Could someone in here tell me what President Obama *actually did* to get the Nobel Peace Prize?

He just "IS" Popeye.  That seems to be the measure this year.  Or maybe they just wanted to give the USA another medal.  I understand we got several of the awards this year

Ah, yes. The Noble Liberal, and "Peace in our time".

Aw, Sanity, I love ya, man. Bringing up Neville Chamberlain, waving that piece of paper, the very personification of appeasement to this day.

One little thing, though. In 1930 Chamberlain, elected as a Conservative MP, became Chairman of the Conservative Party. During this period, he founded and became the first head of the Conservative Research Department. He went on to serve as the Conservative Minister of Health, and became Prime Minister on 28 May 1937, and leader of the Conservative Party a few days later. The next year, he sold out the Czechs to appease Hitler.

And so came the largest, deadliest war ever fought. But they probably didn't give him the Nobel Prize because he was....wait, what was it?

Its not an embarrassment for me, its an embarrassment for Obama, and for the Nobel Committee.

I doubt its embarrassing for Obama at all.  Nor do I think the Nobel Committee is embarrassed, either.  It's just your words...your thoughts...which (for me, anyway) makes me want to argue the other way, just for a devils advocate thing (whether or not I believe it or not).  You have such a way about you, Sanity.  I try to believe you couldn't possibly, really, actually believe the things you write.

Chewsie, thank you. It is really a good thing to see someone who doesn't let their disagreement with a political leader's policies turn into such a blind nay-saying that everything that happens that even touches on them becomes a horror. It is an example that both sides of the aisle around here should study and learn from, and yes, I include myself in those who can take a lesson well learned from it.

Again, thank you.

I'm still a little confused by the right's position:

Well there are enough on the left that hold the same position, why don't you ask one of them to explain it to you?

Shhhhhhhhhhh McBride, England is socialist country didn't you know???..... so a Conservative to the UK population is a liberal in the US, hence the discombobulation of Obama being considered a Conservative in the UK and a marxist communist mooozlem to some of the "right" in the US.

I heard that Obama was also nominated for the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. "He's just got chemistry!" said the Nobel committee. *wink*

Ooohh! Was that a Sara Palin-style wink?

Democrats: run people for office who win Nobel Prizes.

Republicans: run people for office that can wink and do "facy pagent walkin'."

I agree that Palin had her chance and blew it since she wasn't thoroughly prepared by her handlers for the Katy Couric interview, but to argue that Democrats select candidates who win nobel peace prizes is just proof of how asleep you really are.

The people who issue the nobel peace prize are foreigners who obviously put their interest above everyone else's including ours. When they select a democrat for the prize as they have selected Al Gore, and Jimmy Carter in the past, it proves that they see that person as someone who puts Americans second. Obviously, grandiose talk of world peace, and ending religious conflict appeals to them, but that is not reality. The reality is that terrorists and insurgents only get stronger if you negotiate with them or capitulate.

Another reality is that fundamentalists Christians won't cut your head off if you don't believe the way they do, but radical Isalamist and the taliban will. We are already seeing indications that this administration is going to abandon taking on the taliban, and focus on Al Qaeda. You are about to witness one of the biggest mistakes in history. Once the taliban is allowed to regain control of their country they will expand their influence into Pakistan. It's very possible that in the future the taliban will be in control of nuclear weapons.

Being a nominee means little.  Getting the prize is something else altogether.

Back on topic, the Prize has been oddly awarded before.  Kissinger won it once, and the Vietnam war had his fingerprints all over it.  Gore won it once, and the relationship between global warming and peace is tenuous to nonexistent.

I hope that Obama does deserve the Prize some day.  But he hasn't earned it yet.  He either got it for good intentions, or for simply not being Bush.

Being nominated may indeed mean little, but it is interesting that Der Fuehrer was nominated at all, especially in 1939. Maybe he was nominated because he hadn't started the war yet? Luckilly the rules were amended in 1974 to prohibit posthumous winners or he still might have a shot at it.

Being nominated means nothing. Any elected government official can nominate someone. Which was the case with Hitler.

They keep nomination information secret for 50 years but I'm more than willing to bet that in 2054 or so it will come out that Bush, Cheney, Idi Amin and Saddam were all nominated.

That depends which post you mean, because if it was this one it is not clear at all and requires a great deal of further elaboration:

One person's "invade" is another person's "liberate". For example, how many American invasions were less than honorable during the last world war? Yours is a political judgment, and so was that of the Nobel Committee.

A quick explanation as to the process of nomination. Seems someone thought Obama made a good candidate back then.
