Seriously though: most people agree that raising the level of the political debate is in order (and not just in the United States, actually, although it is perhaps more painfully needed here than elsewhere - I thank Lee Atwater for this shitty situation), but most people also realise that such a noble goal is very difficult to attain, especially in the light of what's happening with the healthcare debate. After a while, people give up, and just want to have fun. As CelticLord would say: "This is in the order of things."

This is only tangentially a reply to your post Firm, mostly prompted by your question... Because the question in the OP was answered quite conclusively early on...it was a resounding no. It devolved into a pissing contest as to who was the most magnanimous towards the other side...none of you guys is magnanimous towards the other side...the Right can't seem to decide if Obama is a Nazi or a commie but you seem certain he is out to destroy the US. The Left seems determined that the righties are all closet fascists bound and determined to institute a Christian dictatorship. One thing I really do advise you all to do before you start throwing around epithets like Nazi/commie/socialist/fascist, is to do some reading...learn what those ideologies actually consist of and you will see that none of those epithets pertain to the mainstream of either party. Yes these days it is you guys getting called on pulling the Nazi card, but that's because these days it is the right that is pulling the Nazi card. It used to be the left pulling it, and then those on the right would scream and yell just the way those on the left are doing now....and likewise it was the left defending the accusations just as it is the right defending them now. Both of you are wrong...Neither the Dems or the Reps are Nazis, neither are fascists, neither are communists, and neither are socialists. None of those political movements has any real standing in the US, and to throw the words around the way they are being thrown around shows a glaring ignorance as to their actual meaning. They are used to inflame the followers (just as they were when GWB was wrongly accused of being a Nazi or a fascist) and to avoid actual debate...after all if the opposing position is a Nazi position, who the hell would want to defend it? You have an actual Nazi party or two in the US, why don't you email them and ask them if they support Obama? Bet you can guess what they'd say.....

Arpig, and Lilly, Thanks for the thoughtful responses. I do think, however, that all the effort that some posters put into derailing and hijacking could have went into more productive posts. Why let the posters who "tossed the accusations" back and forth get away with it? Engage them deeper. Personally, I made my initial comments, was challenged, responded, and then dropped out because I didn't want to be part of the tit-for-tat any more than I already had. I do think that there is room for a good discussion because of the tit-for-tat part of the discussion. Simply derailing and turning the thread into a joke that will soon be in "random stupidity" doesn't benefit anyone. Firm

I do not think there is much of a debate to be had here because it degenerates so quickly, when people question it does not turn into discussion but as you say tit for tat and 'you are twisting my words'. In the US neither of the big two can really be compared to communists or fascists they just can't, yet that is what both sides feel comfortable doing. There is no moral high ground here
