It depends, but generally, I vote nay.

Where does it depend? Perhaps in how ignorant and scathing the newcomer may sound. Those two ingredients seldom win friends and influence people, or more importantly, help to build the tower of collective wisdom. That said, I've noticed some people place too much value in post count and general popularity. I had contributed here for many years under another alias. When I ditched it and started posting again, nearly everything I shared was poked, prodded or questioned in some way by others. Comparatively, with several paddles under my name, what I contributed in the past was often received very well, so this appears to me to evidence a slight bias in viewpoints shared here in relationship to thread count and recognition.

Humans are pack animals that interpret information based on personal context and social hierarchy, and the evidence of this can be seen in pixel text from time to time, too. Newcomer says something pretty brilliant and thoughtful, and it gets buried in the thread. Then, MasterThunderClaw belches out a bland, cynical truism and it's praised as sage wisdom. Meanwhile, another user's comments in the same thread are attacked due to black sheep syndrome. None of that is very productive. I think it's important to focus on what is written rather than the person or the perception of the person. While that may be impossible for humans to do completely, that turns out to be far more productive for all—albeit perhaps less entertaining in the end, I suppose. Therein lies the rub, I suspect.

Your interpretation of how you were seen is inaccurate. I have always held respect for you and think you and your profile and pictures are pretty HOT. They show someone in complete control. I found your posts and demeanor wise, in control albeit slightly emotionless. Sort of appealing yet scary. But then I love a guy in a suit!

Do I wish people would stay on topic? Sure...but, this is the big internet world where threads can take on a life of their own ( let's not forget the ever-popular Heterosexual_males_sucking_cock thread...read it, all of it...I dare you). This is a large part of online forums. Does it make it right? No. Should this stop people from posting questions? No, but it should make them give more thought to what they write and ask before hitting the OK button.

Something to remember about "regulars"...what, at first, may sound like a snide or off topic comment sometimes, in a round-about way, actually answers the question better than some of the long and drawn out replies. Many people start threads in the hopes of being able to justify their stance, not because they want discussion or opinions...doesn't matter if it's wrapped in a sweet package or dripping in sarcasm. If it isn't what they want to hear...they won't learn a thing.

I didn't vote in your poll because I wasn't able to give a definite answer...everything is relative and sometimes the flames and bitching are fun to watch...like a train wreck.

I resisted though, because, deep down, I'm a good person [1]

Ok, I'll post here since I am one of the sheep. I have seen my friends here be extremely welcoming to the newbies. Holly and DarkSteven are the welcome wagon and never fail to send a welcome post to the newbies on the introduction post. The newbies have been welcomed to Polls and random stupidity threads. I have seen many here be very helpful to many who come here. If they have questions, are acting stupidly(sub frenzy and such) or a medical concern. Everyone is there to help. If someone posts the loss of a loved one, even if they have not been here long they are given oodles of love and support.

What isnt supported is insults, combativeness, O.P's trying to bait people and arrogance that cant be backed up with knowledge.

I wanted to add......Newbies have a wealth of information from very wise people here. All they have to do is listen. If they come here to be validated and always right, trying to get people to agree with their views, they will be very disappointed.

it is my belief that many things can be misinterpreted in this medium. what one person perceives as snide might be something else or echoed tongue in cheek. because we're unable to hear the inflection or see the individual composing the response, assumptions will be made. in truth i ignore a great deal and focus on what is said rather than the method of delivery. some people possess the ability to express themselves in a manner where they always come across positively. others do not or refuse to devote their time in doing such.

whatever the case, i feel it is too much energy to invest in something i can never know. i'm always drawing conclusions based on my interpretation of events which may be influenced by mood, friendships, etc. if this is the most important thing i can conceive of doing with my time, i need another hobby. my opinion in regard to the poll is no.
