By collar I mean a stereotypical collar that buckles/fastens/locks around the neck and by trouble I mean - it gives you trouble physically not any issues with commitment.

My collar from Valyraen is a necklace but I went out on the town the other night and wore one of my lovely dress collars. A very nice piece designed for greyhounds that was actually fit to my neck so it fastens perfectly. And I still find I can only wear it for so long before it begins to annoy the hell out of me and it must come off. It's not the material, which is beautiful soft. It's just having something around my neck - eventually it has to come off or I'm miserable. Which is a pity because I love the way collars and chokers look around my neck.

It's not an issue in our lives or anything since the one that is actually important doesn't give me trouble. I'm just curious if anyone else has a similiar issue with them.

I have trouble usually wearing them for longer than a few hours. They usually bite into my neck and if tight against my skin they start to itch and aggravate my eczema.

But I don't wear collars enough to be concerned so much about them though so it's not a huge problem for me.

Generally I can wear them for long periods of time without a problem, but not while I sleep, the sweat and the leather start to itch. I have only been asked to do that by one person in the past, and after seeing my itchy red neck, he relented.

I am claustrophobic, for me a collar is like someone intruding in my personal space.  I can only tolerate it for a while before feeling panic.  It is the same deal with turtlenecks or any high collar item of clothing, can't do it for long

Another vote for a necklace for just this reason. I can't stand anything tight around my neck. I wear cowl neck sweaters, not turtlenecks.

He will occasionally put a play collar around my neck for play and the second he starts untieing me, I'm ripping it off my neck. Which annoys him no end, so now I have to wait for him to remove it, counting the time in my head. lol.

I'm the same with claustrophobia - no high necks or even tighter necklaces.  I don't seem to mind our play collar - it's black nylon and while it's tight-fitting, it's on the narrower side and it doesn't bother me as much as something leather and thick would.

I wore Sir's collar 24/7 except when I was IN the shower.....it was the last thing off and the first thing back on me.  In the hottest days of summer, it was a little sweaty, but otherwise no problems.  I loved the feel of His collar around my neck.  It was a black leather dog collar with red stitching along the edges and a silver buckle and flat studs.

Narrower does seem to help athough usually, unless I have it fastened loosely, I still have to take it off after awhile.

This is me.   Although I never thought about me being claustrophic and maybe that is the reason.   After a while, it's coming off.

Add me to the claustrophobic pile. Neckties are barely tolerable, even if wearing a shirt with a collar size 1/2 to 1 size too big.

Collars and/or neck jewelry and me... absolutely not a good mix.

Have to agree with everyone else, even a top that comes up to my neck makes me feel sick.

A light weight necklace, i can generally live with, for a few hours, but anything permanently round my neck, is no way.

I have heard this complain from quite a few submissive types I have known over the years. Everything from being too small to wear one comfortably, to sensitivity when it moves around on their neck, so simply feeling like it was making it hard to breathe.

Most of them could handle playtime, but nothing longer than that. I suppose its a pretty common issue

I don't like anything tight around my neck, and don't do turtlenecks either.
When we first got my necklace that I wear all the time, it sometimes felt too tight. It's not tight, but rests above my collarbone, so is a constant presence at my neck. I've grown used to it, and it doesn't cause that panicky feeling anymore.
With the dog collar, he's careful to not put in on too tight, and always checks that a finger can be inserted after it's buckled. Occasionally it needs to be loosened a bit, but it doesn't bother me like a sweater would. It does create an awareness, but doesn't keep me from sleeping if it's on at night.

Master Charles bought me a black leather dog collar with a ring at the front in the States, and after a few days of wearing it 24 hours a day, it actually caused eczema or dermatitis which needed hydrocortisone cream and removal of the collar to get rid of the rash which started under my chin (strangely enough!) and spread all the way past my collarbone. We both suspected it may have been a reaction to the metal, as i have a nickel allergy. He took it off my neck after the rash reappeared once He had put my collar back on. He is currently looking for something hypoallergenic for me, possibly stainless steel silicone-lined to prevent the rash returning.

i saw a Victorian-style black ribbon and beaded choker in a wee boutique recently, which He told me to get as a dress collar until He is able to find something permanent that He can place around my neck when i return to the States.

i will never forget how i felt when He had to remove the last collar - even though it was for my wellbeing, as i had gotten a reaction, i still felt lost, adrift, like my heart was breaking. For me, it is a physical, tangible demonstration of my devotion and commitment to Him, which He understands. He was so wonderful to me when i was distressed, and told me that the collar on my heart and soul is what really counts.

He is currently considering lockedinsteel.com or Eternity Collars, and finding out if the metal is hypoallergenic.

k.

Most jewelry drives me nuts about half way through the day; when I do try to wear jewelry my co-workers place bets on what time I will remove it! Doesn't matter if its a watch, necklace, ring---it starts to make me feel anxious and uncomfortable.
A play collar is fine because I'm usually.....ummmm, distracted by all the other stuff going on!

i couldnt stand things on my neck for a long time wouldnt wear a necktie if you paid me. now the collar that my Mistress gave me does not bother me as i am doing it for Her, for my formal collar it took only a day to get uset to having it on but for some the closed in feeling may need to be worked on in increments or altered to the individual. KatyCain my daughter has nicle alergy so i understand the problem your having, even her bra closers has to be plastic or coated in nail polish.
