He could have got his gun...called the police... moved near the door...then in a loud voice say the Police are on the way get out... He would have run for their door to get away... he still would not have known the exact location of Orion and if he tried to use his gun he would still be at a disadvantage.

Common sense says he would run...you asked for a good alternative this is it...but of course not good enough for you I'm sure because you can never be wrong.

Hang on a sec. This is the guy who with a drawn .40 S&W pointing at him, refused to raise his hands when ordered to and then went for the .380 in his pocket rather than surrender? You're expecting him to use common sense and run because someone said in a loud voice "the police are on the way"? You honestly think he'd run when threatened with the possibility the police might arrive - despite the fact that with a gun pointed at his head he chose to go for his own gun?

I honestly have no idea what this guy might have done if told the police were called - his actions don't seem particualrly rational and since it appears he broke into the wrong house he's probably not the brightest bulb in the Christmas tree - but I wouldn't bet anyone's life that he'd act rationally or sanely under any circumstances.

lets agree to revisit the subject the next time some kid takes the family weapon to school and starts shooting up his classroom.

Good idea. And while we're at it, the next time some drunk wipes out a family of four, which is likely to be a lot sooner, we can argue for prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcohol too. In fact, why wait for a drunk to do it? Cars are more dangerous than guns, even without drunks driving them. People who care about human life really need to get behind us on this. We're murdering children on our roads!!

And then, let's see, theres......

K.

The just for shits and grins fun lets look up the statistics on accidental fatal shootings of children with their fathers’ right to own unnecessary handgun firearms.

Go ahead. I'd certainly be interested in seeing it. Definitely more topical than a lot of the other offerings here thus far.

No Loki,thats your interpetation of what a school shooting "says"...In some quarters a school shooting speaks to the ready availability of firearms in our society...the fact that you and those who think like you would choose to ignore that part of it says more about head in the sand syndrome ...but it is what I have come to expect from the gun crowd.
See you in a couple of weeks.....and oh yeah....thats a when....not an if!!!!!

Yeah, in the incorrect quarters it speaks to the availability of guns. But thanks for proving my point on the need for education.

You see, someone who will shoot up a school will do other things, as well. The columbine kids brought homemade bombs too, ones that can be made easily with innocent, store-bought items.

So let's talk about availability in the school scenario for a moment. The law-abiding ones who obey the sign on the school door are nothing but targets to someone willing to break the law.

Now, were they able to have their own guns for defense, perhaps they could stop the shooter.

But as I said first, it *does* speak more about parenting because for a kid to reach the point where a school shooting is a good idea, the ball was dropped long before he gets a hold of the gun.

Laymedown60 -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 8:35:14 PM)

You are not paying attention...he would do this before confronting him...remember he stalked him down and know his location before the perk did.

Ugh. I loath the things - which is why I tossed them into the list (I've long been of the opinion that if you are going to fantasize, you might as well go for it). But I don't think you have to worry, I doubt either human stupidity or olives will disappear from the earth any time soon.

You do have a point, though. Ban olives, and I might just be willing to give up my AR-15. That would definitely be a fair trade.

But that would only be relevant if we split the data into two groups: those where responsible ownership was practiced and those where it was not.

Perk? Is it possible you mean "perp," as in perpetrator?

Also, he did not "stalk" anyone. He investigated a noise and found an intruder. Big difference.

Maybe I misunderstood you - I believe what you said was that basically after seeing this guy, Orion should have gone back to his bedroom and called the police and then shouted out to the intruder that he'd called the police and that they're on their way.

Your thesis is that then the intruder would have used common sense and fled.

I'm saying that since this guy was crazy enough to attempt to pull a gun out of his pocket when there was a handgun pointed at his head that it's unlikely that he used any "common sense" to make his decisions. After being threatened with the police - there's no way to know what he would have done. He might have fled. He might have gone on a kill crazy rampage. He might have taken a hostage.

You're trusting this criminal to behave rationally when we already have seen that with his life on the line he acted irrationally.

Not to mention the fact that due to his actions, an armed and dangerous person wasn't on the loose in the area. So Orion might have saved someone else's life in the process of defending what is his. I say Bravo! [sm=applause.gif][sm=applause.gif][sm=applause.gif]
As for the intruder...Not a bit of sympathy from me. He got what he deserved.

Congratulations Kirata you have "disarmed" me with your inteligence and reasoning...Bravo.

Thank you. Because by your characterization of my logic, it is just as asinine to do nothing about alcohol and cars. Or does your devotion to human life stop when it comes to your booze and your wheels?

When are you going to get on board with me here? This society needs to stop the flow of liquor down the throats of drunks and allowing everyone over the age of 16 to drive a rolling murder weapon!!

Laymedown60 -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 8:47:16 PM)

Will according to the CDC in the year 2000 only 409 kids between 1 and 14 were killed by accidental discharge of firearms heh what’s a little number like 409, just a drop in the bucket, excess population anyway, I mean are there no County Hospitals, are there no wooden coffins in the morgue? I mean we do pay taxes for such things.

I would ask you the same question, however with your level of reading comprehension, and the fact that you don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," you would be more of a candidate for repeating the third grade than you would be for mensa.

I would also like assurance that all of the following will be removed:

Kinves
Blunt objects
Molotove cocktails
Really strong guys with bulging muscles
Human agression
Human hatred
Human stupidity
Olives

If society can accomplish all that then I will gladly beat my twelve guage into a plow shoare.

You forgot rattlesnakes.  I have used my firearm exactly as the manufacturer intended when a mojave green decided to take an attitude with me on my own front porch.  As long as we have rattlesnakes, my 12 guage stays where it is.

gehennasfury -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 8:53:02 PM)

Yes. I said "when, not if." It's been proven that 90% of people are the victim of a crime of some sort during his or her lifetime. Just laying the facts out there mike.

Laymedown60 -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 9:00:17 PM)

I think you are... I said in my post he should have called the police the first thing before he took his gun and went looking for the perk...

Now don't make the mistake of many and think I am criticizing... Panda asked for an alternative that would have worked. I gave him one.

I did fine in the third grade Loki....."your" concern over my education is touching.
My reading comprehension is fine.....though at this point I am questioning my sanity for getting involved with this argument.

I don't want to get into the sort of tactical analysis I criticized a couple of pages ago, but I think that calling the police, and then going and telling the intruder that you've called the police - alerting him to your presence and giving him the opportunity to act as he sees fit - is less likely to result in a good outcome given what we now know about the intruder's thought processes.
