FatDomDaddy -> Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 10:36:20 AM)

Seriously!

What is President Obama doing???

The United States of America is a country founded as the antithesis to royality!

Think this has been done already. If he feels like showing respect for something or someone then that is a personal choice.

Why shake hands for instance, it's just done as a courtesy to greet someone not mandatory for anyone.

*never mind...been there, done that*

If Obama bowed to an American or anyone from any other culture where it was considered a submissive act, I'd be furious.  But to an Asian, where bowing takes the place of handshakes...

I have to admit that I'm still kinda squicked by Bush holding hands and kissing the Saudi prince, though.  Guess I'm not that open minded.

Showing respect.

And I applaud him for it.

At least here it is in it's own topic, and not a hijack by someone to derail the OP.

Bowing as a sign of respect has been practiced in many forms, by many cultures. It is not bowing as their servant. Now if he was bending knee to a foreign power, that may be different, and that may be where some people are confused.

FR

....so would some posters rather the POTUS went up to, say, the Emperor of Japan and gave him a friendly slug on the shoulder?

Would those same posters want to ban American Citizens from bowing to opponents in Olympic martial art contests?

Are those same posters so utterly devoid of understanding of other cultures that they'd rather the POTUS showed ignorant disrespect to other people rather than display some knowledge of how other cultures act politely?

Or is this merely another bash Obama thread in disguise?

Can people stop using the abbreviation POTUS it sounds like an environmentally friendly car made by Toyota damnit![8|]

No it is not... it is a sign of submission to a superior in Japan
And I applaud him for it.

I don't see a problem here, apart from the fact he damn near tipped over leaning so far forward. I'm curious though, was the gesture returned in that head gesture of the Emperor?

Do you think he appoligized for kicking their ass in WWII?

The worst thing that will come out of this is that I'm sure that idiot Shaun Hannity won't shut up about it all week.

Yes he did.

xBullx -> RE: Mr. President, quit bowing to royals!!! (11/15/2009 11:10:54 AM)

Then that bothers me, the respect should be mutual...

But that's surely not Obama's fault...

You really think the Emperor of Japan is in the habit of bowing to anybody? Ever? [:D]

Your video proved that he did not bow, not even slightly.

I see you've decided against reposting the video here, so I'll do it instead:

The emperor of Japan, by tradition, and until this time, bows to no one, but he did bow in response to Obama.

Here is the video of that photo op

quote:

Let's begin learning how to bow properly in Japan. Bowing seems simple, but there are different ways of bowing. It depends on the social status or age of the person you bow to. If the person is higher status or older than you are, you should bow deeper and longer. It is polite to bow, bending from your waist. Men usually keep their hands in their sides, and women usually put their hands together on their thighs with their fingers touching. If it is a casual situation, you can bow like nodding. The most frequent bow is a bow of about 15 degrees. You might feel strange to do it, but try to bow in Japan. You will be considered very polite.
