WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A poverty-rights group that has drawn the ire of conservatives suffered another setback in Washington on Monday when the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to deny it access to federal housing funds.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which helps poor people fight foreclosures and fix tax problems, has received more than $53 million in U.S. funds since 1994, but conservatives' charges of widespread fraud have begun to impact its reputation in the capital.

Every State in the country has help for those who need help buying a house, or getting afforidable housing. We do not need a criminal enterprise like ACORN to duplicate services and steal our tax dollars.

A lot of people think that ACORN needs to be investigated thoroughly. Many people do not want to see a community action organization that is corrupt, advocating or facilitating criminal activity or advising child sex trafficers. One of these people who has publicly called for this investigation is President Barack Obama.

Well of course he is, NOW......but as said and well known, he himself has represented the organization in the past, and continued as an "advisor" as has been said of years......

Do you think he would not call for an investigation now that so much has come out into the public eye for all to see just what a corrupt organization it really is? How could he not call for one? I mean really, he HAD no choice but to call for an investigation....what would that had said to the country had he not done so?

It is no different than when he turned his back and began to distance himself from his church of, again, MANY (over 20) years....He knew what was being preached of in that church, but when the public caught on when he was running for the Office of The President Of The United States, he turned his back on it and "claimed" he had no knowledge nor idea, yet for over 20 some odd years he had a front row seat.....was a load of lies then, as is now....no difference!

It is an old and tired political trick (unfortunately used by some on both sides of the aisle) that when a politician you don't like does something one disagrees with, shout about how they are doing wrong. When they do something you agree with, twist by claiming a) they should have done it earlier b) painting it in the worst possible light and c) claiming it was only the vigilance of your side of the argument that 'forced them to do it'.

It's the "heads I win, tails you lose" school of political thought.

Considering the huge number of ultra conservatives and/or 'libertarians' on these boards that have defended prostitution as a legitimate and worthy profession, I find the whole indignation over ACORN rather ironic.

I agree with you, FDD. There is no place in this world, much less this country for an organization that in any way facilitates, condones or enables any abuse of UM's in this way. An organization that has anyone doing anything to aid such unforgivable behaviour at any level needs to be examined, purged of this element completly or destroyed. I am hoping that after we do so with ACORN, we can turn our eyes with equal vigilance to the Catholic church.

That would be an interesting investigation... Can the US government set an independant prosecutor against The Church? For example...under what jurisdiction would they claim... its clear, given ACORN's accecptance of federal monies, that we could name one for them... but where does that fall in in an investigation against The Cathlic Church.

Oh,,, BTW,,,

Do we have any evidence Church agents are giving out advice on how to avoid the US tax code or how best to traffick sex slaves?

Or are you fishing???

Yet public school teachers molest Um's far more often than the Catholic Church Spinner....And their uniouns (which do get federal $) defend them.

We could investigate them to see if we are going to continue to give tax free status to an organization who has done such things.

And no, we don't have proof that they gave out advice on how to avoid the US tax code. Nor do we have proof that they gave advice on hot best to traffic sex slaves. What we do have proof of are wide spread instances of molestation of UM's that were covered up by the organization hierarchy who didn't even bother after these acts were discovered to keep the perpetrators away from UM's in the future What we have is an organization who had so many cases of this adjudicated against them in civil court that they dared to complain that paying these judgments would bankrupt them. What we have proof of is that no high ranking member of this organization has been fired because of this situation?

So is it fishing to say that an organization like this should not be given tax free status, which I see very little different from getting government funding? Should they be allowed to continue about their business as if nothing had happened? Should they be allowed to continue to run programs for UM's without any sign that that they have plans to keep it from happening again?

Tell me...why is it that I am equally enraged with ACORN for even speaking to those who claim to be intent on trafficking as I am for any group that seems to be at all involved in any harm to UM and that rage doesn't seem to be shared except to make another damned partisan point. I'll say it for you and for dawg and anyone else who cares to listen. If ACORN or the Catholic Church or the teacher's union are involved in his matter, then, yes, rip them down until there's nothing but rubble and bone.

Oh...and not to accuse anyone of anything but if anyone was to be trying to make political hay out of this subject, then they belong on the same damned pile.

This isn't about pointing out that what someone is doing is worse. This is urging that we all stop looking at the little things like political inconvenience and start showing the rage towards those who in any way participate in the abuse of um's as is appropriate. I don't give a good god damn if it's ACORN, the Catholic Church, The teacher's unions, the sex tourism travel agents, the internet pornographers or any other group in this world. I can't think about any other issue that I would say this about but this is pure right and pure wrong. And anyone who thinks scoring political points, debate points or any other tangential nonsense is ok to distract when this particular issue is raised is making themselves part of the problem.

Except....

You brought up The Catholic Church in a thread where ACORN and ACORN's actions and the Fallout from them were the topic.

You attempted to distance President Obama from the fray by claiming he believes this should be investigated. I pointed out how hollow that statement is by the very fact that Barrak Obama is the President of the United States and he could call for an independant prosecutor any time he wants...though we shouldn't hold our breath...

To that... you then cried Pope.

The same tactics you so often like to point out in others.
