I also get claustrophobic wearing turtleneck sweaters. But I have no issue with wearing the play collar we have.

And my necklace/collar is fairly comfortable, it's 16" and not so tight as to be uncomfortable. It is sterling silver so it doesn't bother my nickel allergy either

Clip, that is a serious nickel allergy. I can't wear any earrings except surgical steel posts for more than a couple of hours but at least I don't need to check my bras for allergens.

I have never had any problems wearing any collars, except once. A posture collar made my neck a little stiff afterwards. From what people are saying, it doesn't sound like it's a preference that is easy to change, but maybe if you think of the discomfort it causes you and then compare it to how you'd feel without a dominant you might feel differently about it. Please don't think I'm implying that you're going to lose your dominant if you don't want to wear a collar! All these other responders have not lost their dominants after all. I'm just talking about a mindset: when you feel really grateful for something, it becomes easier to put up with discomfort. :) That's the only suggestion I can think of.

a necklace/choker is like a ring....if i had to remember to remove it off to shower or sleep...i'm in trouble (LOL)......i tend to forget i'm wearing them

This is one thing that worries me about the collar that I'm awaiting (due to arrive any day now). I have a tendency to get headaches easily if something is fastened fairly tightly around my neck for long periods of time. We hope that I can wear the collar most of the time so.... *crosses fingers*

I have eczema as well, but its generally not a problem on and around my neck.

i'm like you as well, hon - bra clips are all good, same with zippers, etc.....but any piercing has to have Titanium through it or 9ct or 18ct gold. Cheap earring from gift shops or drugstores are a no-no (even though a lot of them are gorgeous:) i have no idea why, aside from piercings, it's only my neck. Even watches are okay....maybe the skin above my collarbone is thinner or softer than the rest of me??......:P

Valyraen made me wait three years for my collar so I can understand wanting a collar. But when I was formally collared by an ex with a stereotypical collar, I still had to take it off. I wore it every day but every day I would remove it and carry it in my purse for an hour or so several times a day. I just couldn't wear it all the time. Yet at the same time, I adored that collar. It was my first and I was so eager for it. I even did a self-portrait of me wearing it because I was so excited to show it off. Certainly, if I had a gun to my head I was physically able to wear it but it drove me insane. I couldn't think about anything but how the collar was driving me nuts.

I'm grateful that Val understands and selected a collar that is easy for me to wear. I don't really think it's about wanting the collar. I think some people just can't stand to have something around their neck for too long and, just like a wedding ring will hopefully reflect a person's style and needs, so will the collar - even if it's a bracelet or something completely differet.

I think I'm one of the minority here.

I absolutely adore turtlenecks and that's almost all I wear in the winter. Gotta love Upper Midwest. :) I wear my collar 24/7/365. I have never had any issues with it. We bought mine from www.houseofcollars.com. From what I can tell from my reading, it's along the "Gorean/Turian" style.

Some individuals are wired differently and they may have triggers that others don't have.

Interestingly, I've never felt this with collars, and worn them quite comfortably - but I really DO have similar feeling about watches! Odd that.

It depends on the collar, and how I"m felling. most of the time, I love it. I like it pleasantly tight. if it's too loose it will drive me batty. But, sometimes, I get really really sensitive and anything touching my neck is too much.

I wore my ex's collar for 3 years straight without ever taking it off (not that I could have without help or some serious wire cutters, it being locked on with screws) and never had any problems. It was silver, tightish and narrow, and rested just at the base of my throat.

Leather collars on the other hand get too hot after a few hours and the buckle always digs in, I couldn't wear one of those for any serious length of time. Ditto with watches for some reason, if I have anything round my wrists I fiddle with it too much.

My collar is 18kt on an 18kt gold chain(with diamonds) actually the chain is 16 inches, I am with the others if i wear anythung tight around my neck i feel like i am choking. I am not but that is how i feel espically with turtlenecks. Which is odd cause as a kid i wore them. Anything tight around my neck i would hace to take off because i can't help the choking feeling.

one thing that might help those with clasterphobia issues is to try and breath with their diaghpram and not their chest. this helps to negate the sympathetic nervous system that wants to panic this is something that is used in therapy for those with panic attacks. this and some time training might help to aleviate some of the issues with the collars.

i love the feel of the leather tight arounfd my neck. as long as i'm awake. it makes it hard to breathe when sleeping so Master told me to get a thinner one i can wear to sleep. i have something around my neck all the time i'm awake.

I've also always liked the way collars looked.
(Before I thought I was a sub)

But I had a similar issue, after so long, the skin got too irritated, and I'd have to take it off for awhile.

Wish it didn't irritate me so much, since I like the way they look.

But it wasn't a big deal, since I was wearing them "for fashion" since I wasn't dating a domme or anything.

I love collars, however I have worn collars at various times and found them to be itchy or find myself becoming claustrophobic. If I am in a good place mentally (No, I don't mean sub space, I mean if I am feeling good about the relationship I am in, particularly if I know it pleases my other), the discomforts matter very little or not at all.

Well, i'm quickly going to become the "yoga" sub on these boards, but i really wanted to throw this in - my claustrophobia regarding collars totally went away after establishing a dedicated yoga and meditation practice. i'm so much less attached now to things - i really recommend a regular practice for all submissives!

i can still have a reaction now and then to the materials, particularly if worn overnight. But other than that i peacefully accept and crave a collar 24/7 now..... :)

Interesting. I've actually been bringing yoga into my life lately and haven't noticed an increased tolerance.
