I think it's basically a non-issue overblown by conservative media sources.

It has been portrayed as taxpayers fully funding ACORN, and indeed that's what has been repeated on these boards numerous times.

But from your link:

"The majority of our funding comes from our membership and from our supporters," spokesman Brian Kettenring said.

"Any attempt to try to limit our access to particular sets of funding is not likely to have much impact on our core operations.

It will hurt the individuals that benefit from that particular project. It's pretty clear this sort of attempt to cut off funding is politically motivated more than sort of driven by a high-minded concern for good governance.

"ACORN's annual budget is $25 million, Kettenring said. Of that, about 10 percent is federal money and a much smaller share comes from state and local governments, he said.

But does ACORN not also get money from other agencies/institutions/organizations that DO get that money from the federal govt in some form or fashion?

It also says that the brother of one of the founders of ACORN embezzled $900,000.....and they did not report it to the police or the govt.....trying to make restitution as reporting it would financially ruin ACORN, so? The law is there, but he and the company are exempt? what kind of crap is that? anyone else would have gone to jail long ago!

I'm not saying that ACORN has not done anything good in all it's years.....BUT at present, seems to be others are trying to distance themselves from ACORN for the issues that are coming out now....and keeping in mind that these are only now coming out to public knowledge, who knows how long these and other "illegal " practices the company is or has used has been going on for however long unnoticed?

The Founder whose brother took the money covered it up until he left...

quote:

Acorn chose to treat the embezzlement of nearly $1 million eight years ago as an internal matter and did not even notify its board. After Points of Light noticed financial irregularities in early June, it took less than a month for management to alert federal prosecutors, although group officials say they have no clear idea yet what the financial impact may be.

A whistle-blower forced Acorn to disclose the embezzlement, which involved the brother of the organization’s founder, Wade Rathke.

The brother, Dale Rathke, embezzled nearly $1 million from Acorn and affiliated charitable organizations in 1999 and 2000, Acorn officials said, but a small group of executives decided to keep the information from almost all of the group’s board members and not to alert law enforcement.

Dale Rathke remained on Acorn’s payroll until a month ago, when disclosure of his theft by foundations and other donors forced the organization to dismiss him.

“We thought it best at the time to protect the organization, as well as to get the funds back into the organization, to deal with it in-house,” said Maude Hurd, president of Acorn. “It was a judgment call at the time, and looking back, people can agree or disagree with it, but we did what we thought was right.”

The amount Dale Rathke embezzled, $948,607.50, was carried as a loan on the books of Citizens Consulting Inc., which provides bookkeeping, accounting and other financial management services to Acorn and many of its affiliated entities.

Wade Rathke said the organization had signed a restitution agreement with his brother in which his family agreed to repay the amount embezzled in exchange for confidentiality.

Wade Rathke stepped down as Acorn’s chief organizer on June 2, the same day his brother left, but he remains chief organizer for Acorn International L.L.C.

He said the decision to keep the matter secret was not made to protect his brother but because word of the embezzlement would have put a “weapon” into the hands of enemies of Acorn, a liberal group that is a frequent target of conservatives who object to its often strident advocacy on behalf of low- and moderate-income families and workers.

I often wonder why we blame a company for the actions of a few of the leaders.

But thats the point he did cover it up still for 8 years, and only letting it come out after a whistle blower made it known, not even letting the board of directors know....and only then leaving the company....when anyone else would have gone to jail. But even still what of all the questionable and illegal activities this company is known for?

And I dont care what he may say, you can not convince me that he did not "hide" it to solely to protect the company, but to protect his brother as well, I dont think anyone would believe that trash!

would it not be obvious that "he" was not the only one that did in fact know of his brothers embezzelment? Someone was the whistle blower, therefore there were others that did in fact know......yet as his brother, did nothing for 8 years? Over $900,000....surely others had to have known as well with that kind of money we are talking about?

But that is only one thing, how many more "instances" of illegal and even shaky activity has there been in all these years? Personally I think it should have been shut down years ago! But, that is only on opinion...mine, lol

I have publically stated this organization needed investigation to determine of the problems are at the bottom or the top.

However, if the case of the embezzelment, the organization was lied too by its members.. and not all of them. if the whole board knew, then you would have a point.

Tazzy, if the whole board did not know, there are even bigger problems afoot. If they are set up in such a way as the board is not fully involved in Financial Decisions, they should not be eligible for one cent of Federal grant $ or contracts. That there would not be oversight of funds in Federal Grant situations seems criminal in itself.

An organization is only as good as those who run it. If the top is bad, does that mean the organization is also? or can the Organization be good while the corrupt get caught?

He was a lawyer in a suit for Acorn, then became an adviser, as far as i know. as i said, it needs to be investigated. i think the organization can do good works, if we get rid of the bad nuts.

If ACORN is such a worthy organization, they should have no problem funding itself from the private sector. It should stand on it's own two feet or go under. PBS should be next in line to be de-funded. Rush Limbaugh gets no Federal funds, why should PBS ?

ACORN didn't accept Federal funds ? Please. If they didn't get money from the Feds, why did Congress just vote to stop giving them money ? They have recieved at a minimun, 53 million dollars of our tax dollars.

Do they not also get federal funds from OTHER agencies that get it from the Govt, then pass it on to them in "private" or corporate donations?

If they are not being funded by our Federal tax dollars, where are they getting the money to run a nationwide organization ?
