Just as you all forget the periods of stability under Thatcher, Brown was partly getting the benefit of economic plans started under the conservatives, and partly selling of the family silver, pun intended. I wont even get into the stealing from pension funds.

The thread is about the vote on the European constitution, promised to voters under the last Labour manifesto. You are smart enough to know this revised treaty is nothing more than the constitution under another name.

Camerons living in a dream if he thinks he can order the other nations to give us back any rights already lost. He wont fare any better than Brown, Blair was cute and jumped ship. I dont have much time for any of them.

It's news to me that there were any periods of stability under Thatcher. She managed to bribe the electorate with tax cuts by privatising public services, and that was about it.

I think Major's probably a better fit for Brown than Thatcher.

What I think is funny about this is Tony Blair being lined up for new European commissioner.

These people have no grounding in reality, even if the UK liked the man he then has to gain support from all the other nations he defied over Iraq. No chance. Also yes having him in such a position (short term) would be of benefit to the UK but now this role has been created not just for one commissioner but an infinite number after him which may or may not serve the best interests of the UK.

I perhaps wouldn't mind it some much if the position was elected. I think I'll hold to the party line that if Europe is growing then the mechanisms of Europe need updating to give every voter in Europe more of a say. Also there are areas where the EU should be working together and have one voice rather than going in different directions. Europe is perceived as a bit of a joke with this rotating presidency and that president not knowing how to distinguish the voice of Europe from the voice of his or her own state.

I think she means the Lisbon treaty.  Sounds like a mess.   A EU federal tax coming too.

It is hard to beleive people WANT that.

People mostly don't give a shit one way or the other. Myself, I'd much sooner lose sovereignity to Brussels than Washington: we get to elect MEPs but we don't have any say in which tit the minority of Americans who can be arsed to vote put in power, do we?

I had not thought of this.   That makes sense.

Believe me,  there are many in the US who do not want to dance for Washington OR Brussels.    Namely Washington.

I guess she don't like being referred to in the third person so in future we should all ensure she in accommodated in her wishes.

Perhaps frazzle would prefer that people used her screen name when referring to her?

Perhaps but who cares? I draw the line at murdering the English language for the sensibilities of people that can't understand there is nothing wrong with words such as ‘he’ or ‘she’. If perhaps somebody called her 'it' we could be getting into a debate as to if this is offensive or not.

The EU is a German conspiracy to get control of Europe and then the world.
