I understand that there are different levels of "outedness" (If that isn't a word, then I hereby claim to have coined it ...YAY Me!!), however, I really can't see anybody who doesn't already know me online randomly searching my screen name (excepting of course Armenian men). Be honest, how often do you think "LuckyAlbatross" gets searched by people who have not read you on here, or wherever else you happen to use that monniker.
A previous post (sorry can't remember who, and am too lazy to go look for it) said to just not post online anything you don't want "just anybody" seeing, and that is good advice.....it is all stored on a server somewhere...and whatever is stored can be accessed. Personally i wish more people would google my screen name...I would get more people visiting my poetry site, and it might just help prevent anotyher poor Armenian girl from having to suffer with such an unflattering name

On the other hand, LuckyAlbatross is a very new and unique name for me. Everywhere else I am known as EmeraldSlave or EmeraldLiz or EmeraldEAD and most everyone knows it. Finding stuff about me really isn't that hard. I'm ok with that (again, I act on the assumption that if it's out there, anyone can get it).

I'm not sure why they thought that this was a closed net space, but it definitely isn't. While I think the risk of someone finding someone specific on here is small, it's certainly not unheard of.

geeze... i put my nic into dogpile.com and my posts showed up, with everyone else's pics and responses..... i, too, thought this was "members only" access.... will certainly slam my brakes on for posts and confirms my initial thoughts of not putting my pic out there!

what are you people smoking? This is the INTERNET, and it's a FREE website. What made you think that you were given any special protections? Did you not read the Terms of Service documentation?

No one in my vanilla life could POSSIBLY pick me out as my profile name here. Is that because I have some uber high security program running with CM? No, it's because I took the personal responsibility to conceal any and all vanilla information from my 'CM' self and chose not to post my picture. My personal privacy and comfort is my responsibility, not a free forum's.

Get with the program people. I can't believe that folks are insensed that you can google search your own CM nick.....

In other news, the Internet turns out to be a gateway for the exchange of information instead of the concealment of information.

Wanna know something cool? Its not hard to pull up IP address and with IP addresses you can actually search out each and everyone of yours phone numbers, real names, and addresses. Taint that just neato? And i dont think you have to know all that much to be able to do that. Granted i know very little, by choice.. bah why do i want to know who ppl are anyhoo, but for some one that knows what they're doing. It wouldnt be hard.

Which is why they have all that OTHER software to "hide" who you are. heh. for me useless. But for all those stalkers and predators out there.. well i'm sure its pretty useful. Thank GOD i'm such a wack job. (grins.. see a method to the madness)

Anyone remember the whole threat as a kid about your "permament" record? If ya screw up it goes down in the permament record? Anyone wonder if there is some sort of official (yet so non official) database out there caching and recording all this stuff to a file about you?

And then again. You also have to remember. That if you EVER want a high goverment office.. well.. then you might want to be concerned. Reporters well they dig well dont they? Isnt that why Colin Powell didnt go for president? He didnt want them digging about his wife?

Isn't that obvious? You should never use your normal email nic for anything you don't want others to find when they google.

Obvious to you and to me and to others.... but not to all. I've had to ask some people if they meant their name to show up in e-mails etc where they have set them with real name, have also had people forward mail from their work e-mail address to their nic and then forwarded on without deleting where it came from. Some don't care but some don't think.

actually not so. i dont watch 24 and i actually dont really watch tv shows. And actually what i say is true. i actually got a trojan once through an IM. Some dweeb stole my ebay account, left his yahoo name.. so we IMed it.. and As Master was opening up his ports, he opened up our ports and sent a trojan through. Lucky though Master knows what he's doing and it was all good.

Want me to show you a few sites?

http://www.dnsstuff.com/

http://centralops.net/co/

http://www.nirsoft.net/

http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm

there's just a couple of links from my newbie archive. God only knows what folks that know what they're doing have

edited to say.. those links took me all of about 30 minutes one day.. no real searching.. just IMAGINE. What some one like my Master has up his sleeve. Arg and simple things like how to get past a windows Admin passworded account. <sigh> Frustrating when ya wants to be sneaky ya know? Simple like things like Disks and CD's that i dont ever get to see, but catch glimpses off. Arg! And eh, i didnt believe it until i saw Master show me after i passwored my computer so he couldnt get on ha! what a dweeb i am.

Heh just googled for my screen name and first place goes straight to my profile. Cool

Someone in California might be pissed though, he uses the same screen name for something. Might worry him (Or her) if they are vanilla. Me? I don't much give a monkeys, but then I have no reason to hide anything

Gotta love dogpile. I use it to catch my student's plagerized papers. lol I'm gratified that I'm still off the grid with my real name. I can't worry about everything. That's really the only one I care about.

Mine too, surprise! Another reason I don't post a photo here and I give my location as a town nearby, not the actual town I live in.

It's not really a surprise, just never considered it before.

On a side note, in case anyone is interested, or not. I was adopted at birth and spent 14 years unsuccessfully searching for my birth mother. On a whim 3 years ago, I googled her name, and up came the website of an organization she belonged to, complete with her pictures, home address, phone number and email address. I emailed her and, fortunately, had a happy ending, as she had always hoped I would find her. We still keep in touch.

Hm...just for the fun of it, I googled wolffeathers.

Got my slaves now dead profile.

Got my ebay profile.

Got an old blog that I didn't remember having till I saw it.

And lots of jpegs.

And lots of other peoples stuff.

This is why I use wolffeathers.

Nevermind that it's one of my nicknames.

Oh, and Riot, your right, the stuff that those of us that know what we're doing is deadly.

It's rather simple to hack into a PC.

This is why you disconnect from the 'net when your not on it.

If you're worried about someone googling your screen name, then just do what I do...use a different name. "SweetEscravo" is what I use for everything kinky online, but I don't use it anywhere else. Because of this, even if someone googles my name or screen name, none of the collarme.com and other stuff is going to show up.

Put in your email address or screen name, and it will not just come up with postings here, but elsewhere in other groups. I have done a search before, and found age old postings in yahoogroups. I just make sure I do not use my real name or put a pic anywhere.

Not far fetched at all. I pissed off someone with some comments in another site, non-sexual place, where I use my real name. This person googled my real name and came upon someone's blog where I was mentioned. Someone from way in my past. The comments in the blog were good things, but when this person visited her blog seeking information about me, she was alerted, and thus alerted me that I was being googled. Now that was my real name, so after reading this topic, I used a few of my screen names on google and discovered one of my screen names, not the one I use here, will lead you to my real name.
