People like symbols.  We like something we can see and feel as a representation of what we think and believe.  Why do we need a flag?

tam, that should have been "IronBear, Sir", my collared wench with a beautiful but very busy mouth. Perhaps you are not currently wearing a collar at the moment and forgot your place? Maybe a collar locked onto you would help you remember?

Not everyone wears a traditional leather choker with rings for attachments. A lot of us wear jewelry that doesn't constrict our breathing, isn't meant to belittle us or demean us or dehumanize us, they are just tangible symbols of the relationship.

But the bottom line here is that they make us feel good when we feel it on us, and they make the dominant feel good when they see it on us.

tam, my lovely. You looked beautiful in my collar at the club last weekend. Your dark sexy hair and those hot silver circle earrings along with the dark leather collar matched to your patent leather fuck me heels made me proud.

So, collars are important to Me if they add to my tam's looks rather than degrade them i.e. rough doggie collars I see from time to time.

The American flag stands for a number of things, one of which is freedom of expression. And yet, when someone attempts to protest something, using the flag, there are those seek to prohibit them. To me, that's placing a higher value on the symbol, rather than the act.

If I ever gave a woman a collar, and if she ever placed a higher value on it, than on the acts that made up our life together, then there would be a serious problem. There's nothing wrong with symbols, but some people get hung up on them.

I want to go down that path further. We wear different shoes for different purposes so along that same line of thought I want different type of collars for tam to suit the occasion; several collars just like shoes.

I want for her dress collars for dress up and stepping out and perhaps a metal or leather functional collar for private or intense club usages. It would get boring to keep the same collar on her (with a respectful nod to those who like to wear the same locked collar for years).

So, no single collar is "The Collar". Is that bad?

Well, I may be dragging this discussion a little off thread. It is "Why are collars important to a slave" rather than why it is important to tam's Dom. I will simply listen from this point on.

Let me return it to the slave's pov then. In a previous relationship my Mistress required a steel collar with a lock. It was not worn in public. The wearing of the collar was important but not as important as the ritual of Her placing it around my neck and LOCKING it. That was a mystical religious statement and experience about our relationship. Delicious. i never got tired of it. Neither did She.

I wear more than one collar. One is for always, another can be added at need.
It is important to me, in part because it is important to him. I like feeling it, he likes seeing it, we both like knowing it is there.
I will have to think about the why of it.

Someone asked me this question today, and I realized I could not give a good answer to that question. The answer I did give, really offered no explanation. I told them that it was kind of like a wedding ring. Then I was asked why a wedding ring was important.  I replied with "its an outward symbol of an internal commitment". The person asked why a symbol was important, if the commitment was already made. That one I didn't have an answer for either.

what do you all think?

it is a reminder of who i am to him. and admittedly a darned fine piece of jewelry around my neck. which brings on a greater sense of pride because he put it there. but i'd still feel just as a connected if it was absent. i think the internal yoke in my head is far greater and is no comparison to any outward symbol i could obtain.

As most have said, a collar is an outward symbol of an inward commitment ... and we wear them because humans seem to be wired to be symbolic creatures. Ancient civilisations are known for their symbols, right back to cave paintings and venus statues. It seems to be an essential part of being human.

For Me, it doesn't always have to be an actual collar around the neck, it's whatever is practical. A collar isn't all that practical in hot climates if you get a sweaty neck you end up with rings of dirty trapped skin. Not very pleasant. As a sub under consideration (and living 24/7 with Master) i wore one for about 6 months and ended up with a rash, it didn't make much difference whether it was leather or solid metal, it didn't turn out well for me. So as Master's sub/slave i wear an identity bracelet that we designed and had made. It's comfortable to wear all the time being of an open-weave design on a sturdy chain and has v[A] ... my identity as His slave ... in the centre of it, like a golden core. Lots of symbolism there! I also collared a sub with an anklet chain AND wore a matching one to symbolise him being shackled to Me. There was lots of symbolism attached as they both had opals that had been mined from a room we stayed in in Coober Pedy, representing coming out of the darkness into the light etc etc! It was also practical for him in his job as it was hidden from view and wouldn't get in the way of his work. In both cases I appreciate the practicality as well as the symbolism imbued into the piece.

I love His collar because it's an outward symbol of the commitment we've made to each other.....it shows the world that I'm taken.....when He's not close by and I miss Him, I always have Him in my heart, but I can also reach up and touch His collar and it gives me the warm fuzzies all over.  Right now, it's a leather collar from the pet store, but eventually we're planning on a silver chain with a tiny little lock on it.  :)  I lovingly saddle soap His collar every week.

My sister asked me why I wear "that stupid collar" around my neck and said I couldn't wear it to my niece's baby shower.  I respectfully sent my regrets that I couldn't go & said "Some people would say 'why do you wear that stupid ring around your finger?'"  She said "Oh."  lmao

I've always hated Wedding Rings, but for collars, I've not only loved them for symbolism, I like them purely for fashion as well. I think both guys and girls look cool in them. Granted a dom/me in a collar would defeat the symbolism, but I still think it looks cool.

But besides looking cool, and symbolism, I like the feel of someone pulling on the collar, or leash attached.

(Never had a Domme, but I've worn one before, where strangers "walked" me for a few mins.)

If it wasn't so socially unacceptable to wear them, I'd wear them w/o having a partner.
But I don't because it's embarrassing, and it's not accepted by people. (Plus I get guys hitting on me like crazy when I wear one <.<;)

wow, damned good question that I can only hazard a guess to. What I know is that Carol was not much of a one for traditional marriage when I met her. She was of the opinion that it was all in the heart and the wedding band couldn't really add to it. She would not agree with that sentiment now. My best guess as to why is that we are, fundamentally, a pack species and so it is important to us to let other people see that which is important to us.
