There is an explanation for this that has gone unmentioned. There are many smokers who feel extremely picked on right now. Let's face it, smokers have become very much second class citizens. Accepting that being a smoker is a stupid thing indeed (and I say this as a smoker), it's a hard addiction to break. Now, in addition to the other harmful effects of this condition, smokers have to deal with a society that seems determined, while not making tobacco illegal, which would help some, if not all, break the addiction (if only by not having it available in every drug store, deli and gas station) to make life as unpleasant for smokers as possible.

While I know that this is an all but impossible request, put aside the fact that smoking is indeed a destructive thing and take a look at it from the smoker's point of view:

1) Cigarettes are now taxed to the point where the taxes are about 3 times the cost of the product
2) There is virtually no indoor public place where smoking is allowed. (a very pleasant thing when it's 2 degrees, snowing and windy)
3) There are efforts being spoken of to ban smoking in the hotel rooms rented by smokers
4) There are plans to start banning smoking in places like parks and beaches and other outside locations.
5) There is a very large group sentiment that smokers don't deserve such things as health care because they are "doing this to themselves" (as if everyone else was living on tofu and jogging to work every day)

Now, I am pretty sure this is going to turn into a "look how bad smoking is" thread, but the point I make is simply this: There are some smokers who feel very picked upon. Hence the bumper sticker.

All very true. On the other hand, as there are far less smokers than non smokers, a lot of the complaints about this can come across as special pleading. I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that smokers don't deserve health care because the problems are self inflicted, and I'm dubious that this attitude is anything like as widespread as it's sometimes made out to be.

So my getting lung cancer from your second hand smoke is a "self-inflicted condition?" Interesting.

I have no problems with smokers. (I actually have a minor attraction to women who smoke) But, I just have to ask, are smokers REALLY happy shucking out $40 bucks a week on cigs? Do they really LOVE how everything in their house smells like a stale ash tray? Do they really enjoy knowing they are carving years off their family's lives?

Hey, I'm all for personal freedom, but as they say, "your freedom to suck burning tobbacco ends where my lungs begin."

I am in no way championing smoking (though my concerns for second hand smoke kind of ends in the great outdoors)...I'm just pointing out, given the level of rage shown when some group gets called a name or feels so like they're not being listened to, the bumper sticker becomes a little more understandable if not condonable.

Spinner, the "Hitler" response has lost any bite. It's become a joke, a punchline to any political statement. If you pull the Hitler out of the bag, then you've tagged yourself a nutjob.

When the fools in the teabagger movement started carrying around posters of Obama with the requisite Charlie Chaplin style moustaches drawn on them (usually in crayon), they pretty much branded that insult as something only an uniformed, socially inept retard would use... Something that a Glenn Beck listener would resort to.

(sigh) It's sad. A perfectly good insult, gutted by the overuse of right wingers.

Maybe we could substiture "Tyra Banks" instead of Hitler? Yeah, that might work... "Glenn Beck is as stupid as Tyra Banks!"

quitting (with occasional slips) was harder for me than losing the ability to run, probably for the rest of my life.

THAT'S the addiction DESIGNED by these fuckers.  20 a day was me being RESILIANT and getting ready to quit.  Happiness was somehow not feeling guilty for smoking 40 B&H fulls in 24 hours, and waking up to a 5 cig and 2 latte with triple espresso shot breakfast.

the cigs are DESIGNED to be like that.

I hate anti smokers that bitch and DON'T HELP, and most sources indicate that their Harpy-ass nagging makes quitting HARDER (every cessation program I went to since the 90's cited nagging partners/family as the WORST thing in quitting, and of course wives and parents HATE hearing that).

But here's my point:

bumper stickers like that are often paid advertizing, like here where the beer companies will pay you to have their logo on your car or Harley.  It's one of the last places the Tobbaco Tapeworms can get their subliminal messages out, especially with Hollywood being lobbied from inside to illegalize even VILLAINS smoking or people in the 30's to the 50's smoking.

So I'd say there is a 20% chance at least this sticker was in some way another Baccy Trick, since they've got so few left.

Sometimes, here in Australia, they wil actually fullfil some of the Government requirements by funding anti-smoking ads.

Ones DESIGNED to be SO BAD they have been studied and results indicate they make people want to smoke MORE.

Oh, "oops" say the Baccy companies.  Yeah right.  SUCH an acident.

Okay, that's enough boring-ass typing style from me on this subject. Sorry to those that wince at my McKean-esque posting mannerisms but I'm switching back to those in about 3 minutes.

Just a quick aside. Take a look what they're doing to smokers in this society. And if you are not slim and trim, be very afraid. Fat people are next and it's already starting.

half of that stuff in your list is already standard protocols here, spinner.  as for fat folks that's begun here too.  arguments over charging extra tax on fat folks to cover their wear and tear on the medical  and to the economy (efficiency issues, days lost to extra sicknesses, etc.).  Same as already lobbied against smokers.  Almost NO hotels have smoking rooms here anymore, generally you have to be ten feet away from the building (any building, for that matter).

Uh, doesn't that mean people have to stand IN THE ROAD to smoke, then?  (which is also illegal)

some Councils here have madeit illegal for anyone to smoke within 30 feet of publicplaygrounds and parks; Mums who can't quit cannot relax with their kids at those parks now.

worse, far worse, is planned.

Australia is not what it used to be.  Funny thing though...

almost all of this stuff began under Johnny Howard, ultra-con, and self-proclaimed dear personal friend of Dubba Dumb-ass.

It's a standard tactic, HPH. Splinter the people who should have common cause. Keep the lower 95% fighting each other and they will never realize that they are fighting over a very small piece of an unfairly divided pie. The same tactics were used, btw, to divide the indentured servants in the southern colonies from the black slaves, causing a systemic racism that still haunts the country today.

Again, let me quote Jay Gould "I can hire half the working class to kill the other half". It still is being used because it still works.

I'm not sure I buy that about fat people being next. Apart from anything else, it'd cost too much to start using cane sugar instead of HFCS in the food, and unhealthy people make the medical insurance companies a lot of money.

It's already started. The airlines are already starting to try to charge overweight people more for airfare. The government is already starting to try to add "fat taxes" to foods high in calories with the stated intention of making them more expensive as a means of fighting obesity (forgetting the fact that it costs more to eat in a healthy manner than to stock up on whatever high calorie crap one can find). The health care debate is already bringing out things like "why should the 'healthy' lifestyle people pay for the fat people who don't care about their health"

This is the same thing they did before they cracked down on smoking. It is coming. Don't fool yourself that it isn't.

As bumper stickers go, it's not as funny as "Stop Tailgating Me Or I'll Flick A Booger On Your Windshield".

But it has it's moment.

Interesting. I have a bumper sticker that was given to me, depicting Hitler returning the stylized "Sieg Heil" salute, with a caption of, "all in favor of gun control, raise your right hand." It's not on my car, for a number of reasons, but I put it on a locking chest that contains items best kept secure.
I don't get it.

As to the OP, well I think slaveluci pretty much nailed it. And I'm with Kirata as well...I think its kind of clever

Is there anything that the airlines aren't trying to charge more airfare for at the moment?

Yes and it's perfect timing considering Obama's legislative agenda closely matches that other guy's historical agenda. The funny thing is i've never heard a conservative compare Obama to hitler. I've only heard it from the ACORN plants at the protest meetings (you can tell the ACORN plants from their body odor) and of course i've heard "hitler" and "bush" in the same sentence from a significant percentage of the now whining liberals a short 12 months ago.
