I think you are... I said in my post he should have called the police the first thing before he took his gun and went looking for the perk...

Now don't make the mistake of many and think I am criticizing... Panda asked for an alternative that would have worked. I gave him one.

Butch

Did it work here? And if not, on what basis do you categorically assert that it definitely would have worked in Orion's basement?

Yes. I said "when, not if." It's been proven that 90% of people are the victim of a crime of some sort during his or her lifetime. Just laying the facts out there mike.
No gehennas...what you said was something about when,NOT IF their home was invaded by thugs....or some such scenario.
Now its 90% are the victim of a crime of some sort......which is it...thugs invading houses.....or my car being keyed?

Wow. What a fascinating thread this has become – so many different angles. I haven’t read all the responses (I don’t need the eye strain) and I don’t want to be up typing ‘til three in the morning (gotta go to work, after all) but there are two things I do want to say:

First, there is absolutely no evidence to support the notion that Orion is hoaxing us. From what I know about the guy (from reading his posts), there is no reason to doubt his honesty and therefore he should be given the benefit of the doubt.

Second, to all those who are second guessing Orion’s actions bear (PUN!) in mind that Orion was in a position in which he could not afford to give the intruder the benefit of the doubt – there was too much (his family!) at stake. Orion is not psychic and does not have x-ray vision. He cannot read minds. He had no way of knowing if the intruder was armed. He had no way of knowing if the intruder was violent, mentally ill, tripping out on drugs or all three. Most importantly we have the benefit of taking our time to think the situation over. Orion did not. He had to think fast – knowing that time may well be short.

This is just one more reason why I continue to firmly believe that it is easy to have high moral principles so long as the consequences do not affect us.

What exactly do we now know about the alleged intruder's thought processes that we didn't know when the thread began?

I did fine in the third grade Loki....."your" concern over my education is touching.
My reading comprehension is fine.....though at this point I am questioning my sanity for getting involved with this argument.

Well look at that. You used "your" correctly this time. You get a gold star. Keep at it and grade 4 will be a snap.

You do have a point, though. Ban olives, and I might just be willing to give up my AR-15. That would definitely be a fair trade.

Oh just think of it - no olives and no guns. What a beautiful world this would be.

Laymedown60 -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 9:16:10 PM)

I respect your thoughts...but I know crooks...they are there to take...this was not a house invasion... if they are discovered and they have a way out they run. Why stay and take a chance of getting shot.

My Police Department says

“Stay in the room you're in and lock and barricade the door. Immediately call the police to get help on the way. Shout to the intruder that the police have been called and are en route. “

I think I'll follow their advice first...but i will have a shotgun back up

Well I try Loki...its important to get these things right.....even if one goes around sprouting utter idiotic bullshit.....one wants to do it correctly.I applaud "your" efforts in this area.

You forgot rattlesnakes. I have used my firearm exactly as the manufacturer intended when a mojave green decided to take an attitude with me on my own front porch. As long as we have rattlesnakes, my 12 guage stays where it is.

Ya know, you're right. That's a whole category I didn't think of. We have to get rid of all the dangerous animals too - lions, tigers and bears, oh my!

Laymedown60 -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 9:17:52 PM)

I can say according to how he described the lay out it would have worked.

But his way worked for sure...just a little blood though.

Once again, do you mean "perp," as in perpetrator?

stricter gun laws leads (on a direct proportional basis) to less gun violence...PERIOD. Less guns = less people shot.

...yup....but lots more stabbed, suffocated, frozen, axed, mauled by dogs & beaten to death with bare hands & iron skillets. Do you honestly believe that the guns commit the crimes, NOT the people?? Or are you saying those people wouldn't commit those crimes if they didn't have a gun?? Crimes that have been around since....ohhhh....God was leaving Moses notes in STONE??

Yeahhhhh....riiiiiiiiiiiiight....before firearms, life was perfect & people were always nice.

Maybe I'm just starting to get tired (I don't want to come across as a huffy puffy) but nitpicking common grammer/punctuation/spelling mistakes - that everybody makes from time to time - does nothing to advance or contradict any argument.

slvemike4u -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 9:22:05 PM)

Loki do you think he meant "perk".....try to pay more attention to content...and don't sweat the typos so much.
Perhaps if you wern't so hung up on the little details you wouldn't be so confused?

Will according to the CDC in the year 2000 only 409 kids between 1 and 14 were killed by accidental discharge of firearms heh what’s a little number like 409, just a drop in the bucket, excess population anyway, I mean are there no County Hospitals, are there no wooden coffins in the morgue? I mean we do pay taxes for such things.

Laymendown

I don't have the time tonight to do a thorough analysis of this but as I recall, accidental fatalities of children via firearms is an extremely small number.

A quick search provided me this, which shows that in 2003 there were 81,216,385 children between the ages of 0 and 19 in the United States. There were 53,539 deaths among this group and of those there were 151 due to accidental firearm discharge. Obviously the death of a child is a terrible thing but 151 out of ~54,000 deaths is something like 2 one thousandths of 1% (check my math here, it's late).

If your primary concern is protecting children, I'd have to agree with the other posters that there are more serious causes to go after before firearms become a serious target for attention. If your major concern is the evil of guns, then I guess the rest of it doesn't matter.

Oh don't be too hard on yourself. I mean what you have been spreading is idiotic. And it certainly qualifies as bullshit. But you don't need to call it that. It can be our little secret.
