That could be the case, I do tend to get a bit "enthusiastic" on this particular subject.

Polanski recieved an Oscar in 2003, so I would say that he still has some favor in Hollywood, MarsBonfire.

Personally I am much stronger now and would love to face my accuser, but I did a LOT of work on getting to her, stopping being a victim in life, making better decisions for myself, and finding my "no." If it doesn't work for your daughter, that is cool, but I have to reccomend a book, called The Courage To Heal, when she is ready to deal with it. Some adults never do.

Hmmmm...where did I say that my daughter is not healed?  She is completely healed, as far as she knows.  What I did say was that she faced her accuser, did what she had to do to stop him from harming others & moved on.  I also said that there would be no good served to make her face him once again now as a middle-aged woman.
she said she wanted the charges dropped as she has moved on with her life.

If charges against him go forward, will she be forced to testify? If she is, it would seem to me this will be the second time she is violated.

Im wondering how he can change his guilty plea now. He pleaded guilty, im assuming he could change his mind. Then wouldnt he have to face all six charges from the original indictment?
then that poor woman really would have to testify again.

Not only as a matter only of law but of right, a 13 year old cannot "consent" to what was done to her.

Hence the illegal sex with a minor and not the rape, I would assume.

never mind... Level beat me to it.

Holly i have no desire to see that now woman go through all that again. i also have no desire to see someone get away with what he did, allowing others to think they could do the same.

tazzygirl -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 11:59:12 AM)

Im still curious to know if the flight itself carries a sentence... is that a crime that is punishable by a jail term?

tough call. If she would have to testify i would hope they drop the original charges and just get him on the flight from justice charge.

AnimusRex -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 12:02:35 PM)

FR to no one in particular-As parents we have a deep seated anxiety about our children's sexuality; molestation inflames that into full fledged irrationality.
Nothing brings out the torch carring mobs like this subject, and most seem eager (a bit too eager) to prove their bona fides by screaming for the gallows.

Just as there are differnt levels of killing, ranging from negligent homicide and manslaughter to first degree murder, there are different levels and types of milestation; there are different levels of punishment applicable to each. I won't lessen the victim's pain here, but equating molestation with murder by calling for both to have the same punishment seems hysterical and irrational.

Level -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 12:14:18 PM)

I'm reading a thread on this over at IMDB, a number of posters are saying that the only thing he can still be charged with is the flight, nothing specifically to do with the girl.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 12:19:35 PM)

Level, I suppose you have a point. So I guess Hollywood loves Polanski after all... the same way the NFL loves Michael Vick. (So is Hollywood a better, or worse place, since it's victims are still alive and kicking, while most of the dogs and other animals that Vick murdered were done in the name of "sport?")

Just askin'...

Following his indictment on various sex charges, Polanski agreed to a plea deal that spared him prison time (he had spent about 45 days in jail during a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation). But when it seemed that a Superior Court judge might not honor the deal--and sentence Polanski to prison--the director fled the country.

Does a Judge have to accept a plea deal?

Not in Michigan.

Level -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 12:34:01 PM)

Okay, now I'm reading that because he was convicted, that the rape charge is still in play.

Wish we could find something definitive on this.

MarsBonfire, I don't know which is "better or worse", both make me very, very sad, and angry.

Sanity -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 4:03:58 PM)

Many bleeding hearts and artists are already rallying to Polanski's defense.

Anger in France and Poland after Polanski arrest

PARIS, Sept 27 (Reuters) - France's political elite rallied to the defence of Roman Polanski on Sunday, calling on Switzerland to free the 76-year-old film director rather than extradite him to the United States. Artists and film makers also urged the release of Polanski, who faces charges of having sex with a girl of 13 in 1977, accusing Switzerland of being overzealous in pursuing the case.

***

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand said he was "stunned" by the news, adding that both he and French President Nicolas Sarkozy wanted to see the acclaimed director returned swiftly to his family.

***

Robert Harris, a British novelist who said he had been working with Polanski for much of the past three years writing two screenplays, expressed outrage over the arrest.

"I am shocked that any man of 76, whether distinguished or not, should have been treated in such a fashion," he said in a statement, adding that Polanski had often visited Switzerland and even had a house in Gstaad.

"It is hard not to believe that this heavy-handed action must be in some way politically motivated," he said.

SO WHAT???

It is also about the thousands of UM's who go through this every year!!!

How can you defend him???

kittinSol -> RE: Polanski Arrested. (9/27/2009 4:57:00 PM)

Since Polanski was arrested in Zurich (Switzerland), I have to wonder whether there isn't some kind of deal going on... because there has been a rather large scandal involving rich American clients of the Union des Banques Suisses quite recently.

Very, very suspect [8|] .

So Polanski fled legal prosecution, fearing his agreement would not be honored... in essence.. he fled jurisdiction to evade jail time. Am i seeing this correctly? Polanski hasnt been convicted for the crimes he committed?

He plead guilty... he fled the sentencing. Yes... that alone is a felony which he can be put in prison for.

Just as an aside: The statement that "Hollywood loves Polanski" is a bit off the mark. In Hollywood, you are only as good as your last picture. Considering Polanski's been out of the country, he really hasn't created a hit film in almost 30 years. If it weren't for the ancient history of his record and an "activist GOP judge"... he most likely would have faded into the dim memory of IMDB long ago... I mean, The last thing he did was a bit part in Rush Hour 3...

Yeah... I guess that Oscar he won five years ago was window dressing

Michael spent 18 months in prison.

He paid his debt.

Now he is back working at his job which is foolball player

Let Polanski make whatever movie he wants after he pays his debt

Michigan:

As I understand the facts, he was charged with rape but plead to a lessor charge and was never sentenced.  He still can be sentenced but if the judge goes outside the plea agreement, he has to be allowed to withdraw his plea.  If he withdraws his plea, the rape charge can come back.
