Can people stop using the abbreviation POTUS it sounds like an environmentally friendly car made by Toyota damnit![8|]

...well technically it's an acronym, not an abbreviation......[8|]
(brought to you by the Society for Impressive Pedantry.....SIP)

You are correct but I’ve been thinking…
Shouldn't it be TPOTUS? Then there would be no need for the ‘the’ that always precedes POTUS?

Imho, there are plenty are plenty of ways for a U.S.. President to convey respect--eye contact, a nice smile, a firm handshake, correct form of address--without resorting to a gesture that can be (mis)construed.

Lucylastic -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 11:31:57 AM)

The point, Lucy, is that its funny how we're not supposed to discuss the President of the United States because there are supposedly more important things to post about...

Its a recurring joke around here, I was just pointing it out.

Thats all...

And its my opinion that even miss manners gets changed from time to time. Obama and the Emporer started off with a hand shake, a western tradition, and moved into a bow, an eastern custom, thereby melding the two forms of respect into a single gesture.

here is a video of Ws dad (as TPOTUS) giving the japanese prime minister head, and getting faced fucked so hard he vomited.

(equally as fucktarded a premise as this thread and all the others like it)

Total nightmare at UN conventions though, 30 minutes has to be set aside at the start for all the various combinations of handshaking, bowing and kissing.

Then they invented the ISO Greeting to streamline the process, why nobody uses this is beyond me.

TheHeretic -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 11:45:03 AM)

As long as he doesn't greet them like that at the White House.

Ron, that was one of the greatest diplomatic statements of all time!  It was regarding a Japanese trade proposal in the late 80's, IIRC.

You just live to deny republicans their great moments, don't you?

mnottertail -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 11:52:26 AM)

LOL, Hey Rich!!!!!!

well, when the basis of the great moment is some hairbrained, untutored, fucked up shit.......

what can I say. I love to laugh, that's my kink (one of them).

but I can be pretty serious on the more ADULT threads.

I had to find the information.. yet again.

Shall i also repost the pics of Bush bowing as well?

AMERICAN PRESIDENTS SHOULD NOT BE BOWING TO ROYALITY!

Plain and simple.

It shows respect for their culture. Bowing is not an act of submission but of respect. Go into any martial arts studio and the head instructor will bow to their newest student before sparring. That the emperor doesn't bow is also traditional. Not bowing to him would have been a huge insult that just isn't worth making. I'm pretty sure the importance of good relations with Japan is more important than some internet guys bitching on a forum.

Does anyone know if Obama bowed to, or traded bows with, the Japanese prime minister?

NihilusZero -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 12:17:11 PM)

So what's the argument here? That it compromises our vicarious american machismo for the president to greet someone in a manner corresponding to their culture if we can draw subservient or effeminate inferences from the act?
