You can get different kinds of hamburger. The cheaper it is, the more fat it has in it than meat. It's a filler basically. You can get all natural ground beef, which tends to have less fat or you can get ground sirloin, which tends to run on the more expensive side of things.

cool![:)]
guess we don't have as much meat variety here[:-]

ghitaPVH -> RE: What could you do foodwise with the hamburger greese (10/28/2009 11:27:44 AM)

I try to always get a pretty lean ground beef if we use it at all...usually we use ground chicken or turkey breast in place of hamburger...but..if I do have hamburger grease left over..it goes to the animals and helps save on pet food costs....

soul2share -> RE: What could you do foodwise with the hamburger greese (10/28/2009 12:10:59 PM)

When I cook my hamburger, I cook it in water.....then I pour it all into a colander and rinse the grease off of it.  Why someone would use the grease for anything but cats or dogs is beyond me.  And there really isn't a lot of grease in hamburger, even the cheaper stuff I buy.  Cooking healthy does not mean adding fat to your foods for flavor.

janigrey -> RE: What could you do foodwise with the hamburger greese (10/28/2009 12:16:28 PM)

Animals need a certain amount of fat in their diet. My dogs do not eat commerically made dog food. I make it. So sometimes if the meat used to make their food is too lean ( this can be unhealthy for a dog) I have to increase the fat they consume elsewhere... hence using the grease to aid in making the treats.

Humans are essentially animals; we have to have fat. Much of the medical community, and the public, are so ill-informed about this stuff, it ain't funny. Things are changing, though.

agreed, you are better off eating a tablespoon of pure fat than a typical serving of mashed potatoes and gravy

It's not good for gravey, but I thought maybe you could flavor rice with it?

As you can all tell by my other posts, I am on a use it as much as you can kick, and streach it as far as you can and hamburger grease is usually thrown away, but I want idea's on using it.

Since it is not good for me, it goes in the trash, but I suppose you could use it to fry other things with, maybe eggs?

So we are on your 3rd thread about food, while you spend on non essentials.

i tend to feel you arent looking for real help, but the sympathy vote.

While you are sitting there laughing, try thinking of those who actually have to do these meals to survive. it isnt funny and thank god im no longer in that situation.

You can use it to line the coffin.

Please tell me  your not serious?  There are so many things that you could be using food wise, or healthy options for stretching your food.
Grease of any kind is the most unhealthy of residual left overs. I would not even give this to my pet. Some things are not meant to be saved and this is one of them.

It certainly seems with all the posts you put up lately about stretching your budget and all the great answers and suggestions you've received from forum members that considering this unhealthy option would not be necessary.

servantforuse -> RE: What could you do foodwise with the hamburger greese (10/29/2009 7:10:18 PM)

If the OP were interested in eating healthy, greasy hamburger isn't a way to get there. I buy 80 % lean ground round or sirloin. Cheap hamburger is a waste of money. As others have mentioned you pay by weight.

Rhodes85 -> RE: What could you do foodwise with the hamburger greese (10/29/2009 9:26:33 PM)

Personally I mix it in with my dogs dry food. Its good for her coat, especially with all the dry skin in the winter.

'As for pemmican... I actually know several folks that live off of it, soley. It's not really made with grease, but a combo of dried, lean meat, reduced to powder, and fat. Mix it, and let it dry. '

the fat is rendered lard, at least in modern production. Though I wouldn't try living off it as a sole food source. You'd stand a good chance of developing protein poisoning. On that note lean deer meat is an excellent meat to use for making pemmican. Its always good to have some stored away for the week long power outages we get out here a few times a year after fall/winter storms.

Odd, you'd think the nicer quality woulf taste better, but maybe yeah cause the greese is gone.

yeah you could maybe do up some potato's an then pat them dry,  or lube a skillet and then take most it out, just enough left to slick a skillet.

Actually it is a pretty tough question. While I would never give up my beloved bacon grease, hamburger isn't quite the same. Bacon grease imparts a good flavor to what is fried in it, but not so with hamberger grease.

Funny though, this is a good subject because I have taken to buying the cheapest hamburger I can find. All that high class low fat stuff tastes like sawdust, or more aptly put, has the texture of sawdust. For the best results cooking meat, it needs grease and salt. But the thing is not all of it makes it to your plate. That is crucial with the bacon grease as well. Maybe you could try frying some potatoes in it. Of course you drain them just like anything else. Even too much olive oil can wreck the food, this stuff is bound to be much worse.

Yes, you do, I get about one small measuring cup about two cups of it of grease, and it's because we don't get the super special lean kind.

I may be stupid but..do you really get that much greese from a hamburger????? [&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:]

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: What could you do foodwise with the hamburger greese (10/29/2009 9:36:51 PM)

yeah, also it doesn't need to be super healthy on the rare ocasion, just yummy or use up all ya got to make your buck  go farther but definatly staying on the larger side of healthy meals no pun intended, is better/

scarlet, that is plain wrong. I agree that some forms of grease are no good at all, but the no fat trend has gone too far. There are ESSENTIAL vitamins and minerals that can only be properly metabolised when included with fat. This is scientific fact.

I also agree that many people eat too much fat. But even the worst animal fat is not as bad as a hydrogenated substitute, i.e. Crisco.

Also, animals' metaboisms are different than ours and may require more fat. Another scientific fact.

Wake up now or you'll wake up on your death bed with cancer or something, and your pets may be right alongside, with some strange malady. Fat is a part of life, but of course too much is no good. Just the amount that comes with the burger is enough, and no it is not too much unless that is all you eat it all day.

Fat is not your enemy, carbs are. Fat does not turn into fat in the body, carbs do. And even some fat, beyond what it takes to deliver the vital minerals and vitamins to your metabolism, is very helpful in the digestive process.

The OP was just looking for a way to use it more effectively.

I don't eat fried eggs:D I just pop them in a pan that's a bit slippery and cook them under their own power, but yeah I supposed you could.
