ORIGINAL: GotSteel That's a good point, the issue with it is that we weren't talking about peacefully drifting off to heaven in ones sleep, we were talking about earthquakes. We were talking about people being violently crushed to death in horrible agony. Causing or not lifting a finger to prevent such suffering doesn't fit any definition of benevolent of which I'm aware. That's a good point too. But thinking further on this, there may be an option your analysis has overlooked. Some people caught in such a maelstrom may turn to God with the prayer that they be taken swiftly, without suffering, and by surrendering their life to his benevolence, die easily, while others, thinking only of survival, struggle in agony against a fate they cannot escape. It's just a thought. One thing at least is clear. If there is such a thing as Divine benevolence, it obviously isn't a given. And really, that shouldn't surprise. A robotic God, programmed to act automatically to spare suffering, doesn't fit any definition of Deity I've ever heard. K.
