I saw your post rml but felt that what I wrote was already perfectly clear, and that further elaboration on my part wouldn't help you understand my point any better.

Well, you have a fair point there, I don't see how those two could possibly feel cheapened.
quote:

You mean Jimmy Carter and Al Gore too?

Or did they cheapen it also?

Do you think Lech Walesa felt cheapened?

Because according to accepted Republican mythology it was actually Uncle Ronnie that ended the Cold War and old Lech had nothing to do with it.

Lech Walesa's response..
"Who, Obama? So fast? Too fast - he hasn't had the time to do anything yet," Walesa told reporters in Warsaw.
"For the time being Obama's just making proposals. But sometimes the Nobel committee awards the prize to encourage responsible action," said Walesa.(underlined by me)
For my opinion of the fairy tale that Reagan ended the cold war see post 96.

OSLO — The Norwegian Nobel Committee says U.S. President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Well isn't that nice.  Good for him.

I'm still a little confused by the right's position:

Are we to not care, because:
A) the award doesn't mean anything...

Or be upset that:
B) Obama didn't really "do" anything to earn this prestigious award...

Or should we instead:
C) Demand that the prize money instead of being donated to a worthy charity,  be given to a rabble of armed yahoos with racist signs?

Or should we just:
D) Hate America, as the GOP obviously does, as we've seen when they rejoiced over Chicago losing the Olympics... and now, acting with contempt when an American President is awarded one of the most prestigious humanitarian awards known in modern civilization?

Please clarify, less than 20% of the modern voting populace?

Perhaps that is because we don't march in lockstep on position?  Sorry if that messes up your worldview where you get to just label and dismiss (and HATE!!!) everyone who doesn't agree with you, but shit happens.

Please clarify....

Aside from the "in reply to" I'm not sure if you're responding to me or not, Mars. The only concern that I expressed isn't even on your list, namely, that I just don't think it's going to prove productive (see here).

Could someone in here tell me what President Obama *actually did* to get the Nobel Peace Prize?

Heretic, Nah... I think it's more a case of this was so unexpected, the various GOP sources weren't able to coordinate and disseminate their talking points fast enough for you all to get YOUR (alleged) opinions from them. Thus, the confusion and conflicting messages.

I imagine in a day or two, you'll all hear the arguments and catch phrases that you are to adhere to, and then you'll be your usual charming, lockstep selves.

He just "IS" Popeye.  That seems to be the measure this year.  Or maybe they just wanted to give the USA another medal.  I understand we got several of the awards this year

USA!  USA!  USA!

I guess facilitating the Middle East peace treaty between the Israelis and the Egyptians wasn't a big enough deal for Carter to be recognized as a peace maker. Old folk tales about their hillbilly style feud and some guy Moses just make it pointless. They were best buds forever and all, so the peace treaty there meant nothing and thus making Carter's Nobel Peace Prize just another political pat on the back.

Please enjoy the sarcasm...the pedicure went well. And now comes the smoother contest training-o-thon. Date night rocks.

Orrin Hatch just pointed out how the Nobel Committee only awards their prize to Liberal American politicians, which is true.

Henry Kissinger was a liberal?

I think he was referring to recent history, as was I, but regardless - things were different at the time Kissinger got the prize. Democrats got us into wars while Republicans ended them...

But if they're going to step so far outside the parameters of their own criteria to award the prize on such tenuous and illusory grounds, one of the results is going to be that I'm going to have a much harder time taking their selection process  - and, therefore, the award - seriously in the future. Which is a shame, because I think this represents the abandonment, the cheapening, of a rather lofty and noble principle.

And I see your point too, Panda. I'd argue, though, that abandoning that principle goes back to at least Henry Kissinger in 1973 (who won jointly with the Vietnamese leader who declined the Prize).

Yes, there certainly have been a few bumps in the road over the years, haven't there?

I really suspect it's more an award to the stance...Obama happened to be standing there taking that stance at the time.

Yes, I suppose that's probably as close to the heart of it as anything. I still think that given the truly courageous work many of the other nominees did, it's very sad that the committee chose to use the award in this manner, but what's done is done. Now all that's left to do is hope that over the next 3 years or so, he manages to live up to it. They've set him a rather elevated standard, haven't they?

I lost respect for the organization when they gave the prize to Yassar Afaffat. That a man who spent years advocating genocide could win the prize was something that pretty much told me where they stood.

Good point. I imagine today isn't the first time ol' Alfred's done some oscillatin' in his grave!

This far "right" household is happy he won. Congrats. Regardless of how we feels about his politics or policies, the man has much to be proud of.
