hospitals at tax payers’ expense.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Britons defend their health care from US criticism (8/15/2009 7:43:11 AM)

Seems like this is going to become yet another thread where people snipe over silly pedantic things.

Either way, as a British person i like our system, and certainly on an ideological level prefer it to the US one

Sanity -> RE: Britons defend their health care from US criticism (8/15/2009 7:46:31 AM)

Not out West. We don't have a corner store or a hospital at every tumbleweed crossing.

So as dictator you would also round everyone up and make them live in the ghetto of your choosing?
