So when is a person overweight, or even obese?

When you think of yourself as such? Or when other people perceive yourself as such?

Since some people have a completely distorted self perception, it is more objective to side with the opinion of the majority of other people, I contend.

Of course there is such a thing as the BMI, which is also an indicator.

I have got another indicator: I think I could loose ten to thirteen kilo's because I do not fit anymore into my fifteen year old pants. I call this indicator the Old Pants Indicator (the OPI), or alternatively Rule's Indicator (the RI).

I poll in order to know: is there a relation between diet and OPI overweight? In particular I want to know if there is a correlation between vegetarianism or non-vegetarianism and overweight or normal weight or obesity

the way my jeans fit is the only way i monitor my weight. I rarely weigh myself, as the numbers on the scale are a mind f**k. [:)]

That was a very short vacation. You missed a controversial thread which you might have wanted to contribute to. It was pulled, of course - but not before it had gone at least eight pages and had gotten over thirteen thousand hits.

I'm a protein-type (metabolic typing -rocks-). I started gaining a LOT of weight after years of prednisone and beta-interferon to deal with MS. I weigh less now than I did 15 years ago, and am very slowly but steadily dropping some of that extra poundage, despite still being on medication. How, you say? Well... ummm... I pretty much stopped buying lots of food -- vegetable or animal. I stopped eating most grains, because for me, they fill me up -and- out... I eat 20 g of protein with each meal... sometimes from nuts and seeds, but most often from animal products including lots of fish (especially flounder and salmon), some red meat, and some poultry. I eat lots of raw vegetables, and have abandoned any beverage but water, except that I allow myself -one- bottle of stevia- or agave-sweetened soda a week and one small glass of fruit juice for breakfast on either Saturday or Sunday. All other fruits/vegetables are as close to raw and as close to their whole state as I can manage.

I only buy food for one day. Since I got my motorbike (with it's tiny trunk), I stop each day on the way home from work, and pick up fresh food for supper, plus some fruit and veggies and eggs for the next day's meals. Sometimes I allow myself a grain-less treat (I adore coconut-milk ice cream), but usually only on payday. I eat a little rice, and the occasional quinoa pasta, and twice a month, I make home-made Chebe (cassava-flour) pizza.

So far, I'm losing around 4-6 lbs a month. I know it's slow -- but I think it's pretty doggone good, considering that I'm still on all the weight-gain medications and still managing to lose around a pound a week, and sometimes more.

On a -research- end, there has been some research showing that individuals who eat a vegetarian and/or raw-food diet tend to be, generally, less likely to be overweight.

Odd combination. BI will cause the infected cells to fight the virus and to kill themselves. Prednisone stops the immune system from killing the infected cells. Do you have any herpes virus like I do? (You may answer me by cmail.) Or do or did you have rabbits?

That is fabulously good!

Thank you. Perhaps I ought to eat more raw veggies. The problem is that I cannot eat some veggies because they trigger my herpes.

Actually, I may be one of the few humans left on the planet with -no- HSV - or - HPV infection... not even the cold-sore variety. I don't do BI and pred simultaneously -- I do a 2 month cycle of BI, injected every other day, followed by 3 months of Pred... Maybe the course makes more sense from the perspective of an autoimmune disease (which is what my neurologist says that MS is). OTOH, my immune system is royally screwed -- I was born with a 'mis-fire' in my immune system (congenital immune dysfunction), so I'm allergic to life, essentially, and when I get sick, my body destroys my own organs instead of the invading buggies... a single immunization nearly killed me (the 'test' vaccine for smallpox) when I was six... my organs all shut down. So I consider every day a good day since I can still get up in the morning. *chuckles*

Yeah, it took me a LONG time to find a combination that worked for me without going off my treatment -- and for a long time, every time I went back on treatment, I'd lose all the progress I made and then some, and keep trying to drag myself back to at -least- where I started the treatment cycle at... and it kept getting more and more difficult. I chanced on this approach when I lost my neurologist and had to go find a new one, and in the process, found a nutritional neurologist. Some of what he suggested really didn't work for me at -all-, and, frankly, I deteriorated a good bit neurologically under his care... but he did do metabolic typing, and that helped me to figure out something that -did- work.

I have the same issue, because there are some things I just can't swallow or digest because of the MS -- but I do the best I can, and enjoy the things I -can- eat... some things I can't eat -one- way, but I can eat another way... for example... I can't eat raw or steamed broccoli... but I can eat it sauteed with garlic, as long as it is well cooked... and by not cooking it in water, it keeps a good bit of its nutritional value, even though I have to cook it very well. Likewise, I can't eat whole orange -- which is why I allow myself a glass of freshly-pressed orange juice once a week.

I think that the big thing for me also comes from knowing that I'm doing -something-... and I suspect that, even if it doesn't seem like it's doing much, and even when it seems like I'm going backwards, what I am doing is at least helping me not be worse off than I could be if I just said "aw, fergitaboutit" and didn't try at all.

If I may ask: when did the MS present? At what age / in what year? Any correlation with the smallpox test vaccination, or perhaps with a mild disease that you contracted once?

I have a background in immunology, and of course I know about several congenital afflictions of the immune system (forgot most of them, though, but I know where to look them up), but this is the first time I heard the term congenital immune dysfunction - and I think the phrase is extremely vague, as it does not say what the particular dysfunction is.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 6:43:30 AM)

Frankly...... if I were to try and fit in a pair of pants from 15 years ago...... eh..... to much has changed since then.

I've had a second child, went through a major bout of depression that lasted nearly 4 years, have had a chronic illness get symptomatically worse then better then worse then better, and started peri-menopause.  All of that adds up to a very different metabolism than what I had, a much more sedentary lifestyle than I had, different hormonal balance and everything else.  I don't Expect to be able to wear something that I had 15 years ago.

Calla - I've had several immunologists and rhumatologists who said that MS is autoimmune and therefore related to things like the Lupus and Fibro I have, or RA, or a couple of other chronic illnesses!  The prednisone DEFINATELY DOES NOT HELP with the weight issues.  It screws up the metabolic rate somehow - though I don't think they've ever actaully figured out How it does so, exactly - and I don't think I know of Anyone who takes it for any length of time who doesn't suffer from weight gain caused by the prednisone.  I hoped when I went off the prednisone that I would start loosing some of the weight that I gained while Iwas on it (for the Lupus) but instead, that weight is still here, and it's more resistant to diet and exercise to get rid of than it feels like it Should be.

LaTigresse -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 6:53:46 AM)

There is absolutely NO WAY I could fit into my jeans from 15 years ago! But I am closer than I was a year ago.

I eat a healthy balanced diet with the bulk of it being whole and raw. No way am I giving up meat!

subtlebutterfly -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 7:12:31 AM)

I can easily fit mine..thankfully and I do eat meat..if you wanna be a vegetarian then sure whateva floats your boat..but I'll never become one unless the only meat available is full of steroids

me thinks tiger is just as stunning even tho she won't fit'em trousers anymore..who needs trousers anyway[8D]

DarkSteven -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 7:20:00 AM)

DavanKael -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 7:41:53 AM)

My answer to the poll: I don't meet the OPI and I am a veggie.

Now, to the rest of your post:
So when is a person overweight, or even obese?
**Charts are a decent indicator, I'm not a huge fan of bmi unto itself but it along with chart ranges and pragmatism over body type, etc. would strike me as reasonable.
If you're asking my personal opinion on the question above: I know it when I see it.

When you think of yourself as such? Or when other people perceive yourself as such?
**According to the charts, I am at the upper portion of average.
Having been picked on enormously as a child for being chunky, I tend not to give most people a say or sway in such considerations.

Since some people have a completely distorted self perception, it is more objective to side with the opinion of the majority of other people, I contend.
**I contend that there are more options than just that.  Also, as someone who heard from relatives over and over and over again "you don't want to wind up looking like your sisters, do you?", I can absolutely say that the opinions of others are not necessarily healthy, well-delivered, or accurate.

Of course there is such a thing as the BMI, which is also an indicator.
**See above comments on indicators.

I have got another indicator: I think I could loose ten to thirteen kilo's because I do not fit anymore into my fifteen year old pants. I call this indicator the Old Pants Indicator (the OPI), or alternatively Rule's Indicator (the RI).
**Alrighty then.  My result is listed at the top.

I poll in order to know: is there a relation between diet and OPI overweight? In particular I want to know if there is a correlation between vegetarianism or non-vegetarianism and overweight or normal weight or obesity
**As previously stated, I am a vegetarian and I do not meet the OPI.  I am within 10 pounds of what I weighed 15 years ago.  I am within 1 pant size.  The heaviest I have ever been (knock-on-wood) was 15 lbs. heavier than I am now and that was waaaaaaaay too heavy.  I got married at 20 lbs. less than I am now (And I married 9 days after turning 18) and was 20 pounds lighter than that (So, 40 lbs lighter than now) when I met my ex- (I was 15 at that time and had done some very extreme dieting to shut up those folks who were picking on me and for other reasons as well).  Oh, and your vegetarian correlation: I became a vegetarian in middle school.  It didn't affect my weight then and as you can tell from my pic (I am 5 pounds lighter now), I'm pretty hearty, so bein' a veggie doesn't have me wasting away to nothin'.

LaTigresse -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 7:44:39 AM)

For me, there is less a correlation between diet and becoming overweight, as there is forced inactivity with a full time desk job. I eat far healthier now than I did 20 years ago, and far less.

I have to force myself to exercise now whereas the first 35 years of my life, it was just part of my daily activities. It came with the territory.

And never forget the havoc age, and changing hormones, can wreak.

What do rabbits have to do with this? I have a rabbit, is this why I'm fat? And here I thought it's because I eat/ate too much.
