So you would put someone’s right to offend other people above the right of other people to be protected from being offended. Do you not think that allowing people to say whatever they want and then attacking anyone who disagrees with them stifles discourse?. You defend peoples right to free speech though what about defending the right to speak of people who disagree with them.

Both can speak. What is bad is silencing them. If people aren't silenced, you can learn so much about them like they are insensitive bores, racists, stupid and addled. By all means let them speak

Now see.. that offended this one... thing is.. it's really no biggy. I know I'm not a racist because I laugh at a joke or two.. specially if it's told be Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, or even Eddie Murphey. Bill Cosby is a hoot. Plus I got friends of all walks of life.

Yep.. I can be a bore too

I'm dumb... not stupid thank you.. <smiles>

grrr......... breaks out dictionary again for Addled... Gee thanks Mr Warren.. LOL

Edited to Add... Ellen Degeneres <spelling> Nathan Lane.... to name a few.. are they wrong.. when they tell gay jokes or straight jokes as well?

Goes back to dictionary again... mumbling at Mr Warren... <smiles>

See, you weren't silenced. Now we can all draw our own conclusions about you. Isn't that nice.

  • I will defend the right to speak freely.
  • I believe that the freedom of speach brigs the responsibility of being accountable for what you have said.

I never tried to silence anyone. I do not know where that came from. I got no problems about anyone voicing their opinions. And yes.. it's nice if everyone... wants to even voice their opinions about me openly.. go for it. Because I know how to avoid the area where I know the offense is taking place. If it offends me. <smiles>

I very well may not be liked... but I like me... and not ashamed of it to the point I get offended when someone jokes about me. Even if they're meaning to be mean. Call me a fat ass.. i'm bound to come back with.. yep.. but it's a soft fat ass.

Yes, but HOW soft is your soft fat ass, that's what this inquiring sissy wants to know? Does your soft fat ass like to be worshipped? Are you into queening? Now that's been known to silence this sissy ... well, for a little while at least!

Remember that most opinions are like assholes ... probe them a little and you'll find a butt load of shit!

This is an interesting experiment in free speech. Reread my posts and see if you can see anywhere that I've said anything bad about you, yet you seem to feel I have. Now, what does that tell you?

[I've gone back and added all the snipped materials, both your and mine so the exercise will be even easier for you.]

Well, the "see, you weren't silenced" sounds like you're speaking to a five-year old........"Now we can all draw our own conclusions about you" makes it seem like she's stuck out on a limb alone.........."Isn't that nice"..... sounds condescending.

Of course, I jumped the gun once on this thread, so as to not do so again, I'll say that all of the above is assumption, and the only one who knows what was intended is you *grins*.

The one thing true did that may have been incorrect was assuming your initial post was referring to her. I didn't see it as such.

I don’t know how far I would go to curbing peoples right to speak freely or if I would at all, though I hate it when people use it as a way of defending a bigoted view point, I think intelligent people should base their beliefs on reason and experience. The concept of free speech interests me and I wanted other peoples opinions on it if I knew the answer I would not have posted my original message.

I don’t agree that free speech makes people accountable for what they say, in many ways people use it as a defence and argument against being accountable for any of their viewpoints.

I never said that it makes them accountable. What I did say is:

I believe that the freedom of speach brings the responsibility of being accountable for what you have said.

There is a difference. (Edited to correct brigs to brings)

Nope I do not think you have either. So there for ... really Mr Warren... it tells this one nothing. Because I do not feel you have said anything bad about me at all.

But I do appreciate you making it easier for me to read our past post. Sure beats having to go back and read them all... thanks. <smiles>

Having your eyesight proven defective once, you continue to prove the point. I was not referring to her or anyone. It was a general comment.

Hmm, i must confess, i thought you were referring to her too. Must have been saying it while quoting her to cause such a misunderstanding.

We must defend both. It's a pity that intolerant views are sometimes given a voice, but it may be instructive to then discuss why that particular viewpoint is and should be unacceptable to society overall.

Pretty obviously this is about the "humor" thread of the other day - I just chalk it up to people not realizing how insensitive a joke that strings together gays, AIDS, and diarrhea actually is. I tried to make that point rather forcefully as I did not want to be misunderstood. I don't think anyone should be silenced per se, but I think they should have better manners than to tell such a fucked up joke in the first place - and if they don't, I don't mind making a point about why their joke is rude and insensitive.

BTW, there is a connection between two of the three things listed above, it's just not funny:
