Oh And I second the Victoria's secret rant! DON"T GO THERE unless you have a very common bra size. I didn't wear a bra for a long time because I am really small. I went to VS to find out my bra size after a slight weight gain made me decide I needed a little support. They measured me and told me I was 30 B but insisted that that size doesn't exist. Not that it is hard to find, or that it needs to be custom made but that it DOESN'T EXIST (hello! just because your company doesn't make the size doesn't mean its not a size) They said either I should buy an ill fitting 32 A or I could only wear training bras. They said "try gap kids" and giggled. Since then I have found 32 B's that fit with adjustable clips in the back. The VS sales girls didn't even suggest I try 32 B! I guess tiny girls have to be A cups according to those bitc#e$.

Avoid VS.  Check.

I'm reasonably certain that her bras don't fit correctly.

Since you're the one with the hellacious experience, what should we look for with a saleswoman that's doing her job right?

I know that the cup size is a ratio, the difference between the over and under of the bust.

But I've also known very differently-endowed women who wore DD cups.

There should be no overflow, and not a lot of space, right?  (forgive the obvious ignorance)

While this is probably going to sound discouraging... I have yet to have a good experience with a bra saleswoman. No offense to anyone out there, I'm sure they exist but I haven't found them. What are you looking for is something comfortable (pain is not ok!), with no quad-boob so that the overall affect is smooth and you can't see where the bra begins and ends through the shirt. If the underwire presses into her side it's a no go - that will get more uncomfortable as the day goes by and might break and stab her once it gets worn out. Broken underwires are not fun!

It's... kinda like trying to find a container to cradle eggs in all day. Something that won't let them bounce around! I suggest trying on a LOT of styles of bras before buying one so that she can get a feel for what feels supportive and comfortable for her.

I can say with little irony and total confidence that my girl's bra size is not going to be terribly common.

And thank you, Aquatic.

She was just complaining about underwire, and I had to google that up.  Doesn't seem comfortable if it's digging in.  But if it's digging in, then it seems that the size should be a little bigger?

Trying many on does seems like the appropriate path--though I confess I was hoping for some magic "Oh, we have 300 of her exact and comfy and perfect size! On triple clearance, too!"

Is there someplace a grown woman can go to learn how to be girly?

personal shopping services are available through several upscale stores free of charge. i'm aware that nordstrom, bloomingdales, saks, and neiman marcus offer the service. call your local store in advance and make arrangements. they will take you through each department. foundations usually has a very good person that can help with fittings. she's normally going to be older. she will make good suggestions. bring a pen and pad and jot down the vendor names. you may be able to find some of the items elsewhere for much less. definitely add in some shapewear to round things out.

in regard to general femininity you can investigate having her take an etiquette course. these were staples of the modeling schools years ago, but some places still offer them. the time frame varies but you will have to check around. i found one for my daughter that was a year long. sometimes i see them offered by community colleges as well. you may also wish to consider a wardrobe consultant. there would be a fee involved but that's just another option. other free ideas include attending seasonal trunk shows. all the better named vendors have them in various stores. you can add your name to the mailing list and attend when time permits.

the application of makeup and proper skin care cannot be stressed enough. if she isn't adept in this area i suggest making time to explore a few lines. you need to be aware of her skin condition and what she hopes to correct or offset. age and ethnicity are a factor as well as is price. i'm not going to suggest you go the la prairie route unless you have lots of money to spend. i will caution that you're honest about adopting any regime. some can be very time consuming and unless you have lots of time to spare it could become aggravating. get on the mailing list for sephora as well. you'll receive discounts and beauty tips that might help.

you can have her meet with a professional makeup artist for a session with application. she would learn some professional techniques and be able to see the process from start to finish. don't forget to invest in the appropriate application tools. it is pointless buying makeup that won't lay right without them. don't patronize a line that requires you to spend a certain amount for application tips and tricks. i'm a purist and i've been wearing chanel since i was 16, i'm 38 now. what they want are people who are interested that can become loyal customers. these people work on commission as do most in upscale retail establishments. ask for their card, give them your contact information and ask to be added to their clientele book. you'll find out in advance whenever a special event takes place. most of the better lines don't have a price point for application. so check around before you commit to such.

if you have more questions feel free to cmail me. i was groomed on these things as a child and know a great deal. best of luck.

regards,

porcelaine

The last time I went in there they told me I was a B cup....

Nothing against B-cups. I really love girls with tiny breasts but... my girls are not Bs.

Nope. If it's digging you need to try a different bra. You might need the same style (ie. demi, balconette, full) but a different product. Women's clothing is very frustrating. Two wrap-around dresses can be cut very different even if it's by the same designer. You have to check them all. Bras for those of us with larger breasts are just... frustrating. I'm glad I had the reduction and I have more selection than white, beige and brown but it's still hard.

All right, thank you, ladies, for your many helpful ideas and suggestions.

Please keep posting, though I'm likely done lurking the boards for tonight.

Take care, and may your straps never dig.  (that's bad, I'm told)

I like wacoal though I am not familiar with the other. Do they make larger sizes?

yes they go quite far up the scale. once you have been sized i recommend looking at off price retailers. the larger sizes often sit on the rack for a long time without moving. you could clean up nicely if you don't mind doing a little hunting. i've seen them in tj maxx, marshalls, and nordstrom rack to name a few. the bras usually retail for over $65 dollars, but they make an excellent product. if you must buy retail wait for a sale with percentage off coupons for additional savings. associates in the department can tell you when a sale is upcoming.

SO true! AquaticSub is bang-on, FEO. Also, please note that there can sometimes be variations even in what is supposed to be the same make/model/size bra. I once made the mistake of buying 3 (on clearance/ non returnable) after trying one on. I wound up with 2 that fit and 1 that didn't Live and learn, now I try on everything just to be sure.

On the general fashion front, you are very lucky to live close to the Garment District in LA. Once your girl has a good idea about what styles work for her, I highly recommend a shopping excursion to the bazillion little hole-in-the-wall shops there, as the prices usually beat your average upscale department stores for the same outfits. I'd volunteer to accompany you guys, but I seem to have left most of my "girly" fashion sense in the pocket of some old blue jeans .... next to my t-shirts (sticks tongue out at Kittin)

ETA- TJMaxx and Marshalls rock! Good suggestion, Porcelaine!

For makeup tips, this is really awesome: http://mizzchievouz.blogspot.com/. I found one of her videos on You Tube (I bought a "Bump It" off TV but couldn't figure out how to use it! LOL!!) but then I went to her Blogspot and she is really talented! She has these little tutorials, usually only about 2-5 minutes and shows how to do all kinds of makeup styles...from "natural look" and "makeup for younger girls" to "Gothic Makeup" and "Vamp Eyes". She also shows you which tools & brushes to use and shares little secrets of how to make it work. She does some hairstyles too, but most the things she does can be done in a few minutes and she really gives a good tutorial, it is amazing that she is actually a fairly "plain" looking girl naturally, but can totally transform herself with each look. A lot of the things she uses she either has available on her website or will post links of where you can get it. She even has a section of "inexpensive makeup" finds and will tell you which things are worth splurging on.

I think makeup is a great place to start, because it makes you want to go buy new cute outfits. If your girl doesn't know what outfits to buy or how to put things together, go window shopping one day until she comes across a store that appeals to you both. (Flipping through magazines can also give great ideas!) But when you get to the store, point at what's on the mannequin (the girls who work there usually style the mannequins) and tell them, "I want THAT in my size, but with pants instead of a skirt" and they will help you put things together. They work on commission and are paid to help you. You can even tell them, "I want to get 3 complete outfits and I only have $200" and they'll help put different things together. Mix & match is a great way to make a lot of cute outfits out of only a few items...then doll it up with a pair of heels (DSW, TJ Maxx, and Ross's are great places to get BARGAINS GALORE) and some inexpensive earrings & bracelets from Clair's or Icing. Once she finds a few things she likes and make her feel pretty, it will be easier to find other things on her own. Once she figures out her own style, then she can start bargain shopping for the things she knows she's after.

If you have access to a Frederick's of Hollywood store, it is SOOO much better to buy big-booby bras there. They are so much nicer than at Victoria's Secret (I think they are snobs) and their DD (or bigger) bras are sturdier (read: hold those puppies UP) but all of them are SEXXY (even the ones for the big-big girls!)

If I could only invest in one thing it would be a black or red corset/bustier. They look damn sexy on their own, with panties & garter/belt & stockings, but can also be worn under a blazer to work, under an oversized sweater or cardigan with jeans, or with a skirt with a shawl or wrap over your shoulders. They push your ta-tas up to THERE, slim your waist to Dita Von Tees proportions and make you feel sexy (even if their not laced up super tight). Who DOESN'T feel sexy in a corset??

That's quite true! I meant to mention that but forgot. This applies to everything, not just bras. Shoes, jeans, skirts, dresses.. everything!

So the mystery is... why can a guy who knows his size just grab 5 pairs of jeans off the shelf and they all fit, while we have to try on every pair??

Maybe check into the local groups and see if there's a submissives support group,  or an all womens group, that does things like girls night in, and true you couldn't come too, being a woman's only group,, but she could get a lot of advice and help with things like clothing and make up and stuff.

Would this be a good starting point?  Anyone in LA want to go lingerie shopping?  (these would be for use, not just my viewing pleasure)

Now this I have to take exception to.

Especially with jeans, one company's 30" inseam is another company's 32".  I have different jeans and pants, and they say about the same thing but fit very differently.

I confess to being pretty excited for going shopping for bras.  Seems like a useful time and a very very thrilling time.

Bliss!

You want to be really careful buying at those kind of stores because sometimes the reason they're in the discount stores is a flaw that kept it from selling. Now if it was really simple like a torn seam, that you could mend and it'd be good as new nobody would ever notice, that's fine, but if it was something like a seriously crooked zipper or something, not so fine.
