A question:
Ken Livingstone was (notoriously) a lot further to the left* than Tony Blair or his entourage of spin Doctors when they began revamping the labour party as something that leaned to the right side of centrism. He was eventually, expelled from the party to stand in the London Mayoral elections as an independent, then brought back in after he won.
Which of these gents, then, is the traitor? Only one of them warped their party into something at odds with its supposed function, and then started throwing out people who wouldn't tow the new party line. It's hardly the Militant Tendency (RIP), we're talking about.

The point I'm probably failing to make here is that outside of the legal definitions, treachery and treason are purely subjective. They have no basis in objective reality, and are interpreted very willfully indeed by most people who are in any position to kick up a stink about them.

*(so, to be fair, is the whole of the Liberal Democrats and probably the SNP as well)

No, you made your point quite clearly. The point you may be missing is that DK constantly plays these kinds of games when he is trying to defend an untenable position, which also hijacks the discussion from a topic uncomfortable for liberals into a semantic game.

HOUSTON, May 11 — Rudolph W. Giuliani directly challenged Republican orthodoxy on Friday, asserting that his support for abortion rights, gun control and gay rights should not disqualify him from winning the party’s presidential nomination.

Rudolph W. Giuliani: In His Own Words (May 12, 2007) He said that Republicans needed to be tolerant of dissenting views on those issues if they wanted to retain the White House.

Even the republican party members say they are not tolerant.

The GOP needs to live the planks of its platform, not just offer lip service.

SARAH PALIN, interview, Newsmax, Aug. 29, 2008

A gathering of Democrats is more sweaty, disorderly, offhand, and rowdy than a gathering of Republicans; it is also likely to be more cheerful, imaginative, tolerant of dissent, and skillful at the game of give-and-take. A gathering of Republicans is more respectable, sober, purposeful, and businesslike than a gathering of Democrats; it is also likely to be more self-righteous, pompous, cut-and-dried, and just plain boring.

I'm not sure that Palin's even as creditable a spokesman for them as Limbaugh, frankly. About the only attempt she seems to have made to "live the planks of [The Repubiclans'] platform" that anyone can point involved refusing her daughter an abortion and bringing her own kid with Downs' syndrome to term.

LOL... i added that for comic relief.

But, in all honesty, the party cant even agree on the issue of them being tolerant or not.

Lol, a campaign speech where he is trying to get beyond some issues that differ from the mainstream (though far from all) of the GOP. If you take campaign speeches as gospel, health care reform legislation would be developed by a coalition of health care experts and televised.

Oh, by the way-
I just read Erick Erickson's blog over at RedState, on this very article. The title of his post, directed at the moderates?

You bolded the wrong part of the definition. I fixed it for you.

I'm bored by wilbur and your attempts at making me the subject rather than the subject at hand, which is that wilbur asked for proof of something and when presented with that proof decided to hand wave it away rather than admiting it that the proof had been presented. So back on the subject the tea party conservatives do try and keep others from being heard and do engage in character assassination.

Dems and Repubs should get together and find some "common ground", things they can agree on and work from there.
It really does get tedious listening to you two groups sniping at each other. Plus, you don't get anything done!
There are more people registered as "Independant" or "Unenrolled" than Dems or Repubs combined.
And they need to start actually *listening* to their base! If people want pot legalized, legalize it etc. It's *supposed* to be all about what The People want not what rich lobbyists and corporations want!

That's wonderful Popeye and I agree with you.

Now tell me some practical solutions to get it accomplished.

Because what I find interesting here is the "Independents", who invariably are conservative lately, always sit on the sidelines pretending moral superiority and complaining about both parties without offering anything.

One thing I have noticed since the Republicans lost the last election is that there's a lot of people who are obviously at the hard right edge of the conservative spectrum describing themselves as independents, despite the fact that they spent most of the last four years bigging up Bush. I don't think that's a very convincing argument coming from somebody whose obviously marching in lockstep with the madder wing of the Republican party, to be honest.

It can happen, is (I'm told and can well believe) extremely painful, and in the worst cases can require surgery to correct.

Even radio talk show host Neal Boortz has said this. He has said:

1) The Republicans had control of Congress and never did anything they said they would.

2) They are too intolerant if another Republican differs from the party platform on just 1 thing.

3) The religious right will run the Republican party into oblivion with their "crusades".

Hell, now with they way many people are applying the word conservative, I need to start calling myself a constitutionalist or something else.

Now you're talking...

Maybe we need a strong third party. Although try something like that, along with mustering some credible results and I'd almost bet you could get the Donkeys and the Elephants to combine their efforts for the destruction of that. They seem rather protective of the little politburo of corruption.

Parties evolve, so railing against what "the Republicans" did yesteryear makes about as much sense as praising todays uber left Democrats for the comparatively Conservative agenda of JFK.
