What do rabbits have to do with this?

In scientific MS literature, if I recall correctly, there is a suggestion that MS in some cases may be caused by an erroneous immunological response to a virus carried by rabbits; confer 'molecular mimicry'.

Hmmmm  *looks at belly*  well I do eat meat often and overweight. I have always saw myself as overweight and always will! Hell....I have jeans I can't fit into from 2 years ago  [:o]

Rainfire -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 10:04:21 AM)

My clothes from 2 years ago hang on me now. But it's a mixed blessing. I had to go through a serious cancer scare due to health issues. Now however, this new med for my fibro has me bloating.... I look at food and  I think I'm gaining weight.  [:(]

As for my meat, HELL YES! Carbs hate me, protein loves me. I do best with little carbs and ridiculously high amounts of protein, preferably from red meat. I can drop the weight easiest on that diet, though it's hard to believe.

And yes, I'm overweight. Don't like it but it's my family history, my genetics and as the saying goes "just the way I'm built". All the exercise and dieting in the world still leaves me a big gal.... [:o]

I don't think I have any fifteen year old pants.  Don't the closet-cleaning gurus tell you to get rid of things way sooner than that?  I do have some tops that old that I fit into just fine, though.  Shoes, too, do those count? [;)]

Oh, and I loves me some MEAT.  And spinach mmmmm and green beans and taters, and did I mention CHEEEEESE?  Oh, and cake.

Good question. A colleague of mine was told he needed to loose 20 lbs, and from looking at him i would think his doctor was crazy.

i don't think becoming overweight has as much to do with diet as it does with activity level.  i was thin most of my life, but i was also very active as well when i was thin. i was athletic, i used to run, swim, play tennis, badminton, basketball, and lift weights.  i never really thought much about what i ate and i didn't gain weight, everything just balanced out i suppose.  In my mid mid 20's is when things started to change.  That is when the fibro hit and pain is a real deterrent to physical activity of any kind.  It started with severe foot pain - they diagnosed it as plantar fascitis.  i had to go for weekly shots in my feet and they made custom orthotics for me to wear.  i used to love walking everywhere but now getting up to change the tv channel (yes it was before we had remote control) was a challenge and i would have to endure agonizing pain.  i took anaprox, which helped but i was always with some kind of pain.   10 years later and close to 100 lbs later i was diagnosed with fibro.   i became much more sedentary and depressed, which added SSRI's to the diet.  i tried dieting - i am an all or nothing sort of person and went on the optifast diet - lost it fast, gained it back fast too - twice!!

Now to answer the vegetarian question.  i was a vegetarian for 2 years and i did not loose weight.  i wasn't trying to loose weight i just wanted to eat healthier.  i love meat and cave a nice juicy still mooing steak about once a week.  i also love tofu, beans, Quinoi (a grain that is in itself a complete protein).  Jut recently i have been thinking of going on a diet that incorporates only one meal a day, the rest is liquid in the form of shakes, puddings, and soups.  They delver it and it costs $70.00 a week. i have to by meat and veggies for my one meal.

Self perception is a funny thing.  i think the first time it hit home how overweight i was was when i saw a photo of myself and i asked to the person holding the photo, who is that woman - it was me.  But outside of seeing photos and such i feel like a skinny person trapped in a fat body, if that maked any sense lol.

the rabbits haul our clothes into the laundry room and dry them on extra-high...causing severe shrinkage. Little pricks.

If I may ask: when did the MS present? At what age / in what year? Any correlation with the smallpox test vaccination, or perhaps with a mild disease that you contracted once?

I started developing overt symptoms in 1983 (though I've had some neuro symptoms for most of my life, including tingling fingers and hands/feet that wouldn't maintain their temperature or would 'fall asleep' for no reason), and was diagnosed in 1985 after an MRI after a fall found suspicious plaques on the spinal chord and in the brain , but I didn't have a major flare until 1996 (11 years after diagnosis). From there, things have progressed steadily, though I am still walking and working -- but I do worry about the time when I won't be able to. My new neurologist thinks that it may not actually BE MS in the classic sense, although I have the plaques and the neuro symptoms. He thinks it is secondary to the immune disorder, and that my body is trying to deal with an old chicken-pox infection by doing -this-... some speculative thing about it being a neuro variant of shingles or something like that. To me, it doesn't much matter -- the symptoms are the same, and they don't have any treatment for -either- form that is more effective than what we're doing now... so it all boils down to the same brew for me.

quote:

I have a background in immunology, and of course I know about several congenital afflictions of the immune system (forgot most of them, though, but I know where to look them up), but this is the first time I heard the term congenital immune dysfunction - and I think the phrase is extremely vague, as it does not say what the particular dysfunction is.

The thing is, I was born in 1962 and diagnosed with "congenital immune dysfunction" in 1965... and they didn't -know- what it was. And unfortunately, our understanding of the immune system, overall, hasn't really improved enough to figure it out yet, apparently (at least, according to my ID doctor). The closest speculation is that it is a variant of hyper-IgE syndrome (Job Syndrome), and that I am exceptionally fortunate that it is mild (as the full-blown hIgE is almost always a death sentence by the early 30s-- I've outlasted that by almost 2 decades). Now that I'm as large as I am, I have to go rounds every time I go into the hospital with an infection, because they NEVER read my chart... so we spend 3-4 days testing me for diabetes or diabetic-related illness... and it isn't until the diabetes tests come back normal over and over again (because if it comes back normal once or twice, their speculation is that it was done wrong, so instead of moving on, certain that anyone my size MUST be diabetic, they proceed to just do the same tests AGAIN!) that anyone will actually LISTEN to me and read my chart... at which point they call in the Infectious Disease specialists and the big-gun antibiotics and antiretrovirals and steroids and do their best to undo 3-4 extra days of stupidity. *shakes my head*

Anyway.... back to work!

lizi -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 3:36:03 PM)

I'm technically overweight but have never been in better health. I watch what I eat - not too much meat in my daily diet. I go to the gym 6 days a week, sometimes more than once a day depending on if there is a bike ride impending or not. I'll be doing my third long distance bike ride of the summer next weekend- it's 40 miles. I am also doing my first triathlon next year at the old old age of 48- who would have thought?
I'd like to lose more weight and I'm sure I'll get there but I'm also happy with where I am. I feel great  [:)]

impishlilhellcat -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 4:13:02 PM)

It's ben slow going especially since I slip up and go back to the junk food and pop occasionally. I have major food allergies peanuts, soy, and it appears possible gluten allergy. I don't like to eat meat and until recently I had a really hard time eating fish. Now I try to eat at least one protein with my meal I've moved to all fresh veggies, water as much as possible. I try to eat hard boiled eggs for breakfast and I've managed to drop about two pounds the last two months.

But chicken-pox is shingles is varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpes virus.

IgE is specifically directed at infection by parasites. It also is erroneously activated in astmathic people, causing the astma. Did you have an infection with worms at age three? I do not know that it is congenital in your case. I would first suspect that you had some disease that triggered the IgE response and that it became chronic like in astma patients. I do not think that there is any connection of your hyper-IgE syndrome with your MS.

RobertCloud -> RE: New fat poll! Diet and overweight (8/31/2009 6:51:04 PM)

I have many sizes of Old Pants that I cannot wear anymore. I hit my highest weight about 6 years ago at 475 pounds, since then I have lost 200 pounds and am now at 275. I still have between 75 and 100 pounds to go before I reach my final goal. But I set little goals along the way. My next Goal is 237.5 pounds, then I will have lost as much as I weigh, or weigh 1/2 of my highest weight.
