'08 race worker held in damage to Colorado Democratic HQ

Police said that about 2:20 a.m., 24-year-old Maurice Schwenkler, now in custody, and an at-large accomplice took a hammer to the picture windows displaying posters touting President Barack Obama and his health care reform efforts.

Early Tuesday, Democratic Party chairwoman Pat Waak said the damage to her building in Denver's art district was a consequence of "an effort on the other side to stir up hate."

...

"What I've been saying is there is a lot of rhetoric out there from both sides of the spectrum," Waak said. "That's what's been disturbing to me. People are saying a lot of things not appropriate for civil discourse."

For weeks, people on both sides of the health care debate have rallied across the country.

Schwenkler is charged with criminal mischief and is to make his first appearance in Denver County Court today.

He is accused of doing an estimated $11,000 in damage and could face a felony conviction.

Them damn Rethuglicans! Doing anything to stir up hate!

Oh ... wait ....

One of two people suspected of shattering 11 windows Tuesday morning at the state Democratic Party headquarters has an arrest record and a history of helping a Democratic political candidate, public records show.

and

Schwenkler received $500 in November 2008 to walk door-to-door in support of Democrat Mollie Cullom, who lost her race to Republican state Rep. David Balmer of Centennial.

and

Schwenkler was one of dozens of paid canvassers bankrolled by the Colorado Citizens' Coalition, a political 527 committee Schwenkler has worked for Democratic causes. (Denver Police Department ) funded by labor groups and well-known, wealthy liberal donors.

In those disclosures, Schwenkler's address is listed as Derailer Bicycle Cooperative, a free community bicycle collective that operates just around the corner from the Democratic headquarters. Multiple volunteers at the collective declined to discuss Schwenkler, though they said he was affiliated with the group.

and

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that Schwenkler was also arrested in St. Paul, Minn., on the last day of the 2008 Republican convention on a charge of unlawful assembly. (AP)

I guess this sums up a lot:

Denver Police said they don't know what motivated the suspects. The headquarters was unoccupied at the time and there were no injuries reported.

But you and I know, don't we?

It obvious that those damn rich, astro-turfing republicans paid him to do this, to try to make the left look bad!

Schwenkler is obviously an agent provocateur of them right-wing, neo-con, rich Christian bastards!

Well, we won't be fooled! [:D]

I'm actually almost speechless.

This is just way too much of a stretch for anyone to take seriously.

Except for you, of course.

I disagree RML, Firms post quotes Pat Waak as blaming Republicans, he is correct to point out the damage was carried out by a Democrat supporter.

RML, I think the Denver post and police depts are taking it seriously also.

Typical leftist in action....

Is this a claim you really want to make? The events of May and June might make an interesting comparison for typical rightist action.

I believe I did.

If you feel you have some sort of defense of this action, lets hear it.

I have no desire to defend this action. It was vandalism at its worst and if Ms. Waak spoke of this as a republican act of vandalism, then is seems to be incorrect.

What I will take issue with is your comment that this is a "typical leftest action". Just as I do not paint the swastika carrying, "no" screaming, nazi shouters as the "typical" republican or rightest, I would expect a little better. Let me rephrase. I would expect a little better from most people.

But by all means, if anyone wants to, they can continue to try to demonize anyone to the left of Joe McCarthy and shout with glee at every possible embarrassment to the left caused by a fringe loony. They also can continue to spout truths, personal attacks and faulty logic while playing the poor victim to anyone who dares to try to address another viewpoint.

Yes, that is everyone's right in this country because of the beauty of free speech. We are just fortunate here on this board not to have anyone like that around to lower the level of the discussion, aren't we?

SOT, I was takling to Dom Ken. I know you did not, and do not seem to be the sort of person who would defend this political vandalism. But I am curious to hear his defense of it.

So its just the use of the word typical, that bothers you here?
http://www.collarchat.com/m_2770517/mpage_4/tm.htm# In his post you are quite derogatory towards Conservatives "morally and ideologically bankrupt." And seemed to have no problem with the following post either.

A democratic supporter?

He was a paid canvasser.

I doubt he is even registered to vote much less caring what political party he was getting paid from.

As for the vandalism, there has been no stated motive.

Unless you want to believe the Republican representative of the district:

Balmer said he suspects the vandalism might have been aimed at making the GOP look bad.
"This sounds like the type of Democratic tactic from the left fringe trying to make Republicans look mean-spirited," Balmer said. "In this case, it blew up in their face. He was caught red-handed."

No, typical rightist hyperbole.

How do you know he wasn't just pissed at the local Democratic Party for some perceived slight?

rightwinghippie -> RE: Denver Dem HQ vandalized by Republican Health Care Protesters ... (8/26/2009 6:11:54 PM)

[:D] Sure, that a bit of hyperbole....

Why would you think I think he did not do it for a percieved slight? I never said anything of the sort.

Lucylastic -> RE: Denver Dem HQ vandalized by Republican Health Care Protesters ... (8/26/2009 6:24:13 PM)

just to add to the ridiculousness of it all
I hear he was a plant from the repubs to work for the dems during election and then to screw with the Dem HQ, it was a plot within a plot ....say what are the political leanings of the other chap involved??? is there brain washing involved??

Both sides have their idiots, it reminds me of that chick who carved a B in her own cheek during the campaign
just pointing it out to make a jab is proving its six of one and half a dozen of the other!!!!!
oh the irony eh?

Who said anything about defending the act of vandalism?

However if that is the standard you believe applies then let's discuss these typical rightists and their actions:
Jim David Adkisson
Scott Roeder
James Wenneker Von Brunn

Or perhaps you might want to be careful about painting with quite so broad a brush.

Was this one of those "anything of the sort" comments?

"I know you did not, and do not seem to be the sort of person who would defend this political vandalism."

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Denver Dem HQ vandalized by Republican Health Care Protesters ... (8/26/2009 7:15:12 PM)

So you agree that Ms. Waak is way off base with her comments, since the motive is unclear, and poltical affiliation may not be certain? Since she is way off base, what do you think of her jumping to the conclusions that she did?

RML, The 2 statements you are highlighting are not in contradiction, I don't understand your point.

He was a political activist who attacked a political operations headquarters. Of course it was Political.

If I had to place a bet based on my extremely limited knowledge of the specifics of this event. I would say he is a far left type who worked to get the Dems in power and now feels betrayed. About the War, torture, dropping of the public option or indefinite detention, who knows....

servantforuse -> RE: Denver Dem HQ vandalized by Republican Health Care Protesters ... (8/26/2009 8:15:01 PM)

I'll also bet that this guy will be in Boston for the upcoming G 20 meetings..

rightwinghippie -> RE: Denver Dem HQ vandalized by Republican Health Care Protesters ... (8/26/2009 8:43:34 PM)

Hopefully, he will be in jail...

Brain -> RE: Denver Dem HQ vandalized by Republican Health Care Protesters ... (8/26/2009 9:07:04 PM)

Your plant theory makes sense to me. I know from personal experience being involved with conservatives in the past with campaigns they are capable of many sleazy dirty tricks. And it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the son of a bitch is really a Republican plant in the Democratic campaign in order to cause trouble. That makes sense and it’s probably the truth.

This whole story doesn’t make sense and like Judge Judy says, if it doesn’t make sense it’s a lie. What you said makes sense to me and that is probably the truth.

Firm, you have my permission to use Dick Cheney to take out the son of a bitch.
