Its a TV show not something that should be mimicked or a seen as a realistic timeline. Even the trainers will tell you that and the contestants. WHich is why i believe they don't show a lot of detail in terms of what they are really doing so people won't try and mimik them. 4-8 hours of working out and doing physical activity is NOT that big of a deal Linea, that is how our country got this way, people back before the internet, TV, cars etc did 4-8 hours a day of physical labor and activity. i didn't say they work out at a high intensity 4-6 hours a day, from what i heard that the high intensity is only about an hour a day and the rest is walking on treadmills, swimming, walking outside etc. The problem that got us here is people think working out like that is BAD for you, no what happened is people don't have the TIME to do it anymore and they don't incorporate it throughout their day so it seems extreme to do that much physical movement and activity in a day. They have usually a calorie burn that they much achieve, if i walked 4 hours in a day (i.e. 12-16 hours) at a steady to slow pace, i could easily burn 3-400 calories in an hour which means i would burn anywhere from 12-16oo calories a day and that's not counting my bodies normal calorie burn. It only seems like a lot people people think working out as high intensity. Really, they are only doing that about an hour a day.

Hell, i remember as a kid i would leave home at 9 am and stay outside all day playing until dinner than go in and back out til it got dark, riding bikes, running around, playing sports etc. In HS, we had two hour practices before class and after class which was 4 hours a day of working out and sports training and most of us athletes participated in gym instead of choosing a athletic study hall during every day. Same with college and in college we walked all over campus - miles a day sometimes.

It only seems like a lot becuase 1) most people may not have time to work out that much, 2) many people say they don't have time but its only because they choose not to sacrifice something else in their lives, 3) many people sit in front of a computer when they could be doing something physical etc.

Don't get the show wrong, The biggest loser show is NOT a hey do it this way its shown on TV as the contestants do -- its a TV show, but its amazing what it does for people in my opinion, i watch this show and see these people change right before my eyes and its incredible and i am glad they did it for people who really need it in my opinoin. What's sad is people who only have 50-60 lbs to lose to become normal weight aren't the norm -- what's said is they don't have to search for these people because there are sooo many of them. Its inspired people all over the world to make a change, it has contests and such and right now they have a pound for pound challenge wherein you bid on how much weight you think you will lose during the season and up to 50 lbs they will donate that amount of food in pounds to your local food shelter. Subway has a nationwide contest going.

You should be proud of yourself and if you don't think 50 pounds is not dramatic i don't know what is. That is a phenomenal amount. And you know what, you are doing it the best way that works for you. However, your way, doesn't mean it would work for all. But the concept you speak about is what most of it is about. My issue is not my lack of knowledge, hell i know more about working out and eating right that its embarrassing to admit i am out of shape and overweight. However, my downfall is my brain, not what i do. Its my focus. i know that. Which is why to me, the ranch concept would be excellent for me or people like me because that is my ONLY focus. For you, you have been able to maintain your determination, focus, etc, and you know you should be VERY proud of that and never say that 50 lbs isn't dramatic. Its amazing.

No, the show is not a concept to be mimiced or used to gauge how you are doing, its a TV SHOW, and you do what works for you. This is a TV show, one that actually has helped on the ranch a VERY LIMITED number of people out of the millions who are obese but it has inspired many people to make the determination to change.

I agree completely, eating less and moving more is a huge part of it.

I'm not putting down the show at all.  I rarely watch tv & that's a show that I do enjoy watching when I find it on.  I am amazed at how these people make these incredible changes in their bodies.  And I root for all of them.  I felt bad this week because the 2 smallest women only lost 1 lb each.  I was thinking that since they both said that they worked out really hard they probably gained muscle which helps to burn off fat.

I think that my weight loss is amazing.  I just meant that it has been slow & steady for me, not dramatic like it is on the show.  It's taken me 7 months to achieve the 50 lb weight loss.  Most days I still don't believe that it happened.  When I get back to Oregon, I am going to get serious about it again.  My daughter with whom I'll be living has 2 large-ish dogs who I will attempt to walk at least once a day.  I say attempt because they haven't ever really been leash trained.  They've always just gone outside in the yard & run around.  So it should be an interesting attempt.  LOL

You banked on something here that bothers me about the show -- that they don't explain that muscle weighs more than fat, even though a benefit is that it helps burn fat at a resting stage. I would like to see the show do a body fat % loss lol. And i think that would also help people understand what else all the physical activity does.

You know while i love watching the weight loss, what i love more is when they meet with doc and he gives them all these benefits their weightloss has done for them -- gaining years, getting off meds, losing fat around their lungs and heart etc. I LOVE those scenes lol.

grins, you should make a deal with your sister -- tell her to let the dogs out every day so you have to run around and catch them.

I am disgusted with myself.

I am on a diuretic to get rid of the water gain.  My feet and ankles are swollen beyond belief.  It is harder to get my shoes on.  I have been munching on salad like crazy (baby mixed greens) and I have been eating roasted chicken as my protein.  I am walking a lot more when I am not at Curves (forgot my travel pass).  I am serious thinking about getting a gastric bypass surgery if I had the funds.

I keep wondering WTH am I to do.  I eat smaller portions, I am getting my diet sodas out of my system.  I enjoy my Curves sessions. I admit that I do have a thyroid problem and it is being treated.I am taking meds that can cause weight gain, but that has been for over a year.

I will see my doctor next Wednesday.  I have to see the p-doc on Thursday and the dentist on Friday.  I am being poked and prodded in every direction.

Any diet system I tried has failed.  The next one is the South Beach diet since I had the books for over a year.

I am trying not to give up hope but I just keep getting larger to when I can barely fit in my clothes I have moved up to a 3x in shorts and tops.

I just don't know what to do anymore.

Some of the things that you can do:

*Buy a pedometer so that you can see how far you actually walk & how fast you walk.  Then go to an online calorie burning calculator & see how many calories you are really burning.

*Write out a food diary & be completely honest about every single thing that you eat.

*Measure your portions & look up the nutritional content of each thing that you ingest.

*Drink more fluids.  If you put Crystal Lite in your water, you might as well be drinking diet soda because it has the same sugar substitute in it.

*Salads are not necessarily the best foods.  Have you ever looked at "Eat This Not That"?  It has some good information about the real nutritional benefits of different kinds of foods.  Sometimes we perceive a food to be a good "diet" food when it really isn't.

*How much sodium is in the roasted chicken that you eat?  Do you eat only white meat or dark meat as well?

*What kinds of veggies & fruits are you eating?  What types of grains?  You need a balanced diet.

ShaharThorne, are you still eating honeybuns. Are you having dressing on your salad. Are you marinating the chicken. The diet soda if you are even drinking a glass takes 5 glasses of pure water OVER the average amount of water you need to drink. It does sound though like something is screwy with your bloating and swelling.

Try adding some veggies to your salad. Also if you are eating any processed food, check the label for sugar and sodium contents.

Lower carb is good IF you follow it. However, if you follow it one day and then don't or cheat the next, you won't get the benefits from it. I think the suggestion of a food diary is good and BE honest and accurate. Fitday.com is a good website to track your food. I think the dailyplate.com is another i have heard good things about.

Have you had yourself tested for diabetes? I thought swelling was a symptom and tiredness especially after you eat.

Don't get discouraged just look at it as a sign to reevaluate and maybe readjust somethings. You may want to do a food diary for a couple days before you see the doctor, that may be of use to him.

No salt on the chicken unless you count the rub.  I eat the breast without the skin (damn, I sound like Grandma now).  I have to stop some of the Crystal Light (store brand) because the grape variety has sodium cirtrite in it.  The cherry flavor is fine.  I just have to do more label reading.  I have to get more Special K cereal so I can have my crushing love.

I have stopped eating gizzards.  If I want a steak, I cook it in the plug-in grill.  I am trying to avoid ice cream but I cannot find frozen yogurt.  I got yogurt here at Bo's place.  If I am not eating chicken I usually bake fries and fish (no oil added).

I do eat mac and cheese if it is made with Velveeta cheese  I avoid anything with peppers.  I hunger for Mexican food and get a quesdilla   off and on.  Not to mention the refried beans...LOL!

Sorry..heard mad giggling coming from Lizard's bedroom.  Had to make sure that there no monkey business going on (he was tickling her like crazy).

The bigger problem with the crystal lite is the sweetener, IMO.

Velveeta is not a healthy food.  What is in the rub?  If there is salt in the rub, it counts as salt.  Salt is not the only form that sodium takes.  It occurs naturally in many foods.  Even baked fries aren't healthy for you, unless they are home made.  If they are frozen, look at the label to determine fat & sodium content.  Refried beans are full of fat & sodium also.

It seems that you are eating a little more than the baby mixed greens & roasted chicken that you stated in the earlier post.  I really think that you should read every label, measure your food & keep a food diary.  It's the only way to be sure of what you are actually eating, not what you think you're eating.

I have been honey-bun free for over a month now.  My blood sugar has been normal when my doctor does blood work.  From what I understand, hypothyroidism can cause some weight gain, but 20 pounds in a 2 month period?  I developed a staph infection on my chest, shoulders and neck.  I am taking antibiotics for that.

I will eat an occasional peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Something simple and easy.  I am waiting for my tomatoes to hurry up and grow (got a plant of cherry tomatoes so I can add them to my salads.).  If we go out to Applebees, I get the steak dinner that is under 550 calories (and it does fill you up).  I love the Special K with chocolate in it (one bowl satisfies me.).  I have been begging Bo to make up some salmon patties.  I usually have either a bowl of cereal, English muffin with cream cheese or cheesy toast (I cannot stand low fat cheeses) when I want to eat for breakfast.

I love trail mix and keep a bag next to me on the computer desk.  The sodium is not too bad.  I just pop a couple of handfuls and that keep the hunger away.

Got to excuse me...Little Bit is staring at me, licking her chops.  I think I am next on the menu...

IF you don't make the crystal light in full force but only use it to flavor water most trainers and weight loss coaches advocate using that method to ween yourself into drinking pure water, if you can't go cold turkey. The flavoring is pretty much for every 32 oz of water you use 1/2 a packet which the directions say is for 16 oz. However, once you are drinking water this way pretty steadily and such, you should start weening yourself to pure water, in fact, i have found that once i am fully on this type of flavored water, i start craving pure water.

Shaharthorne, i can see from what you are just mentioning why you aren't losing weight and what are your portion sizes like? Mac n cheese unless you are having a VERY small portion like 1/2 of a cup, and only occassionally, no matter what type of cheese is not a food that will help you lose weight, neither is mexican food (actually mexican as a whole concept is one of the worst types of food unless you seriously order it with NOTHING on basics like meat and veggies.

Check your yorgurt for sugar content. Also, if you want something sweet that is frozen, take some frozen fruit (look for the no sugar added kind) and make a sorbet or go for the sugar free types. Frozen yorgurt many times is not any better than ice cream. As you are starting to realize you have to read labels.

I am with Linnea on this -- check the rub it probably has salt AND sugar in it.

The fish is excellent, the fries eh to me no so much even if they are baked. Try next time when you cook your fish, take some of your favorite veggies (low starchy ones - meaning not a lot of carrots, or potatoes or corn) and cut them into bite size pieces, i like squash, zucchini, onions (i dont eat these just want to flavor), eggplant, a little lemon and i like Italian seasonings and put it in some tin foil and make it liek a pocket that its all wrapped up throw it in the oven to cook or try some french or green beans with a little lemon a couple sprays of olive oil and throw some garlic in or on it and cook the same way).

What are your portion sizes like?

That is great news about your blood sugar, one less thing to worry about, however, do watch out for sugar contents in food, and i am talking about the added sugars. With hypothyriodism it will be hard enough to lose weight, so you will probably need to be very strict with yourself once you find what works. The less you have of sugar the better. It sounds like you are getting hit on all sides, the antibiotics may be effecting your system also.

Hang in there but seriously, what you have listed here doesn't seem to be conducive for anyone who wants to lose weight at a steady rate. Now i am more of a focused eating than simply making smaller portions so i probably wouldn't be helpful if that is what you are choosing to do. But i have the south beach book also, if you want me to dig it out and read it to help, i would be willing. I am more of an atkinzeer simply because i like how its set up, but i am not adverse to looking into south beach with you.

When I do the chicken, I get one side of breast.  I used to love thigh meat but I have been eating the breast meat for a year now.

I love rice and steamed vegetables but we are cooking for 2 here (mom and I).  She does not like zukes while I do.  We make a large meal on Sundays to satisfy the entire family (brother and his wife and kids) comes over.  Usually we have leftovers and we will munch on it.  We also eat baked potatoes (in the microwave) and use light sour cream and shredded cheese.  I am trying to get mom away from pork roast (we cook it in the slow cooker for pulled pork).  I got a recipe for beef tips for the slow cooker.  I get most of the red meat in the discount section (freeze right away).  I have been eating bananas for the potassium since I am on the water pill (last time I took the water pill, I fainted in front of some J.W....LOL!

I am not drinking beer, but I will once in a while have a wine cooler.  I just hate wine because they are too sharp for my taste.

Bo just got home and is wanting to make some tosados.   I have to find the refried beans...and the flour tortillas (corn tortillas make me sick).

There is some research about aspartame that leads me to believe one should severely limit its intake.  Some studies link it to obesity.  Some link it to depression.  It's the same artificial sweetener that is found in most diet sodas.  I had a friend who drank large quantities of diet sodas.  He decided to stop drinking them & lost 50 lbs just from that change in his diet.

Frankly I enjoy them way too much myself.  I have found that flavored seltzer is nearly as enjoyable to me.  There is also a product very much like crystal lite that is sweetened with Splenda, which I have not heard terrible things about.  I wish I could remember the name of it.  I'm sure I'll think of it at 3am, sit straight up in bed, scream it out & call you.  Mmmmk??
