One person's "invade" is another person's "liberate". For example, how many American invasions were less than honorable during the last world war? Yours is a political judgment, and so was that of the Nobel Committee.

Excuse me?

Would you care to elaborate on this extraordinary statement?

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 4:08:31 PM)

Two points to consider....

quote:

The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations for this year's prize.

and

quote:

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, he said the peace prize should be given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Sweden and Norway were united under the same crown at the time of Nobel's death.

The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change.

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/obama-surprise-nobel-peace-prize-winner/102966-2.html?from=incom

From the same source

quote:

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

quote:

The first African-American to hold his country's highest office, Obama has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January.

...............

While the decision won praise from statesmen like Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev, both former Nobel laureates, it was also attacked, especially in parts of the Arab and Muslim world, as hasty and undeserved.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip and opposes a peace treaty with Israel, said the award was premature at best.

"Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward," said Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri. "Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace. And he has not done anything to ensure justice for the sake of Arab and Muslim causes."

Interesting how this sounds eerily.. familiar.

Has he done nothing... or something? I dont know. Its not my opinion, nor anyone elses beyond the Committee who are chosen to award this Prize. They obviously feel he has taken the right steps.

Orrin Hatch just pointed out how the Nobel Committee only awards their prize to Liberal American politicians, which is true. Al Gore, Jimmy Carter... Bill Clinton is probably overdue.

Perhaps they should have given one to Bush. He made lot's of American soldiers as well as Iraqi soldiers and civillians real peaceful...permanently.

However, we can work on conservative politicians a peace prize....right after we get AA to honor the owners of Smirnoff for promoting sobriety.

I like the way you think.

"It is a bold statement of international support for his vision and commitment to peace and harmony in international relations," Carter said in a statement.

Could someone please translate that for me?
God, that sounds like Bill Clinton "building bridges" or something.
Do intelligent people really believe such pablum?
Cum-bay-ah, and Obama was nominated after being in office for only *11 days!*
Now THAT has to be some kind of record!
Ahhhhh,.....correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to actually *do something* to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?
As they say down in Texas, "all hat and no cattle."
Did they give Roman Polanski an award too?
Now watch, next month Obama will send 40,000 more Troops to Afganistan for a massive killing spree! lol!
I know more people in my personal life who would be deserving of that award for helping out at homeless shelters and various charities.
I hope that the Norwegians don't think that this will influence anyone's thinking in the U.S.
Why don't they just give George Bush a Nobel Peace Prize? It simply doesn't make any sense anymore.

You're observing Americans discussing American politics, and things are different here compared to where you live.

Funny, I could say the same.

And I'm an American living in America.

Sanity -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 4:30:22 PM)

You're claiming that Obama's a Conservative?

To add a little humor/levity:

Earlier today a friend of mine said : Obama is to the Nobel Peace prize what Milli Vanilli is to the Grammy awards.

I've thought about this alot today. I don't know their names, but I know that one of the nominees is a Doctor from the Congo, who founded and runs a clinic/safe haven for women of gang rape and sexual violence. Which of course in that culture is seen as the womans fault and they are ostricized. Another is a woman who fought for and opened a school for young girls in Afghanastan, where the Taliban had enforced no education for girls after the 8th grade. These are people who actually accomplished something, risked their lives, suffered persection and continue to do good and promote peace in the world. Can you imagine what they could accomplish further with the money from the Peace Prize award ? I think that saddens me most.

I don't know what he did to earn it during his first 11 days in office, but it's not my job to make the decision on who receives it. Another cool thing about this year, is that they set a record for the number of folks nominated to receive the award.

He didn't earn it in his first 11 days.  As you pointed out he was one of a record number of nominees.

Whether you believe he deserved it or not, let's not cloud the issue by claiming he was was decided as the winner from the start.

Level -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 4:38:49 PM)

Did they give it to him because he deserved it, or to tell America "don't ever elect another George Bush again!"?

I guess this is the "A" for "effort" huh?

Going to get My feet done by the boi cuz that's more important the lack of debate around a guy getting a pat on the back for something he hasn't done. This is just stupid.

Go to Musicmystery's post in #52 of this thread for a good explanation of how and why the committee made this choice.

If you can find find the time while getting your "feet done".

(just out of curiosity, what does he do to them?)

subrob1967 -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 5:52:53 PM)

Maybe Republicans should stop electing idiots like Bush and Palin and then there wouldn't be a need for a periodic bitch-slapping.

Sanity -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 6:06:43 PM)

Its extremely odd the way Liberals call Bush an idiot and a chimp and then become indignant when Conservatives refuse  to respect or honor Barack Obama.
