Rule,
It is ridiculous isn't it?

The only question this raised to me was how, after all those well documented fuck ups caused by Obama's 'advisers'; how is it possible that some adviser set Obama up for this scrutiny?

That was a neutral comment and so is this...

Remember when "Why does Obama, or any candidate, need experience?" These stupid faux pas shouldn't be happening. They serve to distract from more important issues.

This is a "JEEZ! SOMEBODY in the Administration should have know better and advised him!" moment. There seems to have been an inordinate amount of these in the little time that's transpired since January, don't you think?

Oh for Christ's sake Merc.

Do I really need to bring up all the links of prior faux pas from every administration, including Bush Sr. vomiting on the Japanese Prime Minister?

What it would change is people are human, even Presidents, and point out how ridiculous this whole controversy has become.

But I think I will bow out of it now.

I just can't decide whether to do it at a 15 degree, 30 degree, or 45 degree angle.

You seem pretty well versed in that.  Any suggestions?

Bush Sr. vomiting on the Japanese Prime Minister?

I think any protocol adviser, if asked, would have no problem preemptively pointing out to President Bush that vomiting on the Japanese Prime Minister should be avoided. Based upon the track record of President Obama's advisers, I think they would need to look it up.

As I said, it was and is a neutral statement. However, considering that so much attention to detail and the "US image" under Bush; the lack of similar attention can only point to one condition, personal or media driven - bias.

To me it is a disclosure of something much more basic and troubling. This points to a condition that there isn't anyone in this Administration that is qualified to advise the President on these mundane matters. Is there anyone in the Administration who is qualified to advise the President on more important matters?

I gotta agree, that the Obama protocol handlers are for shit, but yanno, its the thought that counts and the japanese are pretty forgiving of the gai jin and their trouble with their intricate traditions.

My man looked like he was scooping up a basketball didn't he? LOL.

But Goddammit, he tried, at least he did that.

Actually the angle, where the eyes look, head and hand position have a lot to do with it. So if something is going to be critqued, how we bowed would be a more applicable and substantial item to discuss. All I know is that if I were Obama, after that incident, I would fire whoever prepped me on the bow, if I had been taught incorrectly.

But in the grand scope of things, it is like fucking up a handshake, which many people do. The spirit of ettiquette was upheld, and the mission of diplomacy was the goal, so while a minor thing, angle is a debate of substance.

Ron, I'm not against Obama bowing. I think making overmuch of it is a crock of shit, as far as that goes. But jeez, you know the etiquette of bowing. Equals bow equally. Ferchrissake, look at the man. A standing bow is normally 15-30 degrees. Obama practically has his face in the guy's crotch. It's inappropriate. I don't mean that bowing is inappropriate. I mean bowing inappropriately is inappropriate.

Really?

Has the endless Obama criticism been reduced to the actual angle of his bowing?

This has just become too ridiculous.

It's interesting that you complain about anyone bringing up superficial issues when it involves Republicans, but when it involves a Democrat the sky is falling.

But then again, you're one of them thar Independents who is qualified to make those judgments, because, after all, you is completely one of them non-partisan fellers.

"Sky is falling"? Is that your representation of Obama being advised to bow as he did, or do you think he came up with it all by himself, unlike any of the other many dignitaries who were there? Why do you put such a high premium on it?

I asked a question regarding the only issue I thought worthy concerning this inconsequential gesture that you now represent me taking a 'sky is falling' position. Interesting! In your mind is it?

However, if you'd like, feel free to bring up more superficial issues on Republicans and I'll give my opinion on whether they are "sky is falling" - I doubt any will be, but go ahead.

However, once again, the criticism is of the question and comes without an answer to the question. Seems to be a simple yes or no - care to answer it?

Is this a confidence builder for the reputation of the people Obama has decided to include in his inner circle of advisers?

Ah yes, all our Independent posters are standing in line to demonstrate their impartiality.

"...Angle is a debate of substance."

Orion, I usually respect your posts, but you must be kidding me here.

I understand a little about Japanese culture and the custom of bowing.

I also understand that the Japanese are not the ones complaining in this farce.

Just a thought. Every source i have found on how to bow indicated that one bows deeper and longer when the recipient is older. Or are the sources wrong.

I don't want my President, Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conserative, Man or Woman BOWING to royals or for that matter anyone else.

I don't want the American flag dipped for them either.

And I am sick and tied of hearing about the silliness of diplomacy in theses matters.

BTW... and this is a broad statement not meant for you per se Orion.

This is a Classical Liberal Argument. Royality of ANY sort is wrong and its high time it comes to an end on this planet.

See if you can get a constitutional amendment.

The only true arguments are liberal in nature, neo-cons don't have the diversity or depth of thought to sustain reasoned debate.

"a Classical Liberal Argument"......WTF,please explain how this has anything to do with liberals or conservatives for that matter. While your at it try to make a case for our country having the right to tell the rest of the world that"Royalty of ANY sort is wrong and its high time it comes to an end on this planet"
That last is a classical argument too.....but discretion prohibits me from specifying just what type of argument!

Actually... you are correct. The world does not revolve around FDD...

It revolves around Barack Obama!

quote:

World urgently watching US-China talks, Obama says

BEIJING – (AP) President Barack Obama declared Monday the world is urgently watching for a "meeting of the minds" between the U.S. and China as he meets with President Hu Jintao on the globe's biggest issues — climate change, economic recession, nuclear proliferation and more.

Obama also prodded China about Internet controls and free speech, but his message was not widely heard in the country because his words were drastically limited online and shown on just one regional television channel.
