~ FR ~ Quite a stir over there, eh? But yeah, a hijack to be sure. Bowing is a fine Japanese custom which I have learned to respect, but it depends very much on how low you bow relative to how low the other person bows (or not). Obama either has no fucking idea, or else I don't want to go there. I did think it was cute that RML jumped on Bush lowering his head to receive a medallion as a "bow". We can probably chalk that one up to a panty problem, but you gotta admit Bush's hand-holding and kissy stuff was no less over the top. K.

Lots of overreaction to go around, will. I'd not jump so quickly to "lying" in an intentional sense. Either way, surely we all have better things to debate. This thing is pretty well beaten dead.

bowing is a civility thing in Japan. While he seemed unpolished/clumsy- the intent to show respect is the right thing to do. How would it have been if he snubbed the Japanese? When a guest - one is to go by the customs of the host country. I don't think Obama did anything wrong on this one.

Bowing deeply before someone who does not bow back is an act of subservience. Its showing more respect than is due. And nobody knows more about respect than Sanity. Look... I'll never get this arrogant "We don't talk to..." "We don't bow to..." "We're America" rhetoric. People cooperate better with people who aren't assholes. Doesn't mean we do things they want. Just means we can talk. We can't just bomb everyone. We don't have the money.
