Arpig -> RE: Could we kindly cut the nazi/communist crap? (8/29/2009 9:43:00 PM)

I really hate the nazi/commie name calling....when I agree with Firm (which I have done) I am a Nazi, when I agree with Panda (which I have done) I am a commie....is it any wonder I am schizophrenic?

I think it's only when you agree with both of us at the same time that you need to start questioning your sanity!

Nah, just kidding. Firm and I agree on a lot of things.

rightwinghippie -> RE: Could we kindly cut the nazi/communist crap? (8/29/2009 9:52:57 PM)

I don't they would have felt that way at all. They had very serious opinions about the seperation of church and state. Not this silly guy wants to ruin someone else's 75 year old memorial stuff. He could have put up his bhudist memorial in millions of other places. The cross was grandfathered in.

I don't believe Madison and Hamilton would have supported destroying a memorial put up by war vets. Not at all. I would imagine them actually having a problem with the Feds taking the private land to make the park in the first place. Where exactly is that authorised in the Constitution? And they would certainly respect the local culture that has had the cross up there since 1934 without being a problem.

I would imagine they would want to give the bhudist a place somewhere else. But that wasn't really the point, was it?

You got the 9th (most overturned court in America, that has a terrible record on Church State issues) to rule your way, but it's horrible.

Who wants to tear down a 75 year old War memorial? Like I said before, Liberals make themselves look bad, with no help from the Right at all.

The cross has been there for Generations.

Arpig -> RE: Could we kindly cut the nazi/communist crap? (8/29/2009 10:17:55 PM)

I agree with you hippie, if the cross was there when they took the land then it should be left there. I mean do they intend to remove all the religious symbols from the Alamo....it was a Catholic mission that just happened to be where the Texans holed up.

That would have been seperate but not equal. That's still unconstitutional. And nothing is ever grandfathered in under the Constitution.

What local culture? The cross is on an isolate dhill a long way from anywhere, it is in the middle of a federal reserve after all. It hasn't been up since 1934. A wooden cross was put up in 1934 and functionally abandoned. Sometime just before or just after the federal government took control of the land the white pipe cross was erected.

The founders quite clearly envisioned the taking of private property for public purposes. they enshrined the governments ability to do so in the Constitution.

The point is no religious disply on government property that puts one faith over any other. You don't have to like it but the law is the law.

BTW what makes this thing a war memorial beyond the claim of the person who erected it? There's no plaque or dedication. If declaring a relgious symbol on public land to be a war memorial makes it safe from the 1st amendment what's to stop the Utah state legislature from declaring the big mormon churches in utah to all be war memorials and start forcing the citizens of the state to pay for their upkeep?

Been to the Alamo several times and while it is distinctively a Catholic mission I cannot recall seeing any crosses displayed anywhere.

As they say on GFAQs, people who use those terms in that way have "no grasp of history."

The issue you're bringing up is really quite simple. A latin cross is on federal land over looking a highway between LA and Vegas, why the spot was chosen in the first place. When a person requested that he be allowed to put up a buddhist symbol to commemorate the same war dead the National Park Service turned him down. That makes the display an unconstitutional endorsement of one religion over another which is clearly not what the founders wanted. The ACLU is defending one of the bedrock principles upon which this nation is built and some people are, as usual, trying to make the ACLU out to be in the wrong when they are doing asomething I'm 100% positive Madison, Hamilton and Jefferson would have considered every American's duty.

Getting confused about what thread you are posting on, Ken???

It has been in a public post, every time I have told someone I felt they were over the line of civil discussion, Ken, and you don't get to tell me what my values are or how to do it.

I don't care if you start calling out those on the left or not, Ken.  I'm just saying don't fucking whimper, snivel and whine about what the right call the President when you have remained silent about the terminology chosen by those on the left.  If we throw calling "racist" into the mix with "nazi" and "commie," you get yourself high onto the list of offenders.

rightwinghippie -> RE: Could we kindly cut the nazi/communist crap? (8/30/2009 1:29:43 AM)

Domken, what public purpose was served by taking away the land where some WW1 vets put up a memorial to their dead comrades? It was not abandoned, it has been maintained and repaired over the years. Yes someone stole the plaque, so what.

You are correct that the court rulings up in the 9th are on your side. But the 9th is the most radical in the nation and most overturned on these issues. Wierdly enough, it wasn't a problem for almost 70 years, then some guy from a different state sets up a fake request to get a court case.....

You may win. Enjoy your victory of taking down a 75 year old Organic War Mmemorial, if you get it. But don't pretend it is "the Right" making liberals look bad, when y'all do stuff like this.

Also you are incorrect. When land is taken to create a park, former and customary users are often "grandfathered" in so they can continue to access thier inholdings or engage in customary use. In Denali Park for example, people who lived in Kantishna and thier descendants are allowed to take vehicles in and several privledges that the public does not get. They were there befor the park.

It certainly was a nice try on your part to get the two sides to be more agreeable but reading the comments or replies it doesn’t look like that’s possible.

This explains a lot about the behavior of both parties and the people in both parties. It appears they are both under corporate control.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: Could we kindly cut the nazi/communist crap? (8/30/2009 4:02:19 AM)

FR

It is funny because we do not really get it to the same extent in the uk, generally we are more left wing than you anyways, our 'right wing conservative' party is pretty similar to your democratic. Sure we debate and disagree on lots of things but the only party regularly compared to Nazi's is the BNP, because well there are many comparable elements.

This thread alone has produced people doing the very thing the OP has asked for people to stop, the post on the first page really made me boggle it was so surreal.

The funniest thing is that your left wing is nothing like communism at all, and also being left wing isn't actually that bad, the residual red under the bed feeling is quite strange. On the same token I do not believe your republicans are much like Hitler either.

I was going to write a post about it recently, after the NHS thread that was here. The very same people who were complaining about Obama's idea for health care were up in arms when he made a statement about tempering it, and it got me wondering. Do you support sides rather than ideas? It kinda makes me question democracy a bit (this is something the UK is as guilty of) pick a side and stick to it regardless of what is said. I find it interesting on here because the amount of double think that is clearly expressed, sometimes in the same post without any acknowledgment from the poster is baffling.

Apocalypso -> RE: Could we kindly cut the nazi/communist crap? (8/30/2009 6:51:17 AM)

Yeah, how many times do those of us who actually are members of the far left have to tell you Obama isn't one of us, before you actually pay attention?

This has gotten past the point of amusement. It is becoming a distraction to any rational discussion or debate that can take place. This is as true in these threads as it is in the town hall meetings.

Can we please take a moment for a quick cup of nice, cool reality?

Liberals are not communists. They do not want to destroy the democratic government process. They do not want to make this a welfare state. They do not want to turn this country into a new version of Stalinist Russia.

Conservatives are not fascists. They do not want to destroy the democratic government process. They do not want to make this a government only for rich, white Christians. They do not want to see anyone who is not a rich white Christian hunted down and destroyed.

We have serious differences in viewpoint. We have major differences in what we consider the appropriate actions are to solve the problems that face the country. But can we stop with the boogie man, communist, nazi nonsense long enough to maybe discuss the issues?

It's because Liberals are Socialists or Communist Welfare Babies.
Neo-Conservative which tend to call them selves Conservatives, are war mongering, bible thumping, Control Freaks.

What's the debate? It seems fairly accurate on the average.

Guess I should add a [:D], before someone thinks I'm completely serious, I'm not just 80%

So IOW so rare as to not matter and you expect something out of me? I just searched your posts for the last 6 months and didn't find any of these supposed condemnations for people over the line. I did however find several instances of you cheerleading those same posters.

Why do you tell stupid lies, Ken?  Do you think you have such credibility that your lies will just be accepted?  If you searched the last 6 months, then you certainly would have come across this comment from May 22,

Didn't we have enough of this bullshit in the last eight years, Crue?  I realize that the Dems lowered to bar to revolting levels.  Must the right automatically behave in the same classless manner?

Entirely possible, I have never been there and just assumed that as a mission there would be some crosses, etc.built intothe structure. I did a quick search of images and saw nothing of a religious nature so perhaps it was a crumby example....that's what one gets for making assumptions eh? [;)]
