Its creepy.

I have to admit I doubt we'll ever see a "Frost versus Obama".

I know the feeling. It was excruciating when Fox & Co. were calling people "unamerican" for not supporting their puppet-in-chief.

Hillwilliam -> RE: White House advisers say Fox News is not news (10/19/2009 7:33:16 AM)

Let's see if I have this straight.  The left doesnt like Fox "news" and the right doesnt like CNN "news"  Um last I heard, this has been going on for years.

has anyone ever found any televised news that does *not* have a slant of some sort?   every program seems to have a side of the fence they prefer...

Right. Except that apparently, it's not okay to point out the (very blatant, totally shameless, absolutely whoreish) bias at Fox.

It's fine to demolish the entire media, and to whine and fret over its supposed 'libewal bias', but it's not fine to say anyfink against Fox.

Fox is sacrosanct, and you'd be a fool and a communist to say anything against it [8D] .

White House advisers say Fox News is not news

When you can't dispute the results - dispute the manner in which they are delivered. Hopefully the resulting patrician wars will distract enough people from the pragmatic facts which can't be disputed regardless of the how any source spins or rationalizes them, positively or negatively.

Economy, unemployment, weakening dollar, 'bailed out' auto manufactures closing factories, escalating hostilities resulting in more death in Afghanistan, disconnect from the campaign rhetoric to post election accomplishments; if Fox didn't exist these facts would be differently reported? The 'Ministry of Truth' department of the White House may not like it reported in the manner its been represented here through Fox, but they don't produce the unemployment figures, the monetary exchange rate, the war death toll, or any of this Administration's accomplishments to date. They didn't have a vote in the Nobel Prize.

A rhetoric focused campaign seems to paying too much attention to opposition rhetoric. The 'official' White House protest gives legitimacy to the rhetoric; especially for any on the fence concerning the Nobel Laureate elect's ability to accomplish anything. FOX, CNN, MSNBC; the talking heads seek an audience of head-bobbers. Being emotionally involved regarding a news source is counter productive, especially by a President's own people. Some still on the fence who voted for this Administration, and really want to believe could see this a Shakespearian "the lady doth protest too much" moment.

Perhaps the Laureate needs to focus on changing what can be reported and not the reporting source. Then again, considering this move, maybe the hope is to just get more people not to care.

A retort from Fox News:

quote:

The White House stopped providing guests to 'Fox News Sunday' after Wallace fact-checked controversial assertions made by Tammy Duckworth, assistant secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, in August. Dunn said fact-checking an administration official was "something I've never seen a Sunday show do."

"She criticized 'FOX News Sunday' last week for fact-checking -- fact-checking -- an administration official," Wallace said Sunday. "They didn't say that our fact-checking was wrong. They just said that we had dared to fact-check."

"Let's fact-check Anita Dunn, because last Sunday she said that Fox ignores Republican scandals, and she specifically mentioned the scandal involving Nevada senator John Ensign," Wallace added. "A number of Fox News shows have run stories about Senator Ensign. Anita Dunn's facts were just plain wrong."

Fox News senior vice president Michael Clemente said: "Surprisingly, the White House continues to declare war on a news organization instead of focusing on the critical issues that Americans are concerned about like jobs, health care and two wars. The door remains open and we welcome a discussion about the facts behind the issues."

Observers on both sides of the political aisle questioned the White House's decision to continue waging war on a news organization, saying the move carried significant political risks.

Democratic strategist Donna Brazile said on CNN: "I don't always agree with the White House. And on this one here I would disagree."

David Gergen, who has worked for Democratic and Republican presidents, said: "I totally agree with Donna Brazile." Gergen added that White House officials have "gotten themselves into a fight they don't necessarily want to be in. I don't think it's in their best interest."

"The faster they can get this behind them, the more they can treat Fox like one other organization, the easier they can get back to governing, and then put some people out on Fox," Gergen said on CNN. "I mean, for goodness sakes -- you know, you engage in the debate.

What Americans want is a robust competition of ideas, and they ought to be willing to go out there and mix it up with some strong conservatives on Fox, just as there are strong conservatives on CNN like Bill Bennett."

Bennett expressed outrage that Dunn told an audience of high school students this year that Mao Tse-tung, the founder of communist China, was one of "my favorite political philosophers."

"Having the spokesman do this, attack Fox, who says that Mao Zedong is one of the most influential figures in her life, was not…a small thing; it's a big thing," Bennett said on CNN. "When she stands up, in a speech to high school kids, says she's deeply influenced by Mao Zedong, that -- I mean, that is crazy."

OrionTheWolf -> RE: White House advisers say Fox News is not news (10/19/2009 9:42:37 AM)

None of them are news outlets, they all offer commentary and or spin it a certain way.

I would never recommend that any admin try to ban or isolate a news company, because it is better to show good retort to opposition than to try and sweep it away.

Fox does really suck though, and I no longer even watch Glen Beck. All those mouth pieces are looking for is power in a different medium. Not much better than any of the politicians they denounce or support. What is worse is that this huge game has drawn in the majority of the American people, and most will not realize it is a game until the lights go out, and the people have lost.

Wow, Sanity....a posting from Fox News talking about how badly Fox News was treated by the administration. That's really a smoking gun. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

GraciousLady -> RE: White House advisers say Fox News is not news (10/19/2009 10:43:05 AM)

No matter what your views are. No matter what political party you belong to. No matter if your left, right, moderate, independent or some other group consisting of only 3 people. In this country you have a right to your views and can express them without fear of prosecution. I have said it before and I'll keep saying it:

IF ONE OF US CAN'T SAY WHAT WE FEEL WE ARE ALL IN DANGER OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK.

IMO, the news media can keep saying whatever they are saying as long as it is not outright slander.

It is also my opinion the present news media is not unbiased as they should be.

I agree with you entirely, Gracious Lady. If Obama or any government entity was trying to shut down Fox News, or in any way hinder free speech, I would be on the front lines fighting it. I support Fox News' right to spout whatever they want to spout. I also support the administration's right to say that they feel that it is nonsense. I support it the same way I supported a past vice president when he critisized a tv character for getting pregnant out of wedlock. Free speech goes both ways, as it should.

We saw the White House spin, whats wrong with reading the Fox News side of the story?

Oh yeah - only the official White House propaganda is allowed on the streets these days.

Silly me, how could I have forgotten that.

Carry on, Spinner.

If you don't get thrills up your legs whenever Obama reads a speech off one of  his teleprompters, you're not a real news outlet. [;)]

Ohhhhh...you were putting that up there as an example of the Fox spin. I'm sorry. My mistake. For a moment I thought you actually expected people to take it seriously. Sorry.

Do you take this stated position coming from the White House seriously? Based upon her comments the White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, doesn't like the fact that any media outlet, FOX included, can put out stories without the control they enjoyed during the Presidential campaign.
"Very rarely did we communicate through the press anything that we didn't absolutely control," said Dunn. "One of the reasons we did so many of the David Plouffe videos was not just for our supporters, but also because it was a way for us to get our message out without having to actually talk to reporters," said Dunn, referring to Plouffe, who was Obama's chief campaign manager. Dunn has been facing some criticism since she led a White House campaign last week against Fox News, slamming the top-rated network as an "arm of the Republican Party" and "opinion journalism masquerading as news."

If you don't trust the quote source - watch the video link.

There is a huge disconnect concerning the campaign and reality of elected office. Rhetoric works for campaigning, measured quantitative results take center stage once in office. "Things are getting better" rings hollow to people experiencing things getting worse every day. Unfortunately for the Administration, they can't take a previous, and universally used tactic of even blaming 'Congress', or the obstructionist minority who prevents anything from being done. The minority can't even stall any proposed action by filibuster. Understandable that the White House would try to keep their rhetoric from being challenged by any media group. The usual suspects to blame are impotent - shoot the messenger!

FOX obviously provides a big, visual target. It is interesting to observe much of the general public isn't buying the White House position. That position is unsubstantiated from any source other than those I've spoken to first hand; some very much still hoping for the 'CHANGE!' he was promised. But look around the threads? There's no issue being discussed, only how the 'media' is covering it? The economy, wars, unemployment, falling confidence in the US Dollar, and the lack of private investment; isn't something those that back the Administration want to discuss.

How funny to see 'talking heads', motivated by nothing more than personal or corporate profits, blamed for even a minor contribution to why things are so bad! Amazingly some people really believe that.

"Believer(s) of god are a plague to this world" - Indeed!

The question of whether the whitehouse attmepts to manage the media (the answer is yes and has been since the first reporter asked a member of the white house staff a question) and whether Fox News is worth the electrons it takes to beam it to your tv (in my opinion the answer is no) are not an either or proposition. The president and his people can try to manage the media AND Fox news can be the television equivilant of the New York Post.

Why do you see that as a contradictory set of ideas?
