chuckles at RS, doesn't it just suck when life flips things around on you? You know, the concept of destiny could have brought you to this because maybe you have become stagnant in your torturing thingy you do -- when you are being sadistic -- and its drawing you NOW at this point in your life to this path so you will know from experience what REALLY hurts and new ways of torturing and you will have first hand experience so that you can take that knowledge and make it your own.

See how useful this thread is?

The best exercise motivation is seeing and feeling the results. Simply getting active will help the average person look and feel better, but in order to continue losing weight in the long haul you need to challenge your body with the most effective workouts. Some ways to avoid hitting a plateau in your walking program include picking up the pace, going a new distance, and integrating strength moves to build muscle, maximize your metabolism, and burn more fat. Here are the six crucial routines every walker needs to guarantee lasting weight loss.

1. Interval walks
This type of routine involves alternating fast and moderate to easy bouts of walking, so you might walk for 2 minutes at a very brisk pace and then recover at a slower pace for 1 minute. (If you graphed your speed, it would look like a series of peaks and valleys). This type of pattern helps rev fat loss—you'll turn up your calorie burn by as much as 100 percent during your workout and afterward. It's best to vary the length of these workouts as well as the intervals themselves to keep your body challenged.

Walk off more weight with this workout from fitness guru Chris Freytag.

2. Toning walks
Using an exercise band while walking will help firm your upper body and boost your calorie burn. Building muscle is the best way to stoke your metabolism long-term. When Prevention tested exercise bands in a head-to-head competition with dumbbells and other popular strengthening workouts, we found that the bands delivered faster firming. Our band-users slimmed down and toned common trouble spots such as the belly, thighs, and butt by 30 percent more than women who did other types of strength training. Try carrying a light to medium resistance band while you walk and stretching the band overhead and in front of your body for 45- to 60-second intervals.

3. Long walks
Endurance training (about an hour at a moderate intensity) has been shown to keep your calorie burn revved for up to 7½ hours post-exercise. Long walks will help maximize results because there is a dose response to exercise; that is, the more you do, the greater the benefits you'll receive. These will likely be the slowest walks you do in the program.

4. Recovery walks
Active recovery is important in any fitness program. During a recovery walk, you should walk as if you're in a bit of a hurry, so that you're slightly breathless, for about 20 minutes. While they don't blast fat like intervals, these tried-and-true calorie-burners have an important place when you're trying to walk off pounds. They're the perfect workout in between vigorous interval days to keep up your calorie burn without risking an injury.

5. Speed walks
During these shorter workouts, you'll maintain a high intensity for the entire session, striding as if you're late for an important appointment, so you're only able to speak in very brief phrases. This type of training has been shown to specifically attack belly fat better than longer, lower- intensity exercise.

Avoid sprains and injuries with these yoga stretches designed for walkers.

6. Strength training
Adding strength training to cardio workouts improves results: It boosts metabolism, increases weight loss, and can even help you eat less. In addition to the toning walks that target your upper body, you should aim to do lower body, core, and total body strength routines 2 to 3 days a week after your regular walks.

KneelforAnne -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (5/5/2010 6:13:27 PM)

It's been a while since I've posted, but things are going ok.

I had to take 2 weeks off from my workout due to work conflicts, but I balanced my intake accordingly and haven't gained anything noticeable (yet?)  I did note a lack of bend-ability in yoga this week and I really, really want to get back into that.  I think I'm going to add another weekly yoga class in, if I can find one that fits with my schedule.  Even if it's just stretching, and not the "hot" yoga that I go to... it would still be beneficial and something to do other than sit on the couch, right?

I DID go out and buy new clothes, because all my old ones felt so frumpy and big.  Took most of the old ones to a consignment shop and Goodwill, so hopefully someone can use them!

I'm getting compliments almost everyday now, and it's both good and bad.  I like that I'm getting noticed, but it also makes me uncomfortable.  Hopefully I'll find some balance there.

Tip 1 :  Make your own salad dressing!  I make mine with Good Seasonings Garlic and Herb dressing mix-- but I use balsamic vinegar rather than regular and I only use about a tablespoon of oil, the rest vinegar and water.  It's way less fat and calories, but it still tastes super good.

Tip 2: My new favorite breakfast is a frozen flax seed waffle, toasted, with natural peanut butter spread on it.  Really fast and easy, and it can go with you.  I often find myself eating it in the car on the way to work!  Glass of ff milk and a banana and I'm good to go until lunch.

Tip 3: Add beans to it!  If you can, add a can of rinsed beans to your dish.  It adds so much fiber and protein!  I recently made black bean hummus and spread it on a soft corn tortilla, added a salad and had a great, easy dinner.  Also -- for those of you that care about this-- eliminating meat from your diet just one day a week drastically reduces your carbon footprint!  Substitute beans!

Hope it's going well for everyone!

Thanks to Angel & Anne for their terrific posts!

I must admit to only walk/running 1.1 miles last night. My left side  (Tensor Fascae Latae) muscle & right glute were really hurting so I was limping alot & decided to go home & STRETCH only. I rec'd a "Foam Roller" last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lLw81kGeXg so I used that too. I LOVED using it on my quads!

I lifted my 125+ lbs several times this morning.  My tummy feels flatter.  But there's this odd thing happening to it.  I never had stretch marks from my pregnancies, but I guess I got lots bigger being fat, because now I have this wrinkly tummy.  And there's this like dividing line down the middle where it kinda goes in.  It's most decidedly wierd.  Somebody remind me again that it's a good thing to be losing weight, wouldja????  Cause it shore ain't purty.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (5/6/2010 11:08:39 AM)

When I first came to work here in January, I could barely huff & puff it up the stairs.  Today I noticed that I have been trotting up & down the stairs.  Multiple times.  I loves progress!!!!!

Yes, I know my walking is working as I took my grandsons to Disney World last week, and I was pulling them rather than the reverse. Does that mean that I have to stop hating it every time that I go, especially on hot humid days like today?

Did you ride "The Incredible Hulk" roller coaster?
What about the "Spiderman"? (not pseudonyms for the freaky men on this site)

-sighs- i have to figure out a back up plan, NM didn't sleep well so he didn't want to go to the gym this morning which means I couldn't go either. (since i currenctly can't drive)

Go out walking, Nika. It's great cardio exercise. You don't need a gym to lose weight.

VP I do walk every day, my dog is good for that. Lol We walk at least 2 miles a day.

ShaharThorne -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (5/7/2010 6:03:57 PM)

I am losing the weight now...YAY!

I just weighed myself and it is down around 275.

I am so glad we dropped the thyroid medicine. There is still swelling but I can handle it now.

I need to go to Lane Bryant and measured for new bras and get more sexy underwear. I cannot fit to a 14/16 but Lizard sure can...

Maybe she can handle the boy shorts that I got last time.

Fortunately for me, they are too short yet for either of those, but we did hit 3 parks in one day.

Shahar that is GREAT news, congrats! Keep up the great work.

The doctor is also after my baby brother. He had to do a stress tast and his heart rate was over 180. His side of the family walks a mile every day (as long if it is not raining, hailing, or tornado) at the school where my nephew goes to.

VirginPotty -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (5/8/2010 11:05:47 AM)

I power walked 6 miles last night & this AM I jogged/walked a 5k race
as an EMS member with the crowd.
I feel GREAT!

VP, you should be really proud of yourself with your focus and determination to achieve this goal of yours. Keep up the great work, you are doing awesome.

Yesterday afternoon our crew was doing our
Safety in the Neiborhood event which involved alot of
walking up STEEP hills. My legs are feeling it today so i skipped
my run this AM to prevent injury. I'll be walking later today at
Six Flags (all day) & will do some weights when I get home.
Right now I'm enjoying my 2nd cup of coffee & watching Twister.
