Normal day would be: cup of coffee, cereal w/ milk, veggies for snacks, some more coffee, some rice with salmon, more veggies or fruit, dinner - some sort of pasta/rice with meat, a glass of wine, and perhaps some popcorn with salt for TV snack in the evening. Normally I average about 2000-2300 calories per day.

That doesn't sound too bad but let's get more specific.
Do you use skim milk or whole milk in your cereal?
Are you veggies plain or w/butter?  What about your rice?
Pasta AND rice together? What type of sauce on the pasta?
Salt on the popcorn......butter too?

You might want to try half a glass of wine, or cut it out all together & drink watter. I don't see water anywhere in your intake & a person needs at least a gallon a day (not all at once, but throughout the day)

lowfat milk on the cereal.
Veggies are usually raw, or steamed without the trimmings
Pasta or rice lol... sorry. Normally rice is just plain with and pasta is with some bouillon and some butter (1tsp/2cups). I usually put broccoli, corn, and carrot in the pasta.
Popcorn is just with some salt, no butter.
Not a very good water drinker, but i try to get at least eight 8oz glasses in per day.... working on drinking more.

You get over 2000 calories from what you mentioned above? How much do you eat?
Do you eat heaping plateful's of pasta/or rice?
Remember that veggies have sugar in them too so read the package before consuming.

Try wholewheat pasta, brown rice, fat free butter if you absolutely have to have butter, skim milk. Also include tuna fish, egg whites (no yolk), almonds, cottage cheese when you start exercising.
Eat 5-6 small meals instead of 3 large meals w/snacks in between.

WTF is "fat-free butter", asks this thoroughly Norwegian slut.  It sounds like an oxymoron to me.  Also remember that the body requires some fats in order to function.  And lots of fat free stuff has other bad stuff in it that will pack on lbs, so beware of that.

VirginPotty -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (2/3/2010 9:10:07 AM)

That's true, Lin about the "other bad things".
http://www.healthcastle.com/goodfats-badfats.shtml

Fat free butter is a butter that doesn't melt! Lol, I tried making grilled cheese sandwiches w/it & the damn stuff wouldn't melt in the pan!

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (2/3/2010 10:14:27 AM)

Well, as a twue Norwegian, I can tell you that fat-free dairy products are the Devil's work!!  I was so happy to find organic whole milk yogurt.  Yummmmm!!  I don't drink milk at all, I get most of my dairy from that 1-2 servings of yogurt each day.  When we were kids the milk came with the cream on top.  If my father got to it first, he would pour the cream into his coffee & we all would drink the leavings.  We didn't allow that to happen too often, poor guy.  But my mother didn't believe that coffee should have anything in it but lots of coffee & a little water.  Since I've been on this weight loss trip, I've pretty much given up cheese.  Although I found a pimento cheese thing at Whole Foods the other night that I could just sit & eat til it's all gone!!  I restrained myself.  What??  There's currently nobody else to restrain me.  *sob*

I'm so proud of all of you!

Back a few years ago, my husband left me. I said I lost 190 lbs in one day!

After he left, I got my ass up and started walking. I lost about 35 lbs in 6 months.

My highest weight was 210 (size 18) and now I am about 150 lbs size 6.

So, I know the struggle. It's been 5 years and I've kept it off. I hate exercise, but I keep doing it because it works.

I really believe you have to find what works for your body. For some, overall low calorie is fine, for others low fat works. For me, it is low processed-carbs. And I'm always watching. Watching doesn't mean denying myself every time, just moderation.

Some personal tips:

Try drinking a glass of water instead of a snack (at least it puts it off for a while)
Ask yourself if you are really hungry or just bored or emotional.
Schedule a treat. Or allow dessert on weekends. Just don't always say no or you'll obsess about what it is you want.
Plan in advance what you will eat when a craving hits.
Set realistic, small goals.
Reward yourself (non food rewards) when you reach them.
When you reach your goal- DON'T return to old eating habits.

Just my [sm=2cents.gif]

This is great advice! The kind I keep getting from others but don't adhere to. It's exactly how my best friend started and she's now down to a size seven. Maybe I need to get serious about it.

One thing that's been working for me lately was WAITING after a meal for the food to settle. My main problem is that I eat too fast so I'll eat alot in a little bit of time to feel full.
I've been waiting after my meals before running for something else & it's actually been working better for me.

Bew, I cannot BELIEVE that Hejira was EVER overweight! What an inspiration!

One thing that I did at the begining--and it seems a little weird-- is that I was not waiting until I got hungry between meals.  Normally you would think "Don't eat unless you're hungry" but that doesn't work (for me) because that's when I think about all the things I don't have to eat.  (Like the hot wings, and the chocolate.)

I am --trying to!-- eat every four hours, so when I eat I'm not famished or overly rumbly, honestly sometimes not even hungry....and this helps me to not consume so much.

Today I didn't do so well.  I had hot cereal from Kashi for breakfast, along with a glass of milk around 7 and by 9 I was hungry.  Normally at that time I get a piece of fruit because I can't seem to eat the oatmeal, milk and the fruit all together in the morning, however this morning I went to the grocery store for something else and ended up buying a deli sandwich there and eating half of it along with some hummus and grape tomatoes.  It was just roast beef, cheese, lettuce and tomato-- no mayo or anything like that-- but (for some reason) that just totally hit the spot.

I finished the other half for lunch along with a little bit of the veggie soup I packed, and ate my usual snack in the afternoon...BUT... I wasn't hungry at all during the day after I ate that (well, duh it was a 6 inch sub sandwich).

Here's what I am wondering as I sit here and type:
Is it possible for your body to anticipate what you're going to give it-- if you eat mostly the same things during the week-- and if so is there a way your body can "trick" you into feeling like you want more than you need?

I realize that sounds a little crazy, but that's what I'm thinking!  [:)]

For the last 3 weeks I've had that Kashi hot cereal for breakfast.  It would last me until lunch, not a problem.  Now, all of a sudden that doesn't seem to get me through.  It's weird.

Here's my plan for tomorrow:
Eat the cereal, have an egg along with it.  See if that helps.  If it does, I'll need to figure out a way to add in more protein for breakfast because I don't see myself frying an egg every morning and I don't care for scrambled.

Any thoughts?

BTW-
Hejira is totally hot and she is an inspiration!  ;)

VirginPotty -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (2/4/2010 6:20:31 AM)

Thank you Ron & Angel for the links! Very informative reading Angel...Ron I'll have to check that book out sooner rather than later!

Anne....
It's very important to get a balanced diet with plenty of variety
A sandwich with meat and vegetables on it is quite balanced..... so that's OK.  But if you eat the same thing all the time and don't get any variety you're only getting one very small selection of nutrients.... and that's potentally a problem.  The nutrition in bread is different to that in starchy vegetables.  The nutrition in turkey is different to that in fish.  The nutrition in a lettuce mix is different to that in some steamed broccoli.  The list goes on.
There is a world of hundreds of amazing foods out there.... try a lot more of them if you want to be in good health. Much like doing the same exercise day in/day out your body becomes accustomed to it & doesn't respond after awhile that's why gym's mix up the workouts every 3 months. Same thing w/your diet, I ate rice & salsa for dinner every night for 1 year straight. In the beginning I lost weight but after awhile I became stagnant and did not lose anymore because my body became used to that food.
Your body will become accustomed to the same amount of calories, nutrition, protein, carbs, etc. I have a list of favorites too, but mix it up, and some days I eat a lot more (healthy) calories than I should, then the next day I eat way less to make up for it. I have to keep tricking my body to keep losing.
When your body is "tricking" you into eating more it's really telling you what it needs to survive. Ever eat alot of sweets endlessly then crave veggies? That's your body telling you it needs something nutritous! Don't ignore your body's signals but on the flip side don't over indulge. If your body craves meat don't eat a sub full of it, eat a small portion & chew slowly giving it time to savor the flavor then when you swallow (shup Ron) give it time to digest before taking that next bite.
Same thing w/sweets and anything else your body craves. There's truth in the words..."Quality not quantity".

VirginPotty -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (2/4/2010 6:28:08 AM)

I did another 2 hours in the gym last night....3 sets of cardio at 30 minutes each & 30 minutes in the weight room working both upper & lower body.  I damn near crawled to my car! When I got home & was in the shower I was actually groaning in pain and not in a good way either[>:]

I ate a bowl of brown rice & green beans w/balsamic vinegar & seasoned salt (for flavor) & 1 16oz botther of diet green tea. I felt a bit lightheaded after dinner so I knew my body needed something extra so I had a handful of walnuts. I actually was not hungry but I knew if I didn't eat those I'd become hypoglycemic and then I'd shove alot worse food in my mouth in large quantities so I forced myself to eat the walnuts. (See Anne, listen to your body.....it knows what it needs)

Did y'all know that processed foods is a large contributor to cellulite?
Start eating natural foods and the chances of cellulite are highly unlikely! You can get rid of it the same way in addition to exercise

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (2/4/2010 7:59:14 AM)

I exercised all my muscles yesterday building that @#$$^&** bookcase.  I had to lift it up & lie it down slowly several times.  Today, I have some aches & pains.  But at least I did something more than walk Granny at her pace up & down the halls here.  I didn't eat "right", but Joan was buying so it felt kinda ungrateful to say no to the pizza.  On the flip side, I haven't gained any weight.  I am still under 250!!!  I am still down 37 lbs from my starting weight in August.  I'm not discouraged.  I know that there will come a day here soon when I will step on the scale & see another 3 lb weight loss.  I plan to stay in the home this weekend due to the predicted snow.  Joan kept trying to buy me "junk food" to tide me over while I'm here.  She says that she's worried that I will feel "deprived".  I don't know how I can feel deprived with all the good healthy foods that I will bring.  [:)]
