But how would you answer the poll before and after?

Are you exercizing? Your weight loss is impressive, but I imagine that it also may have effects upon your biophysiology? Do you feel okay?

Overweight is overwhelmingly caused by carbohydrates, and their effect on insulin.

Overweight can have various causes. A sugar rich diet is certainly the most important cause, yes.

My diet is rich in sugar. How long does it take to get off of sugar?

It is not addictive. I usually eat a carton of cookies a day, but I suspect that I do so for the salt in them and wish they would leave out all or most of the sugar.
Some sugar is okay and perhaps a must, I suppose, like once a week a slice of bread with honey. I dunno; I do not am a dietician.

Winterlight, in order to actually cut sugar, you have to cut ALL the foods that break down into sugar, which means pretty much cutting carbs. It can be a hard thing to do, but it changes the way your body handles the hormone leptin and can apparently have some pretty effective results. If this is something your interested in, you can check out Maximizedliving.com they have a 30 day challange thats been effective for a good number of people.

Cutting out all the carb seems rather drastical to me. It is effective - one of my friends in this way lost so much weight that it eventually became scary - but it is not a normal diet.

I do know that my weight gain during the past twenty-five years is caused because I do not have a balanced diet. To make up for what I do not get from my food, I eat more of the same food. I suspect many people put on weight because their diet lacks some ingredient and their body tries to get that ingredient by eating more.

So my diet may have insufficient salt and my body makes up for it by daily having a box of cookies?

In my experience, the thing about meat is: getting enough protein for your body to repair itself and build muscle = good;
eating fatty meats or too much protein of any kind = bad.

When meat is bad for weight loss, it's 'cause fatty meat is the bad kind of fat and because too much meat but not enough fiber will make you constipated, overburdens your liver, makes you overly acidic, and these do not promote weight loss.

If you eat a diet primarily of fruit, vegetables, brown rice, and lean meats, lots of filtered water and a little healthy fats, and make those your staples, you can eat plenty, you can indulge a craving here and there, and if you're overweight, you're going to trim up.

(I'm including fish and fowl in the "meat" category, by the way.)

But so often, people on vegetarian diets are more careful eaters in general, and are getting lots of fiber and less fat, while people who are big meat eaters tend not to bother with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and are eating a high fat diet, in general.

FR, after read thru

My history of being fat: I got chubby at 11. I got down to a near-regular body mass between my first & third babies . . . . & then I put all the too-much mass back on with my third pregnancy & haven't taken much of it off since then . . . . . So. If anything, my pants from 15 years ago are probably too big, cuz I have trimmed down since that particular point . . . . .

I'm an over-eater & a sugar-binger, tho' I'm currently off of both . . . . . (& I strongly disagree that sugar is not addictive, for me it's one of the most addictive substances I've dealt with . . . . . I am a serious sugar-junky & am cold-turkey off of it for most of the last month . . . . .)

& for me, there is a definite deliberate aspect to holding onto the weight -- I feel safer bigger & fatter, I have quite a bit of emotional discomfort around being 'desirable' & 'attractive' . . . . . . (A book (Diets Don't Work, by Bob Schwartz) really helped me understand how my food & eating & weight stuff worked . . . . . . .)

Ah. As to what I eat. Technically I'm supposed to be a vegetarian (as a buddhist) but the 'sinful' nature of meat eating makes it more attractive to me, so I'm a bad girl eating . . . . . (Mostly chicken, pork, & beef . . . .) Other than that, tho', I mostly eat like a veggie-hippie type, lots of fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, seeds, & whole grains . . . . . & I drink tons of water & only occasionally drink anything other than. & when I want a sweet-fluid treat I tend to drink OJ or something similar . . . . . (Mmmmmmmmmm, unpasteurized tangerine juice . . . . . . )

Also, I don't take supplements, & I get intense cravings for things like kale & mushrooms . . . . . I eat kale most days, for instance . . . . . (Mushies are pricey so I don't eat them as much as I'd like . . . .)

This is also what the poll results in a tenuous way appear to indicate. Of course 38 votes is not sufficient to be a significant indicator.
