Just... wow. Thank you, Arpig, that was lovely.

Seconded

I notice you haven't answered my question.  Name me another country where this could happen.  A country with a manned space program where a child of the lowest caste of immigrant (do we need to argue where migrant workers fall in the pecking order???) could rise to the level this man has achieved?  I'm not holding my breath.  Let's see some foundation for you to challenge my "unfounded" assertions.

...

Blind patriotism, as I've been accused of?  Obviously, someone has never read my posts regarding the US auto industry, much less my thoughts on the poverty maintenance and continuation policies of our government, or any of my other critiques of the status quo.  Other than having enjoyed owning a French car, I have no use for the French.  Is that what is meant?

I'm going to bed.  You can try and google up other countries with manned space programs, and read up on their immigration laws if you want.  Have fun with that.

I'm not going to bother, because the post to which I was responding had nothing at all to do with space programs. You asked if there were any other countries in the world where the son of an immigrant could even dream of becoming president, and in which at the end of that president's term, he or she could leave office without the country having to endure a bloody coup. That was the statement that I found absurd, and still do - your question of "where else could this sort of stuff even be dreamed of?" My reply to that had nothing to do with space programs because the post had nothing to do with space programs.

Unfortunately, since George Bush or W, Dubya was elected I find America scary.

Try to contain your disgust, Panda.

Do you have to go on holiday outside the U.S. during Independence Day if you are to avoid becoming physically ill?

Just about every other democracy in the world, I suppose. What do you think, we're the only country in the world where the people don't wear animal skins and live in caves? Jesus, this thread is getting more ridiculous by the hour.

The title of the thread itself is "Only in America", man.

I agree with Rule. This is just a really weird thread. A lot of people criticize the US, but where in the world you get the idea that means they think America is only bad is a complete mystery to me.

For me personally, I would say that what turns me off about Americans/America is the sometimes seen egocentric patriotism.

It seems like its either, "Those disgusting Americans lack culture" or "Those disgusting Americans and their disgusting love of Americana make me sick".

Yeah, Lilly hates Americans.  As I was saying to my uncle in Chicago the other day.

For me personally, I don't say anything turns me off about americans as a group because I try not to judge people like that. Not all americans are the same any more than all canadians are the same. It's a shame you can't start a thread about something good without it turning into ripping each other apart.

No, it's a shame something good was posted in a manner to bait controversy.

I think it is the nature of building something up by ripping something else apart which was the very premise of this thread. My post was meant to be ironic, I appologise if it did not come across that way.

And then to top that off by bragging that America is the only country where immigrants can even dream of being astronauts and presidents, or whatever point it was that you were trying to make there, is just too much.

I agree, especially in the light of the fact that only 'natural born citizens' (like Obama :-) can ever aspire to become president. Those who immigrate to America, no matter how young, and who acquire Amewikhaaan citizenship, even during their childhood, can never aspire to become president. That particular avenue is barred for them.

Gosh Dad, thanks for reminding us.

May I remind you there is some question of what the topic of the thread actually is?

Here are the first words of the OP:

"As USA bashing seems to be coming right back into fashion.....
"

Does bashing mean not waving the flag and proclaiming I live in the greatest God-durned country on Earth?

Apparently, simply pointing out that America isn't that much better than a lot of other countries now constitutes bashing. Seig heil!
