Aileen1968 -> Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 7:36:25 PM)

We went to Paddles last night and were not blown away. It's the only public place we've ever gone to so we really don't know how it compares to others.
The first thing that turned us off was the layout. The hallways were narrow and you sometimes literally had to step over someone who was scening in the middle of the hallway...i.e. two dommes were having their boots licked by two sub males who were sprawled out blocking the access to the left side. We watched an hour long flogging and found the two to be unemotional and cold. It was as if they were following a script. In fact just about every scene we watched was void of energy and excitement and emotion. Not even gonna get into all of the single male wankers trolling around. And the biggest issue we had was that there were no sanitary wipes. People would use the dungeon furniture with bare skin and then not wipe it down afterwards. Yuck. Is this how a typical dungeon tends to be? I doubt we'll ever go back there for these reasons. We were surprised because Paddles is supposed to be one of the better clubs.

DarkSteven -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 7:46:17 PM)

I've been to play parties at Celebration of Power, Uncommon Ground, a private party at a house owned by NaplesDomme, and the Labyrinth, as well as spanking parties at Crimson Moons and Shadow Lane. All of them had good energy, and were well laid out, even Crimson Moons, NaplesDomme's place, and CoP, which were at private residences.

I do have to say that not all had wipes, but most did.

Edited to add:  This is a list of all the public playplaces I attended, not a partial list.  None of them were anything like your experience at Paddles.  You hit a bad one first time out.

Paddles is notoriously grungy.  I have been there.

That description sounds much like the old Power Exchange in SF. That place got too grungy even for the goth community, who used to dress up and hit the place about once a month. We used to joke about invading the place with a dozen people with pressure washers.

lovingpet -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 8:13:25 PM)

No, they aren't all like that. I have not been to Paddles, so I don't know how it usually is there, but I would not go to a club where I didn't feel comfortable and that I believed to be hygenic. There are others out there that are not like that. Don't rule out another public adventure, but do realize it may take some time to find one that is a good fit for you. Every place isn't for everybody. Consider it a compatibility issue. LOL

I've never been there myself, although I have heard it's very small.  Although NY/NJ is kink rich in terms of #s of kinksters, there are not a lot of public clubs, I'm guessing because the law is not terribly friendly to them.

DomImus -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 8:45:52 PM)

I've been to 1763 in Atlanta and also sporadically attended a monthly play party at a private residence. Public play places are not entirely my cup of tea but they were clean and tidy and people followed cleanliness rules. I recall a thread recently where you had less than complimentary things to say about a munch you only saw happening from across the room at a restaurant so I would not expect you to give a glowing review of a dungeon. You actually said you would not attend a munch because of it - why in the world would you then go to a dungeon?

Most of the play I saw done in public put me to sleep quicker than Sominex. I have to agree with you there.

CalifChick -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 9:08:56 PM)

I have been to a few dungeons and I saw cleaning and sanitizing supplies at all of them.  At our local dungeon, we require a towel on the equipment AND that the equipment be cleaned after use.  The DM's won't hesitate to hand someone a canister of clorox wipes if they try to walk away from the equipment.  I've never seen someone scening where the passage of others was impeded (but I've never been to Paddles either).

I would like to think your experience was NOT the norm, but my own exposure is fairly limited.

ElectraGlide -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 9:24:26 PM)

We always keep a container of sanitized wipes in the toy bag. The places we have been were great about enforcing play areas cleaned after by the users

porcelaine -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 9:24:45 PM)

nope. our club is nothing like that at all. we have a policy about play and truly allow a lot. just clean up your mess when you're done. i'm aware that each club differs on how it is run and a lot of that depends on the way it was setup business wise. i'm sorry to hear your experience was less than stellar. perhaps you'll check out some other places in the future.

I've had excellent experiences with The Society in Hartford, CT.  It's a very clean, well-maintained space with very friendly people (after a few visits, you feel more like family than random kinksters).  I highly recommend a visit to anyone living in southern New England or passing through the area.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 9:38:06 PM)

I have been to a couple of dungeons and both were nicely maintained.  A friend of mine lives in NY and never had anything great to say about Paddles, so I think it must be the club itself, and isn't indicative of all public play areas.

~Fast Reply~

Been to a few Play Parties and the Green Door, Club Sin, Fantasy & Pal Joeys @ Hide-n-Seek.

I can say that of them only Club Sin had Sanitary Spray at EVERY station Pal Joeys and The Green Door had them available and in most rooms. However the ability to Maintain proper Sanitary Cleaning is beyond many people. I have NEVER failed to see at a play party or a club someone fail to Sanitize something that they used in a less than sanitary manner. In fact it is because of this I carry a Bottle of Alcohol and a full body towel and a hand towel anytime I go to a Club (Except Green Door I've always known they were available there they advertise it on the web site) I try to wipe down everything before and after I use it.

That being said I also don't Squick out if I don't. Why? Cause you touch worse EVERY DAY.

You Open Doors, you touch ANYTHING in a bathroom including the Toiletpaper Dispencer which is by far the most gross and disgusting than the toilet itself. You touch Money every day and it is said the average American even puts it in their mouth. WAY DISGUSTING. And the worst of all, most silverware in restraunts is touched by 4 people after cleaning before it makes it to your table and you are subject to their sanitary habits.

Ever go to the Gym? SCARY AS HELL!!!

So all things considered I shower before I go to public places and shower when I am done. All things considered I could sit in a cum stain and still be more sanitary than most people are all day long.

That does not mean that you should NOT be more responsible than everyone else and just clean up anything you come in contact with but know that if you aren't there are nastier things than a scuzzy club.

If you worry that much about a Sanitary Condition bring 99.9 Isopropal Rubbing Alcohol and Wash down everything before and after you use it.

Take Responsibility for your own sterile conditions.

Last time I was at Paddles was about 5 years ago. I didn't stay there long because the people there weren't the type I would normally hang out with and the majority were malesubs but I did meet this Irish guy who who said he was a dom. We played for a bit..wasn't spectactular but had promise or so I thought. When we got back to the hotel room I had for the night he finally admitted he was a sub who was in the process of joining a monastery so he couldn't have sex and wanted me to beat him so he could be free of all his "sins" before he left.

Eerr...yeah....I told him he seemed like a nice enough guy and good luck in his life and showed him to the door...last time I ever returned to Paddles and last time I ever will.

Plus the owner seemed to think that he and his girl had to protect me all night because I was a single sub there. Sorry guys, just because I'm a single sub there doesn't mean I need some kind of protection or anything else there.

Sunnyfey -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 9:58:25 PM)

NO RUBBING ALCOHOL!!!!!!!!!!!

It only really kills tetanus (sp?). Use Lysol disinfectant spray or wipes.

And for cleaning skin before play (if you're doing needles ect) Technicare is the best stuff you can buy.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 10:25:25 PM)

We've been to many and have experienced the full range of sanitary conditions. Another opportunity to apply common sense and personal preference. One person's reason for disgust is another's moisturizing face cream.

Personally, we keep our own towels and disinfectant in our travel bag. Most places have disinfectant spray and wipes near the equipment. We've added similar spray and wipes in our little home dungeon and use it to wipe down the equipment when we are done playing, even if nobody else is around.

The distinguishing characteristic has been when single males are allowed in; it gets "messy". But even then, it depends on the particular night, particular crowd, particular scenes and play. I remember that was a function of going to a club, especially in NYC, it was going to be messy; somehow we survived. There's something to be said for raw, wet, passion. Can you have a 'clean', sanitary orgy? Would Woodstock have been as much fun without the rain and mud? Again, personal preference and we've passed at participating at some venues for both ends of the spectrum - too 'messy' and too 'sanitized'.

The biggest mistake people make at these clubs is to walk around barefoot. (Right WyldHrt?)

peachgirl -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 10:30:48 PM)

that hasn't been our experience, cleanliness has never been an issue.  sometimes it takes a little while to find a club you are comfortable with.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Eeeew....We Went To A Public Dungeon (8/29/2009 10:41:28 PM)

Well It's what I always used.

After Doing the Research I will tell you that we are BOTH Wrong about Alcohol. It seems the 99.9 percent stuff is good for cleaning my Blade before Knife work but the Cheap 50 cent Bottle of 70% Isopopyl Alcohol is more effective than the 5 dollar 99.9%.

As for what it kills Rubbing Alcohol will kill MOST Bacteria, In Fact from the other research I just did many different medical professionals will tell you that Alcohol is MORE effective than ANY Product said to be a Sanitizer on the market today. However I have yet to find anyting from the CDC on that as of yet. Apparently the reason Alcohol is used in most medical offices and hospitals around the world is because it is the only stuf PROVEN 100% of the time to kill the same amount of Bacteria regardless of the incubation period. The Handi Wipes that people use now days only work if used right after contamination after that they become nearly worthless.

I stick with my Alcohol but I'll switch out to the 70% after reading the link I put below.

THIS Article was very helpful and taught me MUCH about Sanitzation.  Below is the Exert on Alcohol.

f. ALCOHOLS
Alcohols exert their germicidal activity by denaturing bacterial proteins. In the absence of water, proteins are not readily denatured by alcohol and therefore a 70% solution of isopropyl alcohol is a much more effective sanitizer than the pure (99%) product. Isopropyl alcohol is capable of killing most bacteria within 5 minutes of exposure but is ineffective against spores and has limited virucidal activity. The main disadvantages towards the use of isopropyl alcohol is that it is flammable, and can not be diluted as quats or iodophors can and therefore is relatively expensive to use.
