Well shit, I didn't know that.

It's only 151 deaths of children due to accidental firearm discharge.

Practically a drop in the bucket.

No worries.

Unless it is your child.

And that's why it is each parent's responsibility to teach firearm safety to any children they may have.

Or....and this is just me spit balling here...each parent could maintain a gun free enviorment for their children.

Just playing devils advocate here...but we know nothing of what happened here ,other than what Orion has told us...and yet it is all being discussed as if this version is written in stone.

Just like every other thread here, all we have to go on is what the OP has said.

Now that is just flat out bullshit....posters and their posts are rarely taken at face value around here.

A gun is a far more more deadly and efficient killing machine than any of the examples you mentioned.

Sorry, you're wrong. It's the human that is the 'efficient killing machine'.

If his efficiency is not satisfactory to him he will damn well find ways to improve it. But regardless of his creative means of improving his efficiency, it's the human who does the killing. It's the human who has been doing the killing since the first authority attempted to make a 'law' against it....carved in stone with ten others....wayyyyyyyyyyyyy before there were any guns.

~K

True.  But doesn't a gun make it far easier and far more deadly?

When the recent killing of four armed police officers occurred would you really argue that could have happened without a gun?

That the murderer would have been able to kill them with a knife or some other means?

Not once in all of the posts has anybody noted that they have heard only one side of the story. Under the andrenaline rush of "fight or flight" things oft times are interpreted in different ways, that is why law enforcement interviews as many witnesses as possible. For all we know the OP's recollections are biased (unintentionally and unconsciously) to support his actions.

Shit I thought I brought up the "only one side " thing a couple of posts ago...oh well.

I would argue that most of us do take posts at face value - it is just that what constitutes "face value" depends upon our own interpetation which in turn arises from our own biases, beliefs, etc.

Unfortunately, you have a whole lot of people who will not do that.

You only have to search through the gun threads here to witness the irresponsible attitude many have toward owning a gun.

Sure. And then when faced with a situation like Orion was, they can watch their kids die.

You look after yours your way (which is to say cowardly and unsuccessfully), and I'll look after mine my way.

I agree with you that losing a child is a tragedy beyond words. I in no way attempted to trivialize child fatalities. I find your sarcasm somewhat disingenuous.

Are you suggesting that the primary focus of reducing child fatalities should be accidental firearm discharge and that the most time, effort and attention should be spent on attempting to save the 2-3 one thousandth's of 1% of children who will likely die this year due to this rather than focusing on the much greater causes of child fatality such as motor-vehicle accidents, disease, drowning, poisoning or even firearm-related homicides (which are mostly due to gang-related activities)?

Or are you attempting to use a particularly heart-rending situation as an emotional appeal to ignore the statistics on the matter in an attempt to forward a point of your own?

No.

What I'm attempting to point out is how someone with an agenda can rationalize anything in pursuit of that agenda.

Even the death of a child.

While I am all for gun ownership and 2nd Amendment rights, I don't think your characterization is fair. Many people view the risk of having a firearm in their home as greater than the risk of threat or intrusion. That's not an insane or irrational position and, as a parent, if someone makes the choice to not have firearms in their home out of concern for their children - I wouldn't believe them cowards or failures as parents. Many families never have their home bulglarized or need a firearm to defend themselves.

Where I draw the line is them compelling everyone else to adopt their methods and their risk assessments. If you feel that there is a greater risk is from external threats and so choose to own firearms - that's your right. Many families have firearms in the house and never have a single accident or problem.

Loki, I agree with your choice - but I respect the right of someone else to raise their children differently.

How about enumerating what you consider those irresponsible attitudes to be, so people can judge for themselves whether or not they agree with you.

Lockit -> RE: Defended my home (12/8/2009 10:44:37 PM)

There are poor parents in all sorts of ways. How many do not provide safety from a pool and how many children die each year in a pool? Because some parents are neglectful, doesn't mean that all parents should be subject to controls and make it so no pools are allowed, when there are responsible parents . Nor should we consider correcting some wrongs of some parents by making all parents subject to gun control because of parental neglect.

More charges are being made against parents who do not protect their children and put guns in a place that the children cannot have access to, when something happens. I think that is enough. Punish those who fail... not all those who do not fail or fail yet. Because all who haven't had a problem won't be responsible too... but all the same... punish those who fail and more will comply with better handling of guns around children, the mentally ill, etc.

I love children and would protect them in any way I could, but... some things should be left to parents and not controlled by government because of the lacks in others.

Mind giving us a few examples of what you consider those to be, aside from taking it out of its case?

K.

One example comes to mind immediately.

We had a gun thread a few months ago where someone said they kept a loaded gun on their nightstand every night.

She went on to elaborate how she instructed her two toddlers, if I remember correctly, 3 and 5 years old, never to touch it.

Are you going to argue that this was responsible?

And while I am a little lazy right now I'll be happy to do the research and pull up her statements if you don't believe me.

Jeeez. Nope. You can count me in on that one.
