what I heard of Obama's acceptance speech even acknowledged that it in no way reflects accomplishments, although he didn't offer to donate it, which I think he should have.

You know, I heard that too... and when he said that he didn't deserve it, I found myself genuinely liking the guy. But when he continued, his voice changed as he explained why he was going to accept it anyway. And I found myself feeling that I had just listened to a man's ego triumph over his humanity. It was a let down.

But, so be it... bring on whatever's next.

Liberals tend to pat Liberals on the back like this so no, I won't be surprised when the Liberals on the Nobel Committee fail to give W an attaboy for freeing all those millions and millions in Iraq and Afghanistan. They would much rather give it to a fellow Liberal who has done nothing, but this isn't a recent development, why should anyone be surprised.

And that is what I'm trying to tell you.

Don't be surprised when they don't win Peace Prizes.

Like I said, they'll never award it to a Conservative, no matter what he or she does. It's okay of course, its their prize and they can do however they please. It would be nice if they called it the Liberal Political Prize, and acknowledge their leanings.

But at least they're establishing that it is utterly meaningless, which is good.

maybe if you ask them nicely they will give shrub the boobie prize????

How is Obama not a conservative, pray tell? Its not like America's shifted massively to the left since January, is it?

Sanity -> RE: Obama wins Nobel Prize (10/9/2009 9:50:35 AM)

You're observing Americans discussing American politics, and things are different here compared to where you live.

Indeed. I had no idea that it was possible for somebody to be a Nazi and a Marxist simultaneously, to pick one example of the current American debate.
So what has Obama done that demonstrates his liberal/lefty principles, then? Closed down Gitmo? Withdrawn from Iraq? Repealed the Patriot Act?

Actually 3, maybe 4 depending on how you classify Elihu Root, US conservative politicians have won the prize, which considering that the prize has only been given to 97 people over the course of 108 years isn't too bad. As a matter of fact only 7 US politicians that you would call liberal have won, and of those Marhsall and Hull are included only to forestall any arguments about the matter both were centrists and richly deserving of the Nobel prize.

No but I hear he uses the term 'future' a lot.

So did Arthur C Clarke. Where's his Nobel?

Frankly I’m shocked. I was sure that our bretheren on the right would be at least happy about an American receiving this commendation. I thought that they would say “While I may disagree with many of his policies I am glad, as an American, to see our president honored.”

Why? It's completely meaningless.  He did absolutely nothing to earn it, so why should anyone be happy it was awarded to him? It's like being proud of someone for winning the lottery. All he did was walk into the room, and they threw it at him as a door prize. I'm about as far to  the left as you can get on most issues, an I'm not happy about it. It's a joke.

Yes, but it doesn't make the right look bad if we admit that a lot of people on the left think its meaningless. It's much better to talk about those guys on the right than just debate the issue without dragging parties into it.

I believe there are laws governing gifts, amounts, and reporting those. I don't know the specifics or what would apply.

I'm sure his armies of foes will get right on that, though!

Nice to see you, Thadius.

My friend, it is great to see you as well.

Depending on where our currency is in Dec. the award comes out to around $1.2 million. Yes the anti-Obama folks will be jumping on this one, and probably already are (I am not sure when Rush or Beck come on the air). I personally do like the man, but he is my president. So kudos to him for receiving the award. I don't know what he did to earn it during his first 11 days in office, but it's not my job to make the decision on who receives it. Another cool thing about this year, is that they set a record for the number of folks nominated to receive the award.

As always I wish you the best,
Thadius

Wilson won it while in office, so they can start there.

According to the Nobel folks, they are recognizing his commitment to get people talking again, especially about nuclear arms.

I have a slightly different take. By accepting it and moving on, it's a minor story, one which he himself has said he didn't earn but is honored by. By rejecting it, he opens up a whole can of worms and it becomes a huge story. I like the likening of it to lottery winnings. It's not something earned, but it's nice to get and there really isn't any need to give it back.

I wonder if anyone has ever turned down a Nobel prize before.

Two laureates voluntarily declined the Nobel Prize :

Jean-Paul Sartre, who was awarded the Literature Nobel Prize in 1964
Lê Đức Thọ, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

Adolf Hitler constrained three laureates not to accept the Nobel Prize; however, they were given their prizes after the Second World War :

Richard Kuhn, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1938
Adolf Butenandt, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939
Gerhard Domagk, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1939

The Soviet Union government also constrained Boris Pasternak not to accept his Nobel Prize in Literature in 1958.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. But fortunately, to paraphrase John Travolta in "Michael" - I'm not that kinda liberal.

At any rate, this is an empty, meaningless "award." Like I said earlier, nothing but a door prize. I can't imagine any reason anyone would be excited or significantly proud that he won this. A complete non-issue, in my opinion.

And probably not an entirely welcome story while on the cusp of decisions about Afghanistan.

Afternoon,

There has been one winner that has turned down the prize. Here is a snip from the www.nobelprize.org:

quote:

One Peace Laureate has Declined the Nobel Peace Prize
The Vietnamese politician Le Duc Tho, awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, is the only person who has declined the Nobel Peace Prize. They were both awarded the Prize for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord. Le Doc Tho said that he was not in a position to accept the Prize, citing the situation in Vietnam as his reason.

The Vietnam Conflict (1959-1975), was fought between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the United States-supported Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The Southern and American forces were defeated and the war ended with unification of Vietnam under the communist government of the North.

Read the Presentation Speech by the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee on the day of the award, 10 December, 1973 »

Hope that helps...
